“Way better once you get inside (from the rain)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

After deciding to not have the Prix Fixe at the Big Sur Bakery, we decided to go here. Initially, from the outside, it looked sad (the culprit is the overlit front tables abutting the outside - made it seem like a terrible diner) and then walking in, had a hiccup because the host stand is also the after hours (7pmish) hotel front desk. Standing there waiting for the guest in front of us to check in, I was staring at the 400 watt per bulb lit front section and praying we were not asked to sit there because beyond it lie a really charming restaurant and locals-packed bar for sunday football. Excellent appetizers and hearty entrees were half the price of Nepenthe and 4 times better (sorry Nepenthe, you just have some problems). Dessert was not great; the staff was efficient but not great either (it seems the super great ones probably work at the resorts of Post Ranch or Ventana because of the better tips) which isn't to say this place isn't great. I actually am going there for breakfast in the morning and cant wait to get past the problems and enjoy my meal.

“A pleasant stopover on Highway 1”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

This was a great place to stopover on Highway 1 after a long trek in Point Lobos state reserve. We only had snacks from the bar-sweet potato fries and two home-brewed Root beers. The fries were fantastic, crispy and not too oily with great seasoning and the root beer had a great sharp taste. The snacks were enjoyed on the wicker chairs on the Big Sur River. It was a bit touristy, but a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy an affordable and tasty snack before hitting the road again.

“Meat and seafood overcooked”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

the service was accomodating and freindly - the food didn't live up to the hype. Chewy prawns and steak were dissaponting at best.

“Excellent lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

We stopped here by recommendation from our hotel in Monterey. We had a very relaxing meal and were entertained by a Stellar Jay in a small pool nearby. The garlic prawns were excellent and a perfect light meal. I had an awesome BLT! We sat next to an enormous California redwood! Very relaxing!

“Pleasant surprise in the wilderness of Big Sur”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Came here on reccomendation from front desk at glen oaks motel ( which is also v nice but thats another story) Very pleasantly surprised to see such ambience and food in this wilderness an better then some highly publicized restaurants in big cities. Thery were able to make a lot of vegetarian options from the menu and the food was nice as well as the atmosphere.
