“Lovely Winter Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2011

We just came back from our first all inclusive holiday. Was a great experience.
Our trip was made through West Jet with Best Day Travel handling the transfers from airport to resort. We booked together as a group of 10 adults.
We were late checking in so they ran out of regular lux. suites so we got a free upgrade to a lux. suite with platinum club level.(Difference was slippers, housecoats, umbrella , microwave in room). Also ocean view from balcony also overlooking adult jacuzzi. Upgrade provided lots of good natured bugging from rest of our group especially when we came out with our umbrella when it rained the first morning. Room kept very clean. Turn down service in eve; if we showered after first cleaning they cleaned up again. Room restocked well every day. No shortage of towels or facecloths. Room service 24 hrs. Excellent choices on their room menu.
Beach had lots of chairs. Free kayaking, boogie boards, volley ball area. Once in the ocean about waist deep, VERY VERY ROCKY. Please bring water socks to protect feet. This is the only complaint of the whole resort I have. Bar service on each end of beach.
Pool area was huge with a jumping cliff and a slide. Giant chess game, ping pong tables and basketball hoop along the pool also. Have a tennis court but didn't see it.
Lobby bar had entertainment every eve. Also every eve. from 9-10 there was entertainment by the pool ,at the convention center or in the lobby. There was disco every night at the marina at 11. By then we were usually in our rooms. Pool shut down at dark; then guests migrated over to the adult jacuzziwhich usually quieted down by 8.
As food is a personal preference its hard to rate it. 5 of our group had a harder time finding something to eat than the other 5 of us. If all fails room service menu had some basic options. We found the Arrecife restaurant much quieter for bfst; not many came there. The Alhambra had buffets for all 3 meals. There was a different food theme for each supper of the week. The Arrecife had a buffet for lunch also. Got very busy because everyone was outside by then. The Arrecife turned into a Mexiacan alacart for supper. We booked there one supper but only 5 of us ordered, the rest went to their rooms for room service. All the meals we ordered were exc. Booked a supper at La Marina rest alacart with the same 5 people and we all had an exc. meal there also. Booked a supper at the Alcazar rest. for alacart but no one liked the menu so we went to the Alhambra instead. Alchol was of high calber; beer was Corona and a couple others.
For shopping they have a gift shop. Also some vendors were along polside but they never bothered you. We bought a lovely painting done by a guy with his finger nail; lovely piece of art. Many in our group also bought from him. One eve they brought in vendors into the courtyard by the pool; they were more high pressured sellers like you see in town.
The resort was very clean Workers were always scurrying around doing something. they raked sea weed off the beach every morning
Saw 3 weddings so resort must do a good job in that dept.
For checking out we had late flight out so they kept our luggage in a secure place till we left.
In conclusion this was a great holiday. Can't single out a specific worker beacuse THEY WERE ALL GREAT. Eveyone from front desk to maids to rest. workers to groudskeepers, etc. etc. they always had a smile on their face and did their upmost to keep us happy. We tipped quite often but I really don't think it would have made a difference in the service we received. Enjoyed it so much we are looking forward to coming back in 2 years.
P.S. Time share people never approached us once

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2011

This is the 4th resort we have been to. We travel with friends and family who wish for immaculate service , great food , clean rooms along with a nice relaxing beach. I found it all here and will come back to the El Cid again. And for less than $1200 , I still can't believe it. Here is a detailed report and a few tips.

Time of Year
Twice we went in December and January. If you are to go , last part of January , early February is better weather. We had 6.5 days out of 7 of 80 - 85 degrees. The other half day was spent out of the wind catching what rays of sunshine we coud get.

Vacation Operator
Westjet - hands down. All 4 were thru Westjet , no complaints. Juan is the WJ dude at the El Cid. Any issues , he's your man.

Tour Companies
Buyer beware - they are all sharks but it's up to the person to investigate for themselves.
From my own experience , Bestday is not trustworthy. But remember you can barter with the Tour companies and cabbies to get a better price.
We were told to meet for a special Bestday meeting the next morning to recieve our vouchers for the transfer back as Bestday is Westjet's transfer company.
Altho they offer many valuable tips , of which Tripadvisor's clients would be aware of anyways , it turns into a salespitch for tours. You need not attend the whole meeting to get the voucher as it is paid for already.
Go online , check out prices then tell them what you are going to pay unless it's not what you are into. If they disagree, ensure you have a backup plan.
The cab prices are posted on a big sign in front of the El Cid lobby. Those prices are pretty much in line with most cabs. The Doorman will line up your cab. That is a positive thing.

