“An oasis in Shaba National reserve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2011

The lodge is a very beautiful and a wonderful place to stay although it's a part of the Sarova Lodges chain. They have a very nice view of Uaso Nyiro River and it's located in the middle of the desert of the extinct Mt. Shaba. I really enjoyed my 2 nights here. There is a very nice pool and the restaurant is built on the second floor with the view of the pool and the bar is located underneath. The food is very good and as usual is served in buffet style and geared toward Indian food. There are 2 samburu wariors whose jobs are to chase any naughty monkeys who are ready to steal any food left on the plates. They had built small streams into small ponds around in the area. There is a feeding station to feed the nile crocodiles. The internet is available for 300 shillings for 15 minutes. The bedroom and the bathroom are huge and clean. I think they keep the electricity on all day long. The spa/massage service is very nice and I'd definitely recommend it. The only problem that I had was with the door because of the key. The staff is very responsive to my complain about some bugs trying to build a nest in front of my window. Overall, it's truly an oasis and I'd highly recommended and I would definitely return to this lodge again.

Dear guest,

It was a pleasure hosting you though a while back. Your positive feedback was indeed very encouraging and we are pleased to inform you that we have made a number of upgrades in the property that you most definately should visit Sarova Shaba once again.

A state of the art buffet layout that meets the highest in hygiene standards and frontage cooking, kitchen upgrade and we are now the only facility in the region on the grid.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2011

We stayed at 4 different Sarova hotels on our recent safari and thought each was superb and unique.
Shaba lodge was amazing--fantastic, huge pool, rooms spacious enough for a family with excellent beds and linens, gorgeous grounds (large enough to walk around in, which is unusual for most game lodges), delicious, 5-star quality food, and very kind , attentive staff (except one of the gate guards).
The game drives were nice from here, but we were more than content to spend the day viewing wildlife from the hotel--baboons, monkeys, crocodiles, birds. We even were able to catch what our son called the "baboon d-day" in which across the river we saw at least 100 baboons march down to the water in a line at around 5 p.m. It was an amazing sight!
The only thing that ruined our stay there was an observation of how a gate guard treated 2 Samburu men who work at the hotel. It really bothered us. They were leaving the premises with nothing but a large, empty, plastic bottle (we assume they were going to use it to haul water from streams or elsewhere) and retrieving their machetes (which I am sure are used to protect themselves as they walk home barefoot through the park. The first Samburu village we saw was a 30 minute drive away, and they do it barefoot!)
We asked the guard if we could pay them to take us for a walk outside the electric fence. He said no, and told us they would "kill" us with their machetes.
The guard told the Samburu men they could not take the bottle. They were speaking Swahili and you could tell what was going on by their body language. We don't speak Swahili so we asked the guard what he was doing and he said that they were "stealing" the bottle. We said it was trash and they were probably going to use it for water. He said the kitchen needed it, yet hours before we had walked to the area that was the hotel's dump, to see old plastic bottles, partially burned, strewn everywhere.
Maybe it is true that they might kill us, and maybe the kitchen really did need the empty plastic bottle, and maybe we are just ignorant Americans who don't understand their culture or what it takes to run a hotel in this area, but as our son said, "That guard thinks he's one of those British Colonists who came here in the 1800's."

The road into the game lodge is rough, but well worth the effort. The game drives in Samburu are why you travel but the Shaba game lodge is where you'd want to be to relax and recharge. The rooms are spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The cabins, restaurant and lounge are all spread out in a forested area near the park and right next to the river. The grounds are well manicured and offer a wide range of fauna to examine. The restaurant is open air and overlooks the river. you can easily see the crocidiles in the river from the restaurant. The food is fantastic. Meals are buffet and there is surely something to please everyone. The staff was very friendly and attended to every need.

Dear guest,

It was pleasure hosting you. Please accept this late response as it was beyond our control. The three parks located next to each other in this eco system are indeed a gem and unmatched in many ways. A number of positive developments have been undertaken since your last visit and thus a good reason for you to sample Sarova Shaba yet again. Shaba,Bufallo springs and Samburu national parks do provide the most unique experience on the same park fee ticket. We are most encouraged by your positive feedback and we look forward to your earliest return.

I went with a mission to Kenya for two weeks, and we ended our trip at this lodge. The rooms were inexpensive and comfortable, but after the work we had done, anything would have seemed luxurious! The food at the buffet was fantastic, and the staff was so friendly. Also, the pool was breathtaking. One word of warning though... LOCK your doors! There are monkeys all over the resort grounds who know how to open doors, and they will ransack your room if you don't. Also, the game drivers affiliated with this resort were able to find the "big 5" for us, including the elusive cheetah. I would absolutely stay here again.

We spent just the two nights here and there were no real problems.

On arrival the porter found one of the rooms wasn’t made up but instantly had us transferred to better rooms. There were three of us so we had two rooms with a connecting door something I was told wasn’t possible when I booked in the UK.
The rooms are clean with everything you want, tea/coffee and complementary bottled water, a nice touch. For cleaning your teeth I was told.
The front of the rooms looked out over the river where we watched the crocodiles. Baboons and monkeys regularly wander across the grounds kept in check by a guy in local costume. We were told to keep the mess screen across the windows to stop them getting in the rooms and we spend a few pleasant hours watching their antics.
No problems with insects although being next to a river with a stream running through the grounds I expected some.
All the staff very friendly and helpful.
We were on a full board package, the drinks being extra and probably a little more expensive than the rest of the hotels we would stop at but not too bad. Couple of beers and drinks with meals worked out at about £12 a day per head.
There have been a couple a mentions of tipping and the staff ‘hovering’. I never had a problem as I tend to tip at the end of a stay and I had taken a pile of small denomination US dollars to cover this.
