We went on our honeymoon at Secrets Excellence Cancun from October 11th to the 17th. Everything went smooth as can be on our flight in. We had arranged with Secrets to have a car pick us up at the hotel, and indeed there was a man with our names on a sign waiting for us when we arrived. We were driven to the resort (and despite everything we had read the driver didn't speed). We arrived to the resort, were handed cool towels when we arrived, which was greatly appreciated!
We checked in, which went very fast. The bellboy who escorted us to our room (Angel) gave us a little tour. What can we say, except the staff were soooooo friendly and the resort was absolutely beautiful! All the rooms are full of marble, including the large walk in shower which we both loved. We got a king size bed, very comfortable, our view was of Spa Island which was actually wonderful because all day you could hear the soothing music from the spa. The room was exceptionally clean, the whirlpool tub in the room was also wonderful, we used it twice while we were there.
Our restaurant review: We went to El Patio the first night, good food (just not the kind of mexican food us coloradans are used to, we like beans and hot salsa). Ambiance was great though, the waiters were absolutely wonderful.
We went to Bordeaux our second night, this place had my favorite food. I had duck and my husband had some kind of liver patte. Suprisingly, the food was wonderful. This is the only restaurant we had to wait to be seated, only about 20 minutes. You have to try their desserts!!
The third night was Himitsu, the asian restaurant and our second favorite. You must try the sushi sampler for your appitizer, it was wonderful!! Beautiful restaurant.
We ate at Oceana the fourth night, wonderful fish!! I had Mahi Mahi and my husband had some Chilean fish. Beautiful to eat only feet away from the beach and see the huge moon over the ocean. Very romantic.
Our fifth night we ate at Portofino. You must try their 4 cheese lasagna, crazy good. We had a wonderful waiter, Edy. He was my favorite waiter because he tried his hardest to teach us Spanish while we ordered.
Last night there was back to El Patio. We didn't get a chance to try Da Mario, their pizza place. We also didn't get to eat at the Seaside Grill (right next to Oceana), but we ate at the Seaside Grill everyday for lunch and just loved their food. All the waiters will go out of their way to please you. The food presentation was amazing and suprisingly tasted just the same.
For breakfast we ordered room service, yes, everyday. They brought it in and set everything out for you with the same precision as one of the sit down restaurants.
We went to the spa, and if you get a chance just bite the bullet and do it. We had hour long deep tissue massages, but were happily suprised to know that we had to go through an hour long gauntlet of their spa circuit first. We personally like the steam room. Honestly, we thought this was worth the money, and the massages were just wonderful!
As for the beach, they have a nice stretch there. I didn't like the sea grass on the shore, but I guess that's were it's supposed to be, right? Water was warm. It was red flag on our first day and yellow all the others. We took a paddle boat out, loved that. We also booked a snorkling tour, but it was cancelled due to rough water (hurricane wilma was coming...) Weather was 95-97, only cloudy one day we were there. The waiters on the beach came around regularly, which is always good.
The entertainment review: They show movies pretty much every night in their open theatre, we watched all of them. While we were there we say My Brothers (didn't like that one), Hitch, Psycho, Million Dollar Baby and Constantine. Pretty new movies. Some nights they showed a movie right after on the beach, but we didn't go to those because we stayed in the theatre and watched the shows they put on. They had a comedian from Boston (freaking funny), an Elvis impersonator, an international show, a Mexican festival and a circus show. They did pretty well (the sound guy seemed to have issues sometimes but we were ok with that). Overall, we enjoyed the shows, (I was up on stage twice, my husband said I had a bullseye on my forehead).
We never left the resort, and didn't feel we needed to. It was our honeymoon and it was the most romantic time I've spent with my husband. Honestly, it's hard not to just be insanely in love in such a beautiful place.
We left on Monday the 17th, taken to the airport in a private car (which we loved).
Hurricane Wilma hit 4 days later. As I write this, after looking at the pictures on CNN and MSNBC of the damage done by Hurricane Wilma, we only hope and pray that everyone is alright down there and that we have a place to go back and celebrate our anniversaries. Secrets Excellence Riviera Cancun was just that, excellent, and we hope that others will be able to experience exactly what we did, magic.