Check-In / Check Out
Quick and easy. 6 out of the 10 of us ended up in the same villa. 2 were right next door while 2 were upgraded to the Platinum room. (Yep , they get an umbrella to use along with slippers , housecoats and sometimes night time entertainment in the hot tub !! ).
Our flight left at 5:30 PM and check out is 11 am. No problem as our bags were stored in a secure room. The bellboys went with us to pick up the bags with their carts. That is also how we got to our rooms when we checked in at 8:30PM.

Information/Concierge
Very friendly , approachable and professional. No question too stupid and this is where you book your a la cartes.

A La Cartes
Marina - If you like seafood - good place. We had shrimp and tuna .. all great.
Alcazar - Mediteranean - seafood. Didn't go as the menu that day was not appealling.
Areclife - Mexican - OK , but I'm not a big Mexican food fan.
I had no issue booking a la cartes.

Buffets
Areclife and Alhambra are the 2 buffets for breakfast and lunch. Both have the usual breakfast stuff with omelette bars , smoothies etc.
Grilled steaks at Areclife. Became my fav spot for lunch.
Alhambra is the only supper buffet. Different theme every night but always burgers , dogs , pizza , fries and pasta bar for the kids.
The food was always plentiful and never a long wait when they replenished. Very very tasty choices. Always main dishes of fish , pork , chicken and beef. Service was fast and friendly at the buffets. Plenty of salads , fruits , desserts and ice cream.
We felt we never had to worry about a la cartes as the food was great at the buffets. Best buffet of the 4 resorts I've been too.

Rooms

We had a Jr. suite. My brother was upgraded to Platinum.
Jr's had plenty of room , nice balcony and super clean. Maids came twice a day and the mini bar was always stocked. Platinum just had more stuff , microwave , stove etc.
A/C and fan kept the room cool.
Shower pressure was awesome and always hot water at all times of the day.
Bed was firm but not uncomfortable. 6 english channels on TV. 20 more spanish. Nice view from the terrace and the room service was unlimited , 24 hrs a day , but only what was on the takeout menu.
Nice clean fresh smell , in the room, even tho smoking is allowed. Not musky at all and no critters. We were on the 3rd floor . Elevator or stairway access to all floors.
A safe was provided , no charge. We left stuff laying around yet nothing grew legs.

Entertainment

The main lounge had the classical entertainment , soft music , horn players from 8-9 PM , then again from 10-11PM. At 11 there was a disco at the Marina ( not that we went). The Marina is far away from the rooms as it is not an issue for sleeping. The Resort is pretty quiet by 10pm.
At 9PM they have shows come in. We seen the Fire , Carribbean , Prehispanic and Circus shows. Each day a different show. All top notch. We got blocked out from the magic show but heard it was good. Go get a seat by 8:30 or it's standing room only.
Shows are either at the pool , convention center (plenty of seats) or Lounge. A MUST SEE !! Family entertainment.

Drinks
Corona was always available along with a few other brands. Top shelf hard liquor was served.Great slushy drinks. Servers came by regularly . If not , then we just got our own. Waiters at the pool and beach. Bars at the pool , hot tub and on the beach.

Beach and Pool

Nice sandy beach but you do need watershoes when the water is 3 ft as there are plenty of rocks. Water is weedy when it is wavy as the reef provides vegetation but not an issue as there were clear spots. Nice area for kids to wade and if you can swim and float , no biggy.
The pool was unheated but huge. Warm enough to go in tho. Entertainment staff keeps everyone busy. Plenty of loungechairs at both the pool and beach at all times of the day. Maybe not prime areas but chairs are there.
Kayaks are provided free of charge as well as soccer balls , volleyballs etc.
You get a towel card , friendly towel staff , no issues.

