“Beautiful rooms but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2007

Looking at the website, the hotel looked exactly like our style, high-end, boutique, not generic, etc. Arrival was terrific, picked up at the airport, given cold water bottles and refreshing towels. Our room was very beautiful, just as it appears in the website. The housekeeping is also excellent, putting flowers in our robes every evening and setting up room service meals impeccably. The resort is very quiet, to the point that couples don't even converse with one another. My husband and i were very happy to have intimate meals etc but the hotel seemed almost dead, it didn't make you want to go down for a cocktail or linger in the restaurants. The food was mediocre at best and the "free" breakfast consisted of a bit of yogurt, a slice of fruit and a roll. Watch out when ordering bottled water as they'll get you at $10 US per bottle. Best to rent a car and buy some water and even alcohol for your room and save yourself hundreds of dollars. The service was very nice, overly helpful, to the point that you feel like they are always there. Your food gets removed from the table before you are finished if you simply pause for a moment. The ocean is not swimable, all full of seaweed, no shells on the beach. The snorkeling for $174/hour also left a lot to be desired, very few intersting fish. However, given the hotels i saw in the area, i would say this is probably one of the best there.

  • Liked — the rooms and the setting overlooking the ocean
  • Disliked — the service, it was over the top, too intrusive
  • Tips/Secrets — buy your own water, don't spend the exhorbitant hotel price for it.

This resort is exquisite. The common areas, the rooms, the architecture, the spa, the pools... everything is beyond beautiful. And the service is impeccable. No request was too small or large -- always met with a smile and an "of course."

I would -- and will -- come back. This is truly paradise.

My wife and myself just returned from Paraiso del la Bonita the resort itself is nice and in a secluded area about 20 minutes outside of Cancun, however the prices isoutrageous and definately not worth the price. The room itself is spacious but I myself don't care for large flower print curtains, headboard and comforter. I myself don't mind spending money but when breakfast runs over 60 dollars for eggs that are average with a few pieces of unripe fruit and juice that is watered down I seem to wonder. Dinner isn't any better on one evening I ordered a menu pre fix for that particular evening which included beef carpaccio for appetizer and grilled duck breast with foie gras and chocalate torte for dessert each course came with wine for a mere 130 dollars plus the waiter brought the wine after each course was halfway finished, nothing special about the food nice presentation however flavor lacks. If you want a meal with a tasty flere please go to John Grays Kitchen in Puerto Morelos my wife and myself had a goat cheese pizza with carmelized onions for an app for entree had lobster grilled with caribbean spices over grilled asparagus with a truffle mashed potatos. Grilled Veal Loin with a wild mushroom red wine demi-glaze sauce. Dessert a excellant sponge cake with warm rum buttered mangoes,Chocalate Torte that served warm with fresh figs melted in my mouth for a mere 100 dollars. Dress casual elegance we made the mistake of over dressing for the occasion. The pool at the resort was beautiful and the grounds are kept spotless. The spa is overpriced for massages starting at 160 dollars plus dont forget everything and I mean everthing gets 10% tax added to it plus 15% gratiuty even for a massage plus then it stated extra gratiuty added. Plus they have a small hobie cat on the beach for guests to use however when I made my reservation they said they had one at no charge. However when I inquired about it at the resort they stated 80 dollars but back in the room the brochure stated 60 dollars. So to some it up if you want to be overcharged and nickeled and dimed to death stay at Paraiso del la Bonita, but if you want to stay somewhere in the Rivera Mayan that has luxury and food the is amazing please stay at Ikal del Mar went there in March and I made a huge mistake at staying at Paraiso Del la Bonita this time.

Yes, it was expense. BUT - no regrets. Service was wonderful, food very tasty. Yoga by the sea every morning, this is not a lively place, you will feel rested and rejuvenated, especially with the amazing massages - daily. There was sea weed, no waves, I could live with it since the pool was one of the prettiest I've yet seen. The water is best now near Tulum, but the drive is long. The grounds arer immaculate and my husband and I agree the best bath of our lives. We would loev to come back.

  • Liked — Pool and elegant grounds
  • Disliked — Tipping not included
  • Tips/Secrets — do the yoga

Overrated and outrageously expensive.
The food was OK but only one restaurant out of the three was open.
Beach appalling and water unswimable due sea weed - shame as only 10K's further down the water displayed beautiful azure colour.
Clearly the hotel was on a business development push as trails of Travel agents trapsing through.
The front desk was hopeless and completely unhelpful.

The food was okay but after 5 days we were bored of the food and the price is an abuse. The rooms were only ok. The bathroom is tiny and almost no water pressure in the shower. The staff in the front desk need to be replaced! And now I understand beach pictures on the web site, is horrible!! They have Great Spa.!! And the pool is fabulous. The location is wonderful, a short trip to Playa Del Carmen

Overall a disappointing experience hence the poor rating, which is yet taking into account the fact that the hotel had just reopened (being closed for massive refurbishment due to the hurricane).

- Location: OK, pretty secluded. However the mangrove still hasn't recovered (and apprently won't before years) which makes it a bit of a sad, devastated or desolated landscape.

- Beach: seaweed is truly plentiful (eventhough they clean the beach from time to time with a tractor), swimming in the sea is not that pleasurable. When/if you book directly, don't listen to them saying "it's fine at the moment", there will always be seaweed (in stark contrast to some other nearby hotels' beaches)

- Buildings: apart from the grand entrance and the bar by the pool, the constructions are bog standard (2 to 3 storeys, very square) buildings and clearly lack of charm and of a local touch. It looks like any cheaper resort.

- Bedrooms: huge, nice bathrooms, great bed but once again no charm at all. They're all the same with just fabrics that differ from one to the others. As to fabrics, one had better be keen on vivid colors and massive flower prints when opting for the carribean style.

- Service: spotless as far as bar, restaurants, cars and the boat are concerned but neither well organized nor responsive for activities (they forgot to tell us that the cruise had been cancelled or had to be chased for updates).

- Great spa, gym, yoga courses. Nice pools (all round shaped apart from the salt water smaller one).

- Food: Breakfast: no buffet. the inclusive b'fast formula is way below average. Good restaurants.

- Last, but to be mentioned as it's very much unexpected from this level of hotels: early April, the refurbishment work still wasn't completed i.e. we suffered from the noise of the workers on the roof, of the tractors (planting some the palm trees), of the workers building the tapas restaurant, of some other tractors going back and forth: trying to relax or to do yoga by a worksite is peculiar... As to the beach, they had plastic chairs and, contrarily to the next hotel, there weren't any huts (some more work to be done?).
