5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday and absolutely loved it. The hotel is a short 20 minute taxi transfer from the airport. After being given a warm towel and a glass of champagne (which was welcome after an 11 hour flight) we were the only ones arriving at the time and check in was quick and easy and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly.

We had a swim out room in spa block 2... As everyone has said, the rooms are lovely and spacious, with a Jacuzzi bath, large walk in shower, king-size bed and seating area. Plenty of good quality toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, soap, flannels, razor, toothbrush and toothpaste, shoe shine, shower cap, sewing kit, beauty pack). Mini bar with 4 bottles of spirits, red and white wine, beer, fresh juice and bottles of fizzy drinks along with crisps, snickers, m&m’s and Oreos. We also had a bottle of champagne and a bowl of fresh fruit. Outside was another Jacuzzi bath, table, chairs, hammock and sun loungers in your own bit of garden a few steps from lazy river and got the sun for the best part of the day. The grounds are beautifully kept and there is not a room that does not have a lovely view. There is also free wifi, which I found worked everywhere in the resort, even the beach.

Housekeeping did an excellent job each day, we would go out in the morning and our room was always made up when we got back in the afternoon, the same for the turndown service each evening. Always left a chocolate and an information sheet with the next day’s weather and activities on our bed. I loved that someone came round really early in the morning to remove the cushions on our loungers and take down the hammock when the sprinklers were coming on and then come back and put them back on!!!!!!

We were surprised how extensive the room service menu was and ordered 3 times, it always came within 30 minutes, although all of it wasn’t always very hot, it was always tasty and very big portions. The X box is a great touch as you can put your dirty plates in it and not be bothered with collection.

Breakfast was an amazing buffet each day, the best I have seen in a hotel. Eggs any way you wanted them, fried, boiled, poached, scrambled, omelette with your choice of fillings, bacon (soft or crispy), sausages, at least 12 different fruits, 10 different fresh juices, many different branded cereals, porridge, several flavours of yoghurt and different muesli, 6 different kinds of bagels and all that goes on them, cheeses and cold meats, breads, toast, waffles, pancakes, tons of different pastries and you could even make yourself buck fizz and cocktails. If you couldn’t find something you liked I would like to know what you eat when you’re at home!!!! Buffet lunch was just as varied, or could be taken in the Lobster House or Grille or at the BBQ on the beach, there is also a brick oven that makes delicious fresh pizzas every day.

We tried all of the restaurants of an evening (except Basmati), I liked the fact that you didn’t have to book as I don’t always know what I will fancy to eat in the evening. Sometimes you did have to take a pager and wait for a table, but it certainly wasn’t a problem, you just went for a drink at one of the many bars and we never had to wait longer than 45 minutes. Our favourite was definitely the French, we went there 4 times and had something different each night and found the service the best of all the restaurants. The service in the lobster house was extremely poor one night, and we mentioned this to the manager on leaving, the next time we went there service was impeccable and they were obviously trying to rectify our complaint (we didn’t even think they would remember us)

The beach really is lovely here, yes there is a bit of seaweed (not the smelly, slimy stuff we get in England) but what little there is, is cleared away almost as soon as you notice it. The water could be a little choppy on windy days but certainly not enough to stop you going in for a dip, and it was really nice to watch the pelicans fishing off the old pier. The drink service could be a bit hit and miss but our last week had the same beach boy (Thomas) who would always pop up with a refill when we were getting low. We did find the pools rather cold, which was a shame as it would have been nice to use them a bit more (I only braved it once) and there wasn’t many people using them.

You could do as much activity here as you wanted to during the day, we didn’t do much but we did take the bike ride (on a tandem) into Puerto Morelos which was fun and took about 20 minutes to get there or is about a 45 minute walk along the beach, but be aware of the ‘clothing optional’ hotel on the way….. naked volleyball not such a good look!!!!! We also used the Hobie Cats several times which were included. Most of the entertainment centred around the main pool but was in the theatre if the weather wasn’t too good. Each evening there would be a band early on and a show a bit later. The shows were ok, mainly miming to backing tracks, but there were a couple of really good singers and the comedy magician was brilliant. The disco rarely had many people in it (apart from 3 of us one night)

