We just returned home from what can only be described as a dream vacation. This was our first clothing optional experience and I have to say it was fantastic. I started researching resorts in May and booked Desire in July. I have read and re-read the trip advisor reviews for Desire and several other resorts and based on this research I concluded that Desire would be the best resort for us to attend. Wow, I hit a home run on this one...
We went to Desire to celebrate our 25th anniversary and to feed off the energy found at Desire. I especially like the couples only requirement at Desire, I had no interest in being surrounded by a bunch of 'Barneys', circling around waiting to feed on those who find themselves alone and vulnerable. There are plenty of resorts for singles to go and paw each other; thankfully Desire is not one of them. There are plenty of people who enjoy hedonistic living, but there is a higher standard and a classier ambiance at Desire. Interaction is never far away however, nobody is being taken advantage of.
We are not in the lifestyle and although we were comfortable socializing with couples in the lifestyle, it is not for us, at this time...
When reading the reviews available for Desire there are many differences of opinion and degrees of satisfaction expressed. I can report that based on our experiences, this little resort provided a level of service which will not be found anywhere else. If you want to go to a place where you are denied nothing; and, where all the staff make you feel like you are the most important people in the world, Desire must be your final destination.
The food is very good, the drinks are well made and plentiful. Desire is what you make of it. If you can go there with a positive mindset and are open to meeting people, you cannot help but have the time of your life.
As this was a celebration of 25 years of happy marriage, we stayed in a Passion Suite. It was worth every dollar. We lived in luxury which was ensured by around the clock concierge service. No request was denied, all met without the slightest hesitation.
Jorge, our concierge for most of our stay was exceptional in his care and attention, displaying a sincere committment our enjoyment. He attended to our every want, including making our dinner reservations at Suki. We both committed to not worry about time while at the resort. We were served the breakfast of our choosing, each morning on our terrace. A great way to start your day. If we needed anything to eat ,or more drinks in our room it was never more than a phone call away. We never waited 5 minutes from making a request to it being provided. The Passion Suites are equipped with a four person jacuzzi spa which was used with enthusiasm, at the end of the day, or any other time that the urge manifested.
Our first two days at Desire were spent predominantly on the beach. Another benefit to having a Passion Suite is the assignment of a beach bed during your stay. We originally spent time on the beach because we were wiped out from our trip to the resort. As we were there first and foremost to be together we did not miss the pool during this time.
Kelp washing up on the beach is often referred to in these reviews. Yes it is present, but come on, it's a beach on the carribean sea. There is bound to be both flora and fauna in a setting as natural as Desire. Desire is surrounded by mangroves and jungle.
I never gave the kelp any real notice. I grew up on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada and learned at an early age that if you're not swimming in a chlorinated pool then you're not swimming alone. Plus the water is about 5 or 6 degrees warmer than the warmest water found where we normally go to get sand on our feet.
Now for the best part of spending time on the beach..... Africa.
Africa is amazing! She is lovely, and never stops making her orbit of the beach beds and chaise lounges making sure everyone in her care is provided for. She moves around the beach with grace and a happy spirit which is contagious. It is obvious that she truly enjoys what she does and all benefit from the pride she takes in her responsibilities. No hand is empty for long while Africa is on the beach. She not only provides refreshment always with a radiant smile; she also looks out for her guests. After drinking 15 frozen mojitos in an afternoon I fell asleep on a chaise lounge, for how long I don't know. I was awakened by a sweet voice explaining that the wind was picking up and that she did not want me to get cold, or sunburned. As I opened my eyes, Africa was covering me with a large beach towel to guarantee my protection and well being. Where else could you experience this level of service, but at Desire. We both adore Africa and our day was lessened when we did not see her.
The other guests at Desire are friendly and open to meeting new people. Too often people go on vacation, spend a week or more surrounded by other people, and still they return home without ever meeting new people and making new friends. Anyone who spends time at Desire, and leaves without making new friends must be anti-social or a snob. As you move around the resort everyone is smiling, happy and eager to return a friendly greeting. I believe that when we shed our clothing we shed the normal inhibitions and pre-conceptions which make us guarded among strangers. The people who go to Desire are ordinary people; fit, unfit and varying in age. What makes them extraordinary is the strength of their relationships and their obvious happiness being together. Those we met at Desire were happy couples. We were all there to enjoy each other and those around us. There was never any pressure to do anything we were not comfortable with and we never encountered judgement of any kind.
The grounds are impeccably maintained, rooms are very clean and housekeeping is excellent. The activities coordinators are energetic and engaging. If you chose to participate you will have a great time. If your choice is to spectate, you still have fun. The nightly activities are hopping and attended by most of the guests to the resort. The jacuzzi lounge is where the overt activities take place but it was overly crowded the few times we went up to check it out so I cannot fairly report on this area of the resort. We don't feel deprived as we had our own jacuzzi spa in our suite.
The restaurants are well appointed and as one would expect the service was exceptional. Our favorite server was Carlos and we requested him whenever we dined at El Arrecife. We only dined at Il Piacere one evening, the food and service were both excellent. Our restaurant of choice was Suki, we reserved seatings at the Tepanyaki grills whenever we were able. It was at Suki that we met several new friends, and we discovered a decadence known as "Volcan de Chocolat". Lunches were enjoyed at Tentazione by the pool. There were plenty of choices available so that we didn't have to eat the same thing every day. I would be remiss if I did not comment on the lounge bar and the late night pizza made to order. It was the perfect way to end the fantastic days we enjoyed the entire time were at Desire.
In response to any less favorable reviews of Desire Cancun, I feel sorry for you. You missed out on what should have been one of lifes most enjoyable times. Perfection doesn't exist, errors occur (although not with us at Desire). The true messure of service is how they are corrected. Our trip to desire was incredible, our only sadness was when we left. We are home now, with a fresh and renewed love and appreciation for each other. Desire Resort and Spa, Cancun is exceptional. It was an experience that has left us enriched, and one for which we will return.
As for the executive membership solicitation when you arrive, it's their job to present it to all arriving guests. Be polite, be mature, be considerate; allow them to finish and politely decline. They will attempt a polite rebuttal but in the end your happiness is their number one priority, so get over it and enjoy your vacation.
The amenities provided in the Passion Suites justify the additional cost if your wish is to be pampe...
