“Hospitality at its best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Our vehicle broke down just outside of the little town called Kestell and the first sign we saw was "Karma Bacakpackers". With a warm and friendly welcome from the host, Vera Ann, we felt right at home. Clean, comfortable and amazingly tranquil. Not only do you have plenty of activities to do in the area, but you get to taste the best home made jams in South Africa. Thank you for the stay and we will definitley see you again. Highly recommended!

We came to sleep and go hiking and stayed because of the lovely owner, her extraordinary jam and the cosy and friendly lodge. The hostel is not far from the Royal Natal National Park and a good base to start a day hike to the Amphitheatre. One of the best backpackers I've been to!

We left Karma a few days ago and it feels like leaving a lifelong friend. We visited Karma with our two boisterous children aged 8 and 4 having trawled through trip advisor and every other internet review site to find the best within our budget. This place and Vera Ann ticked all the boxes and more. The place a beautiful and tranquil oasis. The area really accessible to the Northern Drakensberg and last but not least Vera Ann incredibly welcoming and a pleasure to chat with I felt instantly at ease (I hope not too much!). I would have quite happily spent my whole holiday there. We had a room for 4 and were welcome to use just about any other area of the house and garden. We went on a walk in the mountains and on the second day Vera Ann booked a tour in Lesotho for us. This although we were of course tourists didn't feel put on too much for us. Karma would have also been great for Golden Gate although we didn't get time to visit there. Should we return to South Africa we will be back in a shot.

We had a wonderful time at Karma Backpackers! Vera, the owner, takes care of everyone just as though they are family. Her jams are delicious and she has almost 40 varieties to choose from, they are worth the price! You can enjoy fresh Organic veggies from her garden for a small fee, they were yummy. Stop by and enjoy her garden and outside seating area to relax and chat with other South African visitors.

Vera Anne is so welcoming and warm you won't want to leave. This is our second time here and we will come back for sure when we next in South Africa. Lovely fire place, hotwater bottles to keep you warm at night! And the Jam (now award winning!!) is homemade and delicious! You have to try it when you stay. All the information you need for treks etc is all here. Plus 2 lovely and friendly dogs to keep you company. It's a must stay if your coming to this area! Thank you Vera Anne for another lovely stay.

Vera Anne and her husband manage more than a backpackers. It feels like you are an intimate guest of theirs. We drove from here to Sentinel Peak both days, and wouldn't stay anywhere else while going for day hikes around the Ampitheatre of Royal Natal. Vera had all the maps for getting to trail heads and great suggestions for where to go. The house is warm and cozy. Literally, as the temp outside was near freezing, they kept a fire in the stove and put hot water bottles in the beds for us. The large, equipped kitchen was great for making our own meals. But plan on having Vera's breakfast for the delight of trying several of her dozens of jam flavors. You won't leave without one.
