We have just returned from an amazing August trip to Azul! This was our third visit and look forward to a return. This is such a great family resort
We arrived early and came from a stay at a local condo in Puerto Morelos. We had our swim suits on, so we left our bags with the bell boy, went to have lunch and then headed for the pool! When it came time to get our rooms I will have to say that disappointment began to set in! Since Azul is first class they handled things like a first class resort should!! I am a big fan of Azul and I could sugar coat this but wanted to share the entire experience with honesty.
We booked a swim out jr. suite for three nights. This was our 13th visit to the area and wanted to try something different. We stayed 5 nights in a wonderful condo and since this was our first time to try a condo we wanted to end up being pampered at a resort! One of the biggest reasons we wanted to go to Azul, besides that we love it, is that with the new renovations we would have a swim out suite! Our girls were really looking forward to jumping off our patio into a pool!! So....when we went to the lobby to check in and were told that they did not have a swim out jr. suite for that night or our entire stay......I thought I was going to explode! Being the first class resort that Azul is, they put us in a honeymoon suite the first night and the last two nights in a swim out honeymoon suite! What a HUGE spacious suite it was....tons of room!! The family was happy!! I do want to add that I was told that booking a swim out jr. suite did not guarantee me a bedding type (which doesn't make any sense to me!!). We were a family of four and not small kids, but teens. They were going to give us a jr. swim out with a king and 2 roll aways which would never work! So....heads up, if you book a jr. swim out, I would contact the resort a week or two out of your stay and confirm bedding type!!! Or......maybe you could get a honeymoon suite too!!!!
The honeymoon suite is absolutely amazing and huge. Large bathroom with huge jacuuzi tub, large shower with a rain shower and large double sink area. I will say that they could use some more towel racks/hooks. They want you to re-use your towels but there is only one hook to hang one towel on! There is also a large closet space with tons of room to put your clothes, shoes, etc. A living area with a couch that doubles as a bed. Then a room divider that a twin bed pulls out from and on the opposite side is a dinette area. Very amazing space! Then to slide open the patio door and jump into the pool was wonderful!! My family of four was very comfortable in this suite…me, hubby, 13 & 17 yr old girls. The pull out bed and couch were both comfy for them!
The resort is beautiful everywhere! Lush and well maintained landscape. The resort is small and can get from one end of the property to the other very quickly. This is one of the reasons that we love coming here. There are 3 pools and since we were in the swim up suites we were at the newly renovated one in front of the suites. Drink service around that pool did not happen too much for us, but no problem since it's so easy to get to the pool bar quickly! It would be nice to have access to the Chil bar. We loved swimming in the swim out pool area too and I would have to say that was the best family pool time since we usually had it to ourselves! We really enjoyed this pool and having the swim out suite. It was great have the room right there to go in and out when we wanted…..especially to go to the bathroom!!
Also, the beach beds were amazing. I was so happy that now you can book them the day in advance so you could always have one without a problem. The swinging beds were the best and the service around the beach beds was wonderful! The water in front of the resort is beautiful and crystal clear. I have no idea why people will complain about the beach/water. They rake the seaweed everyday and it was never a problem for us. We also snorkeled and found several fish. Its best by the pier area, I think the fish like to hide under it! This was plenty of snorkeling for us! If you really love snorkeling then you need to go into the town of Puerto Morelos, the reef is so wonderful to see many fish!
All the food was great and we tried all the restaurants. As a family with kids, it was nice to have the breakfast buffet. It would be nice to have a small buffet option at lunch and dinner too for a faster service if that is what you are in the mood for. Sometimes kids (and grownups!!) just want something quick and move on. The service at all the restaurants was great. Although it seemed too slow at times at Blue. Once we had a two hour dinner which is just toooo long. I know its Mexico time, but that is just too much for a meal at a resort with kids!! It was great to have La Mancha for quick snacks whenever you needed something during the day! Loved having all the fruit there too! The new Italian restaurant was our favorite! Loved the food, service and décor! Also, make sure you visit the tequila bar and sample many of the choices. When we were there the bartender described a bunch of them and we had samples! Really fun…..I never knew there was a tequila cream!! Yum yum!
SWIM OUT SUITES:
I want to touch more on the swim out suites since this is what I researched so much before we left. Couldn't find all the info I wanted so hopefully this will help someone! There are two sides of villas with a wooden walkway between the two. Villa 7 is the closest to the main areas and walking out your door and down the walkway gives you quick access to Blue. If you are in Villa 8 you have to walk all the way in front of where Villa 7 goes into their rooms and then around the back over to Villa 8. Or you can walk down the wooden walkway which at that point you could see your patio, but then you walk around to the other side to access your room. Villa 7 has the best access to your room but of course this is a small resort so never too much walking, I just wanted to point this out! In Villa 7, there are 8 first/second floor rooms. Villa 701-703 are not swim out. Can't remember 701, 703 is a jr suite, 702 and 705 are honeymoon suites (described above) 705 is swim out; 704, 706-708 are junior swim up suites. There is a tiny swim area in front of 704, but of course it leads to the larger area. Then 705 you jump into that tiny area, but the living area overlooks the larger pool area. The swim out area is the largest in front of 706-708. This was the villa we were in so I can describe it the best. Villa 8….I'm pretty sure I have this correct…..801/802 one is a honeymoon suite and the other a jr suite; these are not swim out suites. 803, 805-807 are jr swim out suites and 804 a honeymoon swim out suite. The suites on top of all these lower floors are I'm sure the same type room. The best views would be from Villa 7, but the front rooms of Villa 8 would have better views. The upper floors would have a great ocean view but maybe not the best for Villa's 805-806. Of course all these rooms are super close to the newly renovated pool and the one we spent the most time in. There were plenty of loungers around the pool too.
Here's what I learned about what's coming for Azul. The new construction will be more swim out suites. This swim out area will connect to a pool and there will also be a new grill there. Didn't get clarity if that would be something mainly for the pool area or not. I believe they are building around 30 more rooms. I was told they plan to have it completed by Dec 2011!! Then they will start to renovate the older rooms. They are also, very soon, going to re-do the lobby area and move it to a new location. This is to make way for a lobby bar which would be a great addition and something that is missing at this resort. They just opened the Italian recently and a new Latin restaurant should be opening real soon. Actually, it looked mostly ready to go when we were there! The asian restaurant was closed when we were there and they are renovating it to make it larger and nicer!
I have to say that Azul is still our favorite. Love the size, the food and the people! Everyone we saw was so wonderful and helpful! Always greeting you with a smile and an "hola"!! After you are there one day, they remember your name! Once my husband and I had breakfast alone and the host asked where our girls were!!! Another time I was carrying two drinks and chips/guac when one of the staff ran over to help me! Wonderful staff!
Hopefully I remembered everything! Sorry this is so long!! We had a wonderful time and wouldn't hesitate to return. Azul is one of very few small boutique resorts and we love smaller resorts. Hopefully we will be back to experience all the new additions. Please private message me if you have any questions! Also, I have a resort map if you would like a copy, just private message me with your email.
