“Right by the sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Excellent hotel. Everything is clean, the rooms are spacious (even the bathroom), facilities are all modern and it is right on the west end of the village, overlooking the sea with unobstructed views.

We stayed for 3 nights in one of the rooms at the side overlooking the smaller bay and beach and the 3 Brothers Taverna. The room was superb and very spacious with a very good modern bathroom and the balcony overlooking the cliffs. Sitting watching the goats scampering about on the vertical cliffs was very good therapy after a day spent doing not a lot! Food OK but don't go for the bed and Breakfast option because the breakfast was very meagre. Better to have the option of choosing what you want or trying one of the other many cafes/tavernas. We ate at the 3 Brothers Taverna which was excellent and entertaining. The little beach was 2 minutes from the hotel but the sea was very cold. Only downside is that no one in Crete wants to take a credit card, including our car hire and this hotel. There was a problem in that the 2 cash machines in the village were empty for 3 days so we were panicking a bit about how to pay! They were fairly relaxed about it but we had to forgo dinner on our 3rd evening because we had run out of cash. Luckily they filled it just before we left but after we had paid with some sterling we fortunately had with us. This happens quite a lot apparently so make sure you have what you need before you get there.

Room Tip: Try Room 302 with the beautiful view of cliffs.

A little bit more expensive than the nearby Lefka Ori, but modern and comfortable rooms, huge size and correct breakfast. Room was huge and very clean, nothing to complain and we would definitively return if again at Sfakia. Manager was organising for us a taxi to Anopolis without any problems. Everything in Sfakia is greek lifestyle, so don't be in a hurry and relax - they will take care of all your requests.
The access to the car park of the hotel can be a real adventure for huge cars - maybe worth visiting the narrow access road before you are engaged. Small cars of car locations will enter without a problem.

When I am on the island of Crete, I find it very pleasurable and relaxing to stay at Hotel Xenia, on the harbor on the small village of Chora Sfakion. You can actually walk from one end of the harbor to the other in ten minutes. The hotel has very spacious and clean rooms and there is a lift for people who prefer not to use stairs. A restaurant serves delicious Cretan food all day long and you have a variety of choices for breakfast, including omelets. In the evening, a chef grills meats outside and, if you choose, you may order locally made Cretan wine with your meal. Yorgos, the manager, is multi-lingual and a gracious host. The Xenia has a small but lovely private beach and you can either dive into the sea or use a step ladder. Chora Sfakion is very peaceful because the taverna and hotel owners voted not to play music so that guests are not disturbed. When I sit outside the Hotel Xenia for my evening meal, I hear only the sounds of the waves and the cicadas and it is like a melody. From the hotel's patio, you can see the ferry which takes hikers to and from the magnificent Gorge of Samaria. Hotel Xenia is perfect for couples, families, and those traveling single, as I did. I am a novelist and stayed at Hotel Xenia over a period of five years; it was my base while I traveled to nearby mountain villages to do my research. I traveled alone and felt completely in Hotel Xenia and the entire area.

Comfortably located between beach and harbor Xenia successfully exercise power of it's size in direction of achieving most important predispositions to satisfy modern accommodation demands. Everything is wide enough, rooms are comfortable and very well equipped. Beside AC, TV, fridge, personal safe, wireless internet and other "necessities" of today there's hotel parking, nice restaurant, private access to the sea, beach like terraces and most important - home atmosphere.

George, Vana, Maria & Maria are "standard" dream-team which will be your friends-hosts in the best possible manner. Those people are Xenia's real asset and treasure.

Xenia is growing, truth.. We can all see different opinions about that but that's Xenia's destiny and Xenia's way to the future. Remember the critics from "good old" times? I do remember!

A dust rises behind good horse, that's all.

We must understand that Xenia deserves to be a wealthy place. Watching the today's economic situation and super-friendly prices Xenia keeps in place for it's customers, small enlargement was necessary and very good idea. We like those developments or not, switching point of view to the owner's spot would be fair too. Xenia is way too beautiful to be affected by those several rooms it has - more.. If the quality stays as it is, nothing can be lost.

Xenia is a must for visitors to Hora Sfakion.

Room Tip: Every room is good, depends how many you are and what you want. Best way is to talk to George and as...

My wife and I have stayed at the Xenia pretty regularly - usually twice a year, for the last fifteen years. Despite the owner's ugly extensions to the original building, the essential welcoming nature of the place has not been destroyed.

The reason for this is simple: Giorgo Lykoiannakis, the manager, and his partner Vana make sure that everyone is welcome and cared for. The team that surrounds them is minuscule: but standards are extremely high: Maria from Anolopolis and Maria from Vouvas have the highest standards of housekeeping and take a pride in keeping the place immaculately clean.
The addition of the taverna has been a great additional success: it is a place where you can be sure that the food is fresh and is of high quality and well cooked.

Over the years the hotel has been enlarged but is still small - though a recent photo seems to show that the owner (Giorgo is the manager, not the owner) is putting further additions on the harbour -facing rooms of the hotel.

If Giorgo Lykoiannakis ceased to manage the hotel I know that we would think seriously about holidaying elsewhere since the success of a hotel lies not in its physical entity but in the whole ambience. For the time being though, I would recommend this hotel without reservation - it is scarcely surprising that so very many of the guests come back time and time again! At times the taverna can resemble a muti-national house-party of folk who have got to know each other over several years - but there is mercifully no cliqueishness.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the sea - some to the dramatic sunset in the west, some out over the south over t...
