My family of 10 chose to stay at El Cid for the first time this year. My husband and I and our 2 daughters (9&4) were in a Junior Suite in building 14. We were on the first floor, so our view was of the "adults only" hot tub area . That wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Our room was cleaned and stocked everyday, but one. As soon as we called, someone came. My husband and I love a firm mattress, so we loved the bed. Murphy bed was perfect for our girls to share.
After getting settled in and having lunch at the buffet, we spoke with Alfredo about the activities and considered taking the VIP tour. Since this was mine and my husbands first vacation with our kids, we decided to pass on the tour. Nothing else was said to us about it.
The food was great! We tried all 3 restaurants, but still preferred the buffet. The staff at the buffet were super hard workers. I do wish there was a soda machine inside the buffet so that the staff didn't have to leave to go get soda. Over all, dining was a good experience!
We were there during Hurricane Barbra followed by a tropical storm. The weather didn't give us more than 2 sunny days, which we spent on the beach or at the pool. I recommend swimming shoes for the ocean!!!!!! Because you are right in front of the worlds 2nd largest coral reef, you should expect the ocean floor to be a little rocky. It was beautiful to see all the coral that has washed up. The seats were easy to find. Bar tenders on the beach were always around when I needed them. Haha!!!
The pool was great too. I couldn't get my nine year old off the cliff and water slide. My 4 year old tried the big slide a few times, but preferred the small slide or just floating around. The pool bar would have been more fun for us if we were there without kids, but my parents were able to enjoy it.
Now, to my favorite part of vacation, THE LOBBY BAR!!!! My sister was nice enough to keep my kids for 2 nights in order for my husband and I to have some adult time. On this, I'd like to say, if you have kids, do NOT take them into the bars after 9. It's rude to the adults trying to unwind and relax. It's also rude to the bar tenders who are working hard and don't need your bratty kids demanding virgin drinks every 10 minutes. I feel that there should be a resort policy prohibiting children from the bar area after 9. On a great note: WE HAD SOOOO MUCH FUN! Jerry and Cely were the BEST! Jerry kept us laughing and even sang with the nightly band. (The band is great. Selena has a beautiful voice) He became a part of our family and we just loved him!
Cely followed us outside each time we went to smoke. Always with a tray of tequila shots! Our second night at the bar, she served us all night.
I would say, crappy weather aside, this was the best vacation ever! The staff, mostly Alfredo, Jerry and Cely, would be the biggest reason for us to return. If you are thinking about El Cid, you won't be disappointed. Bring a gift from home to give to your favorite staff member. Trust me, you will have at least one. Big thanks to everyone who made it such a great time!!!!!
