With a spare week in October and cheap flights from Stansted, I took off for Vritomartis resort on Crete and had one of my best relaxing vacations EVER. The resort complex at Vritomartis is excellent with great rooms, food, staff, pool, beach (rocky and rugged), gardens ... in fact nothing to criticise in the whole experience.
It is not at the centre of the universe, so don't go for nightlife or city buzz ... 90 minutes over the mountains from the airport at Chania (take the local bus from Chania town if timing works - it's cheap, reliable and high quality). If you want to move around, hire a car, but if you just want to chill, you don't need one, and the resort organises a lot of trips in the local area which are very reasonably priced.
Some great escorted walks as this is an area of exceptional rugged beauty - the best I did was Aradena Gorge (reasonable fitness and walking shoes required) but Imbros Gorge was easier and a good "taster". October weather was perfect for both activity and sunning the buns - sunny and 23C every day!
You can also walk around 20 minutes to the local port (Chora Sfakion) where there are bars, shops and restaurants, and boats along the coast ... and the resort organises regular shuttles to get you back up the hill (or there AND back if you're feeling lazy)
Guests are from all over Europe, with a high proportion of Dutch, and were sociable and participated in various activities (boules, shuffleboard ...). If you have never tried naturism, this is a great place to try as everyone is so relaxed ... you won't even notice that the little useless pieces of expensive cloth aren't there!
Staff were great and really worked together as a team to make for a perfect stay.
