“Second time and not disappointed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

This was our second visit to Vritomartis and once again we had a wonderful time. Met some old friends from our first visit and made some new ones this time round. What can we say that has not already been said, friendly warm and helpful staff who go out of their way to ensure that everything is perfect. A special mention for Georgia, Marsha, Babis, Mohammed and Ahmed (soon to be a father).
Last year the boat trip we booked was cancelled on 2 occasions, but this year we made it. We did the east coast beach trip with lunch in Lautro and would recommend this. We were so impressed with Lautro that we booked a second trip for dinner in Lautro and again were not disappointed.
Hopefully we will be able to return to the paradise that is Vritomartis next year.

Room Tip: We like the mountain view rooms as on one side you can sit on the balcony and enjoy the wonderful su...

This was our second visit to Vritomartis and prehaps because we knew what to expect enjoyed it more than the previous visit. We stayed in a superior bungalow and had the most southerly room on the complex with a great view of the sea and Gavdos Island when it wasn't shrouded in mist.
The new activities organiser, French lass Jeannne was excellent drumming up participation for a range of activities. The highlight was a late night traditional Greek dance which involved the audience and was one of the most memorable evenings in our whole Crete trip. We also took part in a water polo game which was hilarious and the aquagym.
Breakfast was OK - pity it couldn't be outside. Dinner on the terrace was excellent.
We had hoped to go on the west coast boat trip but it was cancelled due to lack of numbers.Whether this is due to it being (imo) too pricey at 61E I don't know.
Minor gripe would be for a wider range of food at the Filaki Beach taverna and for the barman to be less grumpy - maybe he was having an off day?
Staff were as previously excellent - friendly and work very hard. In particular the young lady at reception and local lass Georgina.
Four out of five last time, five this time.
We will return.

Booking: We booked direct with the hotel using the online tool and confirming by email. We found this a simple and efficient process. About half of the other UK guests had booked through an agency, preferring to have the convenience of a complete package. We did notice that when the hotel got busy, several guests had to move between different types of rooms during their stay and this did not always seem to have been clearly communicated in advance when booked through an agent.
Getting there: We flew to Heraklion and hired a car for 2 weeks. Chania airport is about 45 minutes closer but there tends to be more flexibility in flights to/from Heraklion. The drive from Heraklion is quite straight forward, the only part that needs a bit of extra concentration is the junction from the National Road (east to west) to the north to south road at Vrises. The junction is not very clear and is easy to miss. Tip: take a note of the car mileage as you pass Rethymnon. The distance from the western Rethymnon junction (the road changes from duel to single carriageway at this point) is 22.5 km. There is no slip road at Vrises, just a sharp right hand junction. After about 100 metres turn left at the T junction then take the second road on the left signposted for Sfakia. I recommend getting at least a class c car (1.3-1.4 lt engine). If you are on a tight budget I am sure that a smaller car would be OK but the extra power is useful on the hills. It can cost 3 Euros to park at Hora Sfakion but if you tell the attendant that you are staying at Vritomartis you will be allowed to park for free.
Hotel: To focus on the naturist aspects detracts from the fact that this is primarily a very good, medium sized hotel. Good quality accommodation, good food and helpful staff. Dyed-in-the-wool nudists might find it frustrating to have to put a little clothing on in the hotel but it seems to suite most people. The guests range from first timers to those who are paid-up members of naturist clubs. If you are unsure about taking your clothes off, this would be a great place to start. Unless you intend to swim in the pool or the hotel beach, you would be able to enjoy your stay here whilst wearing a sarong or something similar and probably no one would ever notice (very few people are nude all the time). However, I guarantee that you would soon feel so relaxed that you will be wearing no more than flipflops and sunglasses.
The hotel WIFI is only reliable in the reception area but you can borrow a cable to connect in your room. This tends to lead to a display of laptop and smart phone activity in the restaurant and lobby , especially over breakfast. It would be better if the wireless was available in the rooms.
Activities: There is a welcome meeting on your first evening where all the activities and excursions are explained. The meeting and the activities are a great way to socialise with other guests if that is what you want. I suggest that you at least try some of the activities early in your holiday. Irini, the previous animation organiser was great. Jeanne, the current organiser is just as good and really helped to make our holiday.
The other reviewers have accurately captured this hotel. A very relaxing environment, a great team of staff and a lovely location.

