We went to Excellence Riviera Cancun for the second half of our honeymoon. We spent 6 nights there after spending 5 nights at the Palladium resort.
We are 28 and 27 and very well traveled. We chose Excellence as the “splurge” half of our honeymoon mostly because they didn’t require reservations at the restaurants. This was very important to us because it was always difficult at other all-inclusives to pick a reservation time for dinner and plan your day around it.
Overall, we were disappointed in Excellence. Being that Excellence was 2x the price of the resort we stayed at during the first 5 days of our honeymoon, we expected it to be 2x the luxury. It was not.
It was a great resort and we had a wonderful honeymoon. But you really don’t get what you pay for. If it was ½ or even 2/3 of the price we paid I would think better of it. (and would have given it a higher rating than the 2 I am giving it here on tripadvisor)
I am going in order from bad good.
Housekeeping- Housekeeping was horrendous. We spent at least 5% of our honeymoon either frustrated about it or complaining to an employee about it. Not one day went by that we didn’t get: turndown service, a full daytime room cleaning, or both. We called each time this happened and were apologized to and told it wouldn’t happen again. We also talked to the front desk and the night manager. Everyone was full of apologies but it was never corrected. You don’t pay the big bucks for that kind of service. Better housekeeping can be found at Motel 6.
Beach-
We are VERY glad the Palladium resort had a gorgeous beach, because the Excellence beach was just plain ugly. If Excellence was the only place we went to on our honeymoon we’d be extremely disappointed because we love to go in the water and relax. The seaweed wasn’t the only problem, the water was simply no different than an east coast beach here in the US.
Pool-
The pool was fine, but not really gorgeous as you would expect a “5*” resort to be. There were tiles missing, and it just looked kind of “old”. Im surprised there havent been efforts to renovate the pools.
Room-
Pretty standard for all-inclusives. Sure the fixtures were a little nicer, the wood looked prettier. but we were surprised that the regular rooms had the “open bathroom” concept that the cheaper all-inclusive resorts do. The fact that they cater to couples and honeymoons and try to be romantic contradicts the idea of hearing your significant other go to the bathroom. Rooms were average.
General Facilities-
Yes, the grounds are beautiful. But two smaller complaints:
1.It’s definitely hard to get a lounge chair in one of the more prime areas. There are always a lot near the spa which is a nice area to hang out, but the drink waiters don’t come by there and the bars are really far away. To make up for the lack of lounge chairs where people want to be, they should add staff that services all of the pools.
2.There is a definite lack of bathrooms around the pool areas. This might be a reason we saw people at the pool bar for hours that never got out to use the restroom. If they were more convenient and plentiful it might encourage people to not pee in the pools.
Staff-
The staff were pretty average. I know a lot of comments have been made here about the lack of English abilities for most of the staff. I will say this is pretty true and we normally wouldn’t care or notice BUT the previous resort (again half the price) had staff members that were all perfectly fluent. It surprised us that with the rates Excellence charges its guests that they couldn’t pay a better rate to attract candidates with better English skills. Again, we really didn’t care about the language barrier, but I must admit it did lead to a lot of wrong orders at restaurants and bars. No biggie when you are on vacation.
Food-
The dinners were by far the BEST thing about the resort. The food was really top-notch. We LOVED “the grill” and ate there three times! The Mexican was fun too. The Italian was tasty but the atmosphere was strange (for both the Italian AND Barcelona), it felt like you were at an old person’s home cafeteria in Florida rather than a luxury resort. The no reservations policy was FANTASTIC.
Lunches were good, but got very boring by the 4th day. Really there are three options, the pizza place, the buffet at Barcelona or the Lobster House/Grill which serve the same things. The grill/lobster house lunch food left a lot to be desired.
The breakfast buffet at Barcelona was great!
ROOM SERVICE WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. They came exactly when they said they would. The food was hot when it should be and cold when it should be cold. Amazing. They had a DELICIOUS club sandwich that I wished they served at the restaurants. The room service was the best part of this resort.
