“Exotic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

This lodge is truly an exotic oasis. First, Traveling over lonely highways, passing herds of camels being led by their nomadic owners. Then down a dusty road, through gullies filled with wild baboons you arrive at the lodge, it is settled in along the river. Smiling attendants greet you with wet washcloths to wipe away the grime. The bungalows are quite spacious and well appointed. Ours had a view to the river where we could watch the Marabou storks preen in the sunshine. Meals are served in an open air dining area, with a Samburu warrior to keep the monkeys away from the tables. All of the meals we ate there were very good. It was a real treat to have Steven make us one of his special salads. All of the staff was attentive to our needs and were courteous and friendly. All of the game drives to the surrounding areas were very good and the sunsets were spectacular. I only wish we could have spent more time there.
Asante sana Sarova Shaba.

Dear guest,

It was an honour of you to choose to stay with us. It was quite a pleasure that we lived up to your expectations.

The options available to get to Shaba are all truely exceptional. The drive from Nairobi through Nanyuki through the Timau wheat farms and 'the rolling hills is awsome. The other option through Embu, Meru is also one not to miss. The streatch from Meru to Isiolo is just a mere 25 minutes easy drive. Then the flying option which takes only 50 minutes from Nairobi where you touch down in the parks and begin with a game drive.

Apart from the additional activities like the 'Bush dinner', Bush breakfast, Nature walks and diverse cultures, there are several other reasons to appreciate Shaba.

Sundowner cocktails, gorge trecks and sharinki falls excursion will blow you away.

Hope you will try this out next time.

Cheers.

From the minute you meet Wycliffe at the reception then find the work Geoffrey has done in the rooms to the food everything is just wow. Am now waiting to try out the massage. I can only imagine the experience. Trust me I know it'll be worth it.

I stayed at Shaba lodge for 2 nights with a group of work colleagues. The staff are really friendly & welcoming and the setting is truly beautiful. Though there is the opportunity to do activities such as game drives, it's generally a really quiet place ideally suited to relaxation.
I would recommend a treatment at the massage tent as they are excellent value for money and the therapist was very good.
One think to be aware of is that the staff advised us not to drink the tap water, though we did anyway and were fine. (buying bottled water there was the same price as a large beer!)
Personally a couple of days here were enough for me as there isn't a great deal to do beside laying by the pool, but its well worth a stay if you are in the area, especially to see the big crocodiles at the river!

I've stayed at Shaba Lodge a number of times in the last few months as I'm working locally each time I've stayed there I've been well received and catered for.

The rooms are neatly laid out, with all the expected facilities of a good hotel with the slight exception that a few rooms are looking a little tired in their bathrooms.

If you self drive to the location you will have to pay the Reserve Gate fee of ksh 1000 (£7) per person or if you ask not to have a ticket and say your going to Shaba you'll pay half that.

The food is to a high standard and I've yet to suffer from any ills despite eating salads, which can be a danger area in some parts.

The staff are all extremely friendly, from the young lady handing damp towels to the dusty new arrivals to the barmen who is more than ready to bring you drinks. however this is not an all inclusive lodge and you can soon rattle up a large bill if you stray from local Tuskar Beer and hit the imported spirits.

During my most recent stay (Mid Aug 13) I used their Safari Driver to take my wife and I to the Samburu Reserve and it was worth every penny the guide worked very hard to find us all the animals that were about that day. The drivers all know each other and point in each other in the right direction to get a good days animal spotting in.

Tipping, this is always worth mentioning to any newcomers to Africa, your expected to tip, everyone. from the guy carrying your bags to your driver and barmen. how much depends on you but expect that anything done for you is not done for free.

All in Shaba is thoroughly recommended and I'll be back again soon.

The food is buffet style and tend to be

Room Tip: rooms are all much the same, some are double or twins.

This resort is located in a oasis of sorts. In fact, the famed Ewaso Nyiro river passes alongside its fence.
During my stay there, I was simply wowed by the various riverlets that cross the numerous footpaths to the rooms. Sometimes, my friends and I would dip our feet in the tiny pools and watch the numerous multicolored fish curiously inspect our feet. Other times, we would just sit at the strategically placed seats and watch the river make its way through the site.

Every evening, the hotel feeds a large number of crocodiles that come close to the electric fence. As would be expected, there is quite some action between the large crocs.

Great place to spend a long weekend with famiky and friends.

Dear guest,

It is always a pleasure to receive such good feedback. We appreciate having you spend time with us. It is indeed an honour. The natural springs, the crisp clear streams and clear ponds with the beautiful fishes (including the buffalo springs tilapia and the mud fish to name a few) also works magic for those of us living here.

The team at Sarova Shaba takes great pride in hosting you and we are looking forward to your next visit.

Many thanks.

17 Sept 13 - This is my 4th stay at Shaba Lodge and after traveling around Kenya to lots of different lodges this has to be the best lodge by far, the food is amazing and the staff are so lovely. I would have rated this 5 stars but the rooms are a little shabby and worn and not all rooms have a fridges. It's a shame there is no TV in the rooms but it still doesn't change anything. The staff and Chicken George who works in the chemi chemi bar always ensures we have a great stay. The pool area is lovely again one of the best pools I have been to. Thank you Anthony (manager) for yet another brilliant weekend. Can't wait to come back again.

Room Tip: Top floors you get a great view over the river. Ask for the quiet area too.