Wrapping it up.....
What a great resort. We've been to Gran Principe and Real Resorts , all 5 stars. We will come back to this place. My only complaints are Bestday (not associated with El Cid) and the bacon was overcooked...lol... maybe a good thing for my waistline.
The El Cid even has a kid's club , not that we used it tho as our kids are in their 20's.
I hear it's free and the kids all looked like they were really having a great time.
Perhaps 15% of the people there were kids , 10 yrs and younger. Never an issue as I hardly noticed them.
Family oriented resort , not for the partiers. Shopping at Playa Del Carmen , only 350 pesos away. Cancun about 300 pesos.
Resort is 20 minutes away from the airport. 30mins (or so) from Playa del carmen.
We tipped often but the staff never asked once. Seen a few iguanas and had the most relaxing fun times ever. TY El Cid for making our vacation the best ever.
Lobby and resteraunts are enclosed and A/C kept it nice. A nice break from the heat somedays.
I never was approached by timeshare people but I just would have said no , as I did in other resorts and they leave you alone. Once you take a free anything , then it's your funeral. But if you are seriously interested , go ahead.
If anyone has any questions , email me thru Tripadvisor. I hope I can make your vacation a nice one.

El Cid was a great experience for all members of our family. We had a great time in their pool, the beach, and their restaurants. The food was amazing, and beautifully presented. Every day we stayed there we had a new dish that was better than the previous one. I was thoroughly impressed.
The staff was unbelievably nice and helpful. Our room was cleaned twice a day and it was kept very neat and well stocked with all amenities.
On site they had Pronatours, who helped us secure our excursions to Tulum and Selvatica. Both of which were also fantastic.
You can purchase access to wireless internet for $15 a day or $60 for the week.
After reading some of the reviews about El Cid, I was nervous, but the hotel was absolutely wonderful. No complaints - I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

We just returned from a week at El Cid...and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The staff were friendly and responsive. After reading the reviews fro Trip Advisor, we upgraded to Platinum and had a great room overlooking the jacuzzi.

We found the food above average! Our favorite restaurant was the Le Marina. I would recommend some type of a coffee bar - otherwise, it was good.

Daniel, Laura and Salvatore were very helpful in Club Platinum.

The best chairs (for comfort) are the ones on the a deck by the jacuzzi. Grab one early!

We did not like the heavy sell at the beginning - but we declined interest and the rest of our stay we were not bothered.

We walked into town to take a snorkeling trip. The walk was not bad - we did the road on the way there and the beach on the way back.

The sand is nice - you need sandals or water shoes once you enter the water though. Lots of rock.

Overall, this was a very positive and enjoyable week! Thanks El Cid!

Before booking our trip to Mexico I read up on the reviews of the Marina El Cid and was a little leery because I was focusing on the negatives. Since the price was right, we decided to take our chances and try the El Cid. Upon our return, I feel compelled to write about the overall great stay we had at this resort.

First off, I have to say that at no time were we ever bothered by salespeople for time share. We were prepared to decline but didn't need to. There is not much to do in Puerto Morelos so we were glad that we had rented a car to see the sights in the south.

At the resort there was much to keep us and our children entertained. The pool was great and the kids loved the waterslide (a bit too fast for my liking) and cliff jumping. We played tennis, went kayaking, played beach soccer, volleyball and tried zumba. The entertainment staff were really enthusiastic and friendly. In fact, we were very impressed with the quality of service from the waiters, maids, kids club, bartenders, front desk and concierge. The staff did not seem to expect the small tips we gave, but we felt happy to do it because they all worked so hard to make our stay a memorable one. We also enjoyed a massage and the hydrotherapy at the spa and some time to relax in a hammock. Oh, and the kids really enjoyed the nighttime entertainment. Most of which was very family oriented.

The food at the buffet was very good with a wide variety to choose from. We enjoyed the fresh fruit smoothies in the morning and they serve decent coffee. Our favourite a la carte restaurant was the mexican one- thanks to all the waiters who helped us celebrate my son's birthday with a cake and his first shot of what he thought was "tequila". We were disappointed with our meal at the Marina restaurant. The Alcazar had a fantastic salad bar with antipasto and smoked salmon. The menu needs some work though as it tries a little too hard with its fusion offerings and many of the choices just did not work for us. Service was great at all restaurants and we never had to wait long for a drink. We were also very impressed with the cleanliness of the resort.

All in all, for the price we paid we felt we got good value for our money and the resort exceded our expectations.