We took one tour out of the hotel which was a jungle tour and booked through Santos on the beach (he’s the one with the hat and sunglasses) and recommend him. There was a problem with our transport on pick up (not his fault) due to the bus being held up at a road block, and he sent a private taxi to take us and bring us back to make sure it didn’t spoil our day!!!!
Now on to the sun loungers!!!! We’re both early risers and would sit on our patio on the lazy river at around 6.30 am, before going for breakfast, and watch people coming and going reserving their sunbeds, sometimes two in the shade and two in the sun, and claiming their blue floats for the day. On the occasions we spent the morning in our swim out room, we noticed most of them were not even being used. On-going to breakfast around 7 am there was no chance in getting a sunbed around the main pool, they were all reserved too. On the one occasion we did manage to get a lounger, we observed notices being put on reserved loungers but this was not followed through. We were usually at the beach around 7.30 and never had a problem finding a lounger, although that was more due to the fact that we did not want an umbrella and the front row of loungers had no shade. Most of the beds were reserved around 8-8.30, again, many of them not used.

Sorry for the long review, I have tried to put in the points that I would like to know about the hotel. All in all, this is a lovely hotel, with brilliant staff (thank you Victor or should I say Pablo who was at the stars bar on our first night, for making us so welcome and cheering us up when it was pouring with rain and always came and had a friendly chat )and excellent service and I would definitely recommend it and would return if I went back to Mexico. Excellente!!!!!

Room Tip: spa blocks 1,2 and 3 seemed to get sun most of the day

Just got back yesterday and have been making mental notes for this review. I have so many positives to convey. So for context, my wife and I are mid-forties and travelled March 16-23 with Westjet Vacations. This was our 5th trip to the area. My objective this year was to find a place as nice as El Dorado Royale but with a better beach. Mission accomplished!

Beach: simply amazing. Turquoise water, sandy bottom, warm, no erosion issues so no artificial reefs. Seaweed is a complete non-issue despite what other reviewers have suggested. The beach is flat and walkable for kms in either direction. Sand is like powdered sugar.

Property and rooms: The property is lush and impeccably clean. Nice architecture....lots of domes among the various structures. Our junior suite was on the second floor. Good space overall. Large shower (no issues with temp or pressure). Nice jacuzzi tub that worked well. Small seating area. Fairly ample balcony. Best mini-bar I have come across. Large programmable safe. Room was cleaned and re-stocked daily. One of the things I had never seen before but came to appreciate was a daily sheet of activities and other news about the next day dropped off at your room the previous evening. It was very detailed so you could plan for beach yoga, beach volley, hours for the restaurants, evening show, and dozens of other things. A great tribute to their high level of organization.

Pools: Wow. They go on and on. You are rarely not within a view of some part of a pool no matter where you are on the property. The larger pools have sections of floor tile in lighter blue and then in darker blue...emulating the color patterns you see at the beach. The temp is fine. With a 28C sun, you need something to help you cool off. Didn`t seem to deter the pool bar scene or the pool volleyball games. Also, pools all super clean. A few hot tubs around as well. They are the right temp (more warm than hot) for this climate. People seemed to make good use of them between 4-6 pm.

Food: Really amazing. I don`t get too excited about breakfast buffets. In most resorts, these areas are less elegant than the à la carte venues. This venue was very attractive and offered so many little extra options beyond a typical resort breakfast buffet (eg. carpacchio, sliced smoked duck, some traditional MX menu items). In particular, I really loved the self-serve bar for mimosas, bottled beer, or Caesars. This way, you don`t have to depend on a busy waiter for your morning libation. Lunch and a la carte meals were great. We had the best buffalo wings ever (others agreed), a piece of grouper at Spice that was better than any piece of fish I`ve ever tasted, and an outdoor buffet of traditional Mexican food that was so tasty and so much fun (ribs...yum, little corn cobs on sticks with spicy flavouring...double yum).

Alcohol: All options available. Great martinis. Canned Budweisers, too.

Fitness: The fitness centre has really up-to-date machines, nice dumbells. A great place to keep your fitness routine going if needed. Tried Beach Yoga once morning with Paolina. A very refreshing 30 mins beginner session. I`m guessing the yoga done at the Spa may have been more challenging but it usually conflicted with 11:00 am beach volley which I was not prepared to sacrifice.

The entertainment staff were very nice and professional. They run their assigned activities and don`t intrude (mingle) with guests much otherwise. We really enjoyed Karla`s Spanish lesson and Sofia`s bike tour into Puerto Morales.

Shows: We saw the Urban dance, the Circus, and the Maya show. They were all very well done. The fitness of the people involved with the first two shows was incredible (core strength out the wazoo!) while the music and costuming of the Mayan show was quite impressive.

