“Beautifully crafted base”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Built around a natural spring whose waters meander throughout the grounds creating beautiful streams and pools, which are teaming with fish and frogs, making a wonderfully calm oasis amid the semi-arid countryside.
Anyone coming to this part of Kenya could do well to read parts of Wilfred Thesiger's "My Kenya Days" as he lived around here for many years and describes the beauty of the peoples and the wildlife with great understanding.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the river and so any of them will be wonderful.

Dear guest,

It is always a pleasure to receive such good feedback. We appreciate having you spend time with us. It is indeed an honour. The natural springs, the crisp clear streams and clear ponds with the beautiful fishes (including the buffalo springs tilapia and the mud fish to name a few) also works magic for those of us living here. Born free country is indeed a haven for movie makers as indeed we are proud of this unique location.

The team at Sarova Shaba takes great pride in hosting you and we are looking forward to your next visit.

Thank you.

I had stayed at Sarova Shaba a year and a half ago, and my review was a 100% praise with no compromises.
This time, we still had a great experience although I feel some details pointed to the possibility (or need) of constant effort for improvement and excellence.
The shower head in our room was so clogged with limescale that the water jets pointed everywhere (mostly outside the bathtub) but towards the right place. This is not good for a five-star establishment.
When we checked in, the reception staff appeared to be overwhelmed and a little "out of breath". Admittedly, it was a long week-end with a public holiday, and at 100% hotel occupancy some bottleneck can be expected, but the staff on duty appeared to do nothing to avoid passing the sense of discomfort on to the guests they were attending to.
The variety of dishes available at the buffet felt a little less broad (or international) than during our previous visit, which made me wonder whether the chef had changed.
Anything else was, as for our previous stay, lovely and impeccable.

Samburu National Reserve shares the borders with the Buffalo Spring National Reserve and the Shaba National Reserve. Of all the parks in Kenya they are the ones with the smallest number of sightings, at least in our trip. However, this lodge is the place to stay if you go there. Sarova is a chain offering high-end accommodations in Kenya, and this is the best of their three lodges we stayed.

It is located in the Shaba reserve, along the Uaso Nyiro river, and offers 85 chalets with views on the river and their beautiful lush garden. The garden surrounds the rooms, and big windows on both sides of the rooms offer plenty of views. You can see monkeys around and crocodiles in the river.

The lodge has a big swimming pool to relax after a game viewing, and the restaurant is located in an open space on the first floor of their central building, with a lot of trees around and the river flowing nearby.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are better, you have full views of the garden and what is going on there, with pl...

Dear guest,

Indeed the region is unique in that you can visit the three parks on one park ticket (Shaba, Buffalo springs and samburu.). The region is unique to the 'Samburu special five'.

Located on a spring, Sarova Shaba is indeed a Jewel on this oasis.

We take great pride in your positive remarks and do look towards hosting you yet again.

Karibu.

The Sarova Shaba Lodge was incredible! On the drive in we passed by mile after mile of what seems like totally inhospitable land. It didn't seem like there was anything out there, until we arrived at the gate and an amazing lush lodge right on the river. We were greeted with cold towels soaked in eucalyptus (I just stood there breathing it in for a few minutes). The rooms were spacious and felt like home (minus the TV). The dining hall featured buffet-style food and "Chicken George" at the bar was friendly and served up some top-notch cocktails. There is a crocodile viewing area that didn't disappoint, a gift shop that was reasonably priced, and plenty of monkeys for amusement. At the bar there are TVs where you can catch up on sports or news.

I've stayed here five times and always look forward to returning. The setting along the river, surrounded by mature trees and landscaped water features is delightful. The swimming pool is a wonderful place to relax after a dusty game drive. The service in every area of the hotel is so hospitable and attentive. The food at every meal is well presented and varied. The accommodations are roomy and attractive. And the animal sightings in the surrounding areas are plentiful and amazing.

Room Tip: Rooms are spread out along the river front from either side of the reception/dining/swimming pool ar...

This lodge is truly an exotic oasis. First, Traveling over lonely highways, passing herds of camels being led by their nomadic owners. Then down a dusty road, through gullies filled with wild baboons you arrive at the lodge, it is settled in along the river. Smiling attendants greet you with wet washcloths to wipe away the grime. The bungalows are quite spacious and well appointed. Ours had a view to the river where we could watch the Marabou storks preen in the sunshine. Meals are served in an open air dining area, with a Samburu warrior to keep the monkeys away from the tables. All of the meals we ate there were very good. It was a real treat to have Steven make us one of his special salads. All of the staff was attentive to our needs and were courteous and friendly. All of the game drives to the surrounding areas were very good and the sunsets were spectacular. I only wish we could have spent more time there.
Asante sana Sarova Shaba.

Dear guest,

It was an honour of you to choose to stay with us. It was quite a pleasure that we lived up to your expectations.

The options available to get to Shaba are all truely exceptional. The drive from Nairobi through Nanyuki through the Timau wheat farms and 'the rolling hills is awsome. The other option through Embu, Meru is also one not to miss. The streatch from Meru to Isiolo is just a mere 25 minutes easy drive. Then the flying option which takes only 50 minutes from Nairobi where you touch down in the parks and begin with a game drive.

Apart from the additional activities like the 'Bush dinner', Bush breakfast, Nature walks and diverse cultures, there are several other reasons to appreciate Shaba.

Sundowner cocktails, gorge trecks and sharinki falls excursion will blow you away.

Hope you will try this out next time.

Cheers.

From the minute you meet Wycliffe at the reception then find the work Geoffrey has done in the rooms to the food everything is just wow. Am now waiting to try out the massage. I can only imagine the experience. Trust me I know it'll be worth it.