We have just returned from our 2nd visit to Marina El Cid and once again they outdid themselves in service, friendliness and everything else that is part of a 5 star resort. The food continues to be wonderful and has everything to choose from and the cleanliness is exceptional. Ricardo and his staff are outstanding. Everyone of the staff who we enjoyed last year remembered us this year and it was like going home. Ricardo, sorry we didn't get to say a proper goodbye but we would have probably started crying. You are special and made sure our stay with you was exceptional. To our dear friend "Josh" at the Concierge desk you have become our special friend and to all the staff you made us feel part of the El Cid family. One way or the other we will be back to visit all of you and keep up the good work! It was very hard to come home to -35C temperatures in Winnipeg!!! Best Regards, Greg & Shelley

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2011

Finally getting around to writing this. We stayed at the Hotel Marina El Cid from December 27, 2010 to January 2, 2011. Could not have been more impressed. Some context for this review: We are amateurs at this. My wife and children (17 and 19) and I have been on one Caribbean cruise, on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas, and this was our first trip to Mexico or an all-inclusive. I booked this trip last March, and since then I have read virtually every Trip Advisor review (yes, I'm a little anal that way) on this site for the El Cid. My question for almost every bad reviewer is, "What was the source of your expectations or entitlement going in?".

More or less in order:

Check in: We came in at 5 on Monday afernoon. We were checked in within 5 minutes. We then had a 10 minute overview of the resort. This woman politely invited us to a champagne brunch the next morning for a more expansive overview ( I smelled timeshare at this point). I politely declined and that was the end of it. Zero pressure. As for others who have complained about gettng checked in: We did note on Saturday, late morning and early afternoon, some folks around the pool with carry on's and such. Okay; it's a busy time of the year, people are checking out, rooms need to be cleaned. I would ask you if the hotels you go to allow you to check in at 11 a.m. when they are busy? The only pressure came from Best Day, the airport transfer company I booked with. I had to go to the convention center at the resort to get my return voucher, then they tried to sell me some tours, then told me I had to come back a day later for my voucher after they had verified my flight, which wasn't for another 5 days. I had paid for the transfers 9 months previous. I did not expect them to be held hostage. Will not use Best Day again for anything.

Cleanliness: Nothing short of amazing. Even the pool-side bathrooms are clean, and continously being cleaned. I have never been to a hotel or resort that had cleaner public areas. Enough said.
Yes, the beach has some weeds, which, like the rest of the resort, is continously being cleaned. Look, there's a reef 1 mile off shore. That means living creatures that eat, sleep, etc . in the area. That means there's plant life. If it's too much for you, go to Mandalay Bay in Vegas.

Nightlife: None, and that is on purpose, not by accident. If you want to go clubbing in Cancun, stay in Cancun.

Food: This is where I really challenge the reviewers who complained, as to the source of their expectations? The buffet is better than the buffet on the cruise ship. The sit down restaurants are not as good as the formal dining room on the cruise ship. That pretty much covers it. Except to say that if your idea of authentic Mexican food is the fajitas at Chili's, then you should stay home, because that's TexMex. Most authentic Mexican (and Caribbean, and Latin American) food is lots of beans and rice and chicken, and not terribly spicy.

Petty theft: Non-existent. There are really no other resorts around, so there's zero "walk through" traffic. We didn't leave stacks of money laying on our chairs, but we left cameras, IPODS, room keys, sun glasses, etc. unattended on chairs for hours at a time. You can't do that in the States. We spoke to some fellow beach volleyball players who have been to El Cid multiple times and have the same impression.

Chairs: Way more chairs in "good" locations than on cruise ship. Look, the "chair game" is a fact of life; the El Cid did not invent it. But there are always chairs available on the beach or within 5 paces of the pool. They may not be the absolute premium locations, but there are always chairs.

I got sick the day we came home, BUT, it was a very nasty head cold, not Montzuma's Revenge. Why does everyone who get's a bad stomach when traveling assume it's food poisoning? I once got very sick, in the more conventional sense, when in Puerto Rico, and it occurred to me that it might be food poisoning. But when I got home, I promptly gave it to my son (exact same symptom pattern, duration, etc), which means it was a bug, but not food poisoning. Guess what: when you travel to parts of the world to which you are not acclimated, you will be exposed to various bugs with which your body is poorly equipped to deal. if you don't like that risk, go to Ft. Myers Beach and stay at the Radisson; that's where you belong.

Summary: Great time, great resort, great beach, great value. Would go back tomorrow.