Other positives: easy check-in and out, nice business centre with free internet.

So to sum up, my wife and I agree that we have to repeat this resort in 2014 if we can catch a deal again within our price range.

Stayed at the Excellence for four nights in March 2013.

Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Our room was large, spacious with a great bed.
Range of premium drinks in the room was great.
Beach is superb.
The grounds of the hotel are very well maintained.
The Martini bar is a great place for pre dinner drinks.
The many pools around the hotel means that you can find a spot with the ambiance to match your mood.

The food quality was not always to the standard I would pay for in a restaurant (breakfast was however excellent).

I would recommend this hotel but probably for a week stay as a maximum.

Room Tip: Had the garden room as on a budget. It was more than acceptable.

This place is GREAT. The staff could not do enough for you. Everyone was so friendly. Every employee there smiled and was happy to help with anything we needed. You truley want for nothing at this place.

The French restaurant was our favorite. Venison, Tuna, Filet Mignon, Steak Tartare, Onion soup all OUT OF THIS WORLD. We never made it to dessert.

We never left the resort, so I can't really comment on the excursions or the town.

Room Tip: I think the "Ecellence Club" is not necessary. I paid the extra money for the upgrade, bu...

Look no further you've found your resort!

We promise you won't be disappointed with this place! The food is amazing ( basmati, spice and Chez Isabelle were our favourites)!! The drinks top notch and the staff friendly and attentive. The beach is lovely- beautiful sand and safe for swimming.

The rooms are very clean and Modern. We loved the turn down service at night. The pools clean and warm.

Things that depend on the person:
The resort is about 1/2 hr from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Round trip taxi is about $90usd. We mostly stayed at the resort so didn't care. You can organise day trips that will pick you up from the resort.

You have to be an early riser to get a good spot unless your in the excellence club( which we felt was worth the extra cost!). People reserve the beds by 6am! But I'm sure it's the same at other resorts.

A lot of older couples here. We were on our honeymoon so it didn't bother us but
If your looking for a party this isn't the place for you- unless you make friends with other couples on honeymoon!! We hung out at the disco tech a few nights which is a good laugh!

Thank you excellence- you were excellent!

Perfect Spa Getaway for Moms and Daughters!

First off we arrived at the resort at 5:00 am and were greeted with our Champagne and friendly service.. Our swim up suite was not ready but they checked us into a temporary unit so we could rest / change into our suits. Our room was ready by 11:30 am unfortunately though they do not have many rooms with double beds understandably though as it is primarily a couples resort so we were not able to upgrade to the excellence club rooms but our room was quiet and the swim up pool outside our room was peaceful rooms very clean, fresh, beds are very comfy we thought and plenty of room for all your stuff.

Only restaurant we did not try was the Lobster House the rest were very very good, if you can't find something great here to eat then I am not sure what would make you happy. All the bars had great service and drinks, if there was something you wanted they gladly provided. If you want stronger drinks then ask for an extra shot no problem. The best drink and my new favorite is their famous expresso martini....awesome!!

The reason we chose this resort was because of the spa reviews which live up to its reputation.. truley awesome with reasonable prices compared to other resorts we have stayed.

People say the Exellence Playa Mujeras might be a little better but I have been to both now and I prefer ERC. The resort is smaller, to me the beach is better and you can walk to Puerto Morelos which took about 30 min. I like the more traditional hacienda feel than the modern look.

Entertainment was fun each night including live music before and after the shows. Carla with the entertainment staff was fun happy and very friendly truly an asset to the staff at ERC.

The comments about lounge chairs are true, you do need to get up early especially if you want a good spot by the main pool area, the rest of the pool areas had plenty of chairs.

We had a wonderful relaxing time and are already looking to go again next year!!

Don't look further for another resort just book it you won't regret it!!

Room Tip: If you need a double bed room call ahead of time to see areas have double beds. I think their is on...

Hotel was very pretty big rooms, great beds. the beach was great plenty of room to get sun the sun beds were awesome. The place seemed to be a little under staffed service was not that good. the bar at the Club pool closed at 5 every day. We were part of the Excellence Club and the private room for members was very nice. the food was ok the Lobster Grill was very disapionting. The other restaurants were nice very small portions. We had a ocean front room the view was great and nice breeze. This was a nice place but I don't think we would go back. The friends with us agree.

Room Tip: it is worth the money to get Ocean view or front. Some of the other pool areas lost sun to early in...