Room Tip: Rooms in the hotel are more convenient for the restaurant but can get noise from the bar. Some mount...

Well this was only my second naturalist holiday on my own and the first at a larger hotel. I needn't of had any concerns. From the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out, I was spoilt. The staff really do make you feel welcome, like visiting family or long lost friends. The earth moved for me within hours of arriving, unfortunately it was only a small earthquake, a bit of extra entertainment. The accommodation was spotless and maintained that way. Plenty of variety with the food both at breakfast and dinner. The Pool and Poolside bar are both excellent with plenty of room around to catch a few rays. Managed to make a fool of myself both at Volleyball and Greek dancing but hey ho I was on holiday and I'm allowed to. Plenty of other activities organised for your pleasure or not, you decide. Also many excursions if you want to keep busy. Would I go back? I wouldn't have left if I didn't have to. Can't imagine Paradise being much better.

If you read the other reviews you will get a good impression of Vritomartis. This isn't a 4* hotel as some have expected, and it may be a little dated, but is meticulously cleaned and maintained. Every room has wired internet and some do have a (slow) WiFi (so if you have laptop bring a decent length of Ethernet/RJ45 patch cable minimum 3 mtrs). The hotel room's mattresses are exceptionally hard, and if you're on the "bony" side you may find them too hard. The bungalows have perfect mattresses! All but a couple of the rooms/bungalows are twin bedded (which is typical for Europe). Yes the food is a little on the budget side, but if you go for the salad and Greek dishes, you will not be disappointed.

It was slightly annoying that you had to be covered in the hotel, but, it didn't spoil the experience. We were told that the it was a requirement under the operating licence (which did sound plausible).

As a location Chora Sfakion is truly in the middle of nowhere, and is not good for exploring the island of Crete (only one mountain road from the North coast). There are enough excursions to keep boredom at bay, but some are a little pricey. Fundamentally, this is a chill-out location.
We hired a car, but I wouldn't bother if we go again. Taxi transfers are good (usually Mercedes) and as the road is quite challenging and the driver gets no opportunity to see the amazing countryside!

My wife and I are around 50 and it was a nice to be one of the youngest; but we were there at the end of the season, which is a likely explanation!

We have stayed and countless naturist resorts and camp sites and Vritomartis stands out from them due to the friendliness of the staff. Nothing is too much for them. Other places may have better beds or food etc., but not one of them have come close to Vritomartis for service.

So in conclusion, if you want a relaxing holiday with naturist facilities, Vritomartis should on your short list!

Room Tip: Go for a bungalow as it is well worth it (mattresses are much better).

This was our fifth holiday at Vritomartis and yet again it was perfect. The hotel is secluded in a great location with mountains one side and the sea on the other side. The staff are friendly and helpful and most of them have been there for a long time. We stay in the Bungalows which are comfortable and very clean. The breakfast and dinner is a buffet with plenty of choices. There is a large pool and a children's pool which you see being cleaned every morning. We use the beach which is a 10-15 minute's walk or the hotel does a free bus service. There is a taverna where you can get a lunch time snack and a drink. There are sunbeds and umbrellas which you do have to pay for. This really is a great hotel where you can relax and we highly recommend it.

A nice small family hotel were you can enjoy a decent naturist holiday as it should be. Only inside the hotel nudisme is not allowed. The rooms are small and basic. Breakfast and diner is in buffet and of a good quality. Sufficient variety. The hotel has a large pool with excellent water quality. Appr. 700 mts to walk to a nearby naturist beach. Sunbeds at the beach are at an extra cost. The hotel has no sunbed/beach towels. There is a bus shuttle to the beach and a nearby town, but quite irregular. For a real Greec lunch we advice to enjoy this in the nearby village
