“Defiantly Still Standing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2012

This fortification and administrative centre was in its day known both as the "Queen of Border Fortresses" and "the most dangerous place in England" and a visit to this free site attests to these two titles. Despite being in ruin, there is still a real majesty about Norham and it's remarkably in tact, which is appreciated the more you venture inside. The height and extrapolated from that, the now gone scale of the castle is truly impressive - Norham is more a defiantly still-standing part shell rather than just a ruin of a castle and it doesn't take too much imagination to visualise what it would have looked like. The history of the place gives you a sense of its hazardous past, besieged 9 times, resisting its attackers 5 times before eventually falling to the new innovation of artillery. The interpretation boards give a real insight into what Norham was about, a real place of power and projection.
