We were looking for a tourist-free, uncommercialized holiday and Rancho Sak Ol and the town of Puerto Morelos is where we found it. Instead of paying for a pricey shuttle we took the ADO bus from the airport to the highway junction of Puerto Morelos for 40 pesos each. From there we got a taxi---negotiated 40 pesos for the trip to the Rancho (he tried to get 60 pesos but no way jose!). We were greeted by Luna the dog, our resident pet for the week. She likes to bark at imaginary predators. We booked the Rancho via email and it was a tad frustrating as many emails got lost along the way to Mexico but it all worked out in the end. Our room was lovely, clean and had a good view of the beach. If you've never heard your partner pee, this is your chance as the bathroom has old-style saloon swing doors. Thank goodness for the hammocks on the deck and the ever blowing breezes. The suspended beds were a tad nauseating but we stabilized it with the chairs in the room. There is a safe in the room but bring an extra $50 USD as deposit for the key. Breakfast was great---self-serve, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, milk, toast, eggs and squeeze-yourself orange juice all under the watchful eye of the owner and the cleaners. So if you're planning to take a banana for later, think again! Fridges are available for guests to store groceries but no freezer. The kitchen and all the equipment (and they've thought of everything!!) is available to use to make your meals. Often we had it all to ourselves. Lots of free, bottled water provided. You can also ask to borrow the laptop which has internet access. We borrowed the bikes and snorkles, no problem. The main grocery store in town had everything we needed and with one vegetarian among us, we did fine! We rented a car in town for $50 per day and that was an easy process. There is a beach out front of the Rancho but we found the beach in town was much nicer for swimming as it was rock-free and sandy. We spent alot of time at the beach and February must have been sand-flea breeding month as we were covered by the end of the week. Antihistamines anyone???
All in we had a very relaxing stay and would come again in a heart beat.
