“Relaxing while you are touring New Zealand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

This is a holiday park that is "known" to us, and we gladly returned. The name says it all. A beach holiday park!
Sites are very spacious, and going to the beach is a going to you own backyard.
Staff is extremely helpful with whatever information you might need.
Accommodation is very clean and well equipped, including terrace seats for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Pohara Beach is an ideal location to discover the wonderful area of Golden Beach. OK... you have to get over the (Takaka) Hill, but you will be rewarded with the beauty of the region. And Pohara Beach Top 10 HP gives you all comfort to discover the region at your own pace.
For those who want to give up self-cooking for a few days: there are several resto's just across the street. And there is even a shop & a take away at the premises.
Very great place to stay. Visitors of the South Island: make sure to put this location on your "To Visit" list!
And don't forget to book a trip to the Farewell Spit with Eco Tours in Collingwood - you can't get a better way to visit the spit!

We were visiting with our camper van and wanted a stop over for a couple of nights before going on to Nelson, then Picton and the North Island of NZ. We could not have wanted a better camp nor location, and the staff were invariably cheery and very helpful. The site is large but all the pitches are generously spaced and all facilities are very clean and modern. Situated right by one of the cleanest beaches that I have ever seen, in the Golden Bay itself, you immediately feel at one with nature.

Travelling out of Pohara for a day trip, you can take in the small but enchanting town of Takaka just a few minutes away. The township boasts a range of individual stores all housed within historic buildings dating from the late 1800"s all carefully maintained and a pleasure to see. Look out for the murals on various buildings which delight the eye.

The town's museum had just opened and I must recommend a brief stop there to better understand the real hardships of the pioneers. When you initially drive to Pohara from the eastern or mid sides of the South Island you will find yourself driving over the hairpin bends of the Abel Tasman nature reserve. When you later understand that the pioneers used to refer to this steep piece of land as "The Hill" (which they used to bicycle across), you will have considerable respect for them!

Driving the short distance further (c.25kms) to the end of the drive able start of Farewell Spit you have most enjoyable glimpses of the clean beaches, a large number of Black Swans and many stop off view points.

Driving the other way out of Pohara Beach towards Totaranui you will also have a shorter but still fascinating coastal drive giving you higher views over the bay and several amazing views of the cliff formations that run down to the sea.

Yes, Pohara Beach Top 10 is a super site to visit in a unique position on the top of the South Island.

We stayed for 3 nights in a 2 Bedroom Motel Unit. This was about 20 meters away from the Beach - but right behind the main road (not that much traffic though).

We wanted something a little different in Golden Bay - on a budget but still comfortable and this turned out to be just that.

The double bed was a little to soft for my liking but the two single ones in the other bedroom where ok. The kitchen was fully equipped with full size oven/stove and Fridge/Freezer and all the pots and pans one could have hoped for. The bathroom (shower only) was big enough and everything very clean.

In the Motel Units the beds come with all the linen which is great.

We had a smoker with us so it was great that he could sit outside on the private deck and under cover (as it rained one day).

Pohara is ideally located to explore not just the two National Parks in the area (Abel Tasman and Kahurangi) but also the attractions in the Bay itself.

Room Tip: Spend the extra few $$ and stay in a Motel Unit

We stayed in a kitchen cabin, 2 adults and 4 children Queens Birthday 2012 and it was great. Good spacey clean rooms and great facilities. Kids had a great time on the beach right beside the camp ground even though it was winter!. 3 lovely fun filled days whilst we contested in the local Country Music Awards at Pohara. Great place to stay and would recommend to all families....already booked in for next year......see you then...:)

We stayed here two nights and were impressed with the service and our kitchen cabin. The undercounter hot water tank had a leak and they upgraded us to a large full service unit the second night. Two tips for those who stay in this area - Take the tour of the Te Anaroa Caves - wonderful - better and way less expensive than Waitomo! -Hike to Wharariki Beach for low tide - most artistically beautiful beach in New Zealand.
