“Relaxing stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2014

Really liked this hotel, there is plenty to like about it. Our classic room was well appointed and clean but very warm at night unless the windows were wide open. The air conditioning didn't seem to be particularly effective. Also the walls were quite thin so we could hear a lot of what was going on next door. If we came again we would probably upgrade to a room with a terrace.

Its definitely worth dining in at least once, the open lasagne with pecorino and truffles is sublime! Also a great wine list and helpful sommelier. When we visited at the end of May it wasn't yet warm enough for dining alfresco which was rather disappointing. The inside dining area gets very busy and the tables are quite close together on occasion but this did not detract from our experience. The waiting staff were excellent and they were clearly passionate about the food. The breakfast was a bit of a let down, it would have been fantastic if they could have had some home made bread instead of the sliced bread and standard part baked rolls, however, the home baked pastries and cakes were excellent. Also it is very much self service and you can end not having enough hands to carry your hot drinks and plates of food, fruit juice etc to your table. Personally I think it would be greatly improved by having cups and saucers on the tables and the waiting staff bringing hot drinks to the table.

There are plenty of walks you can do from the doorstep which is great if you get fed up of sitting around the pool! We wanted to leave a tip but they didn't have change of a 50 Euro note as they don't keep any cash on site and prefer payments to be made by card, we even had to buy our excellent 10 euro souvenir bottle of their olive oil by card! All in all, a really nice place to spend a few days.

We stayed at Villa Monte Solare for four nights during the first week of June. The hotel is a resort hotel located in a beautiful area of Unbria, near Tavernelle di Panicale (PG) and about a 25 minute drive from Perugia. It is very centrally located, but is itself isolated on the top of a hill looking down over gorgeous Umbrian countryside. The hotel is very luxurious – we had a family suite (sleeps 4) and a double room to accommodate our group of five people. Our rooms were in a separate building, about a three minute walk from the main reception building where breakfast is served. Breakfasts were included in our price, and were very good, with a selection of local meats, cheeses, pastries and eggs and bacon. My daughters used the spa facility for a massage. There are also two swimming pools. Alessio at the front desk was our main source of directions and advice on where to go in the area, and all of his suggestions were great. Jennifer was also a great help. We went to Florence for a day (about an hour and a half drive), and spent another day driving through many of the beautiful and picturesque small towns in the area – all within a half hour or so of the hotel. Panicale was a particularly nice village to spend half a day walking around. We were aware that the hotel restaurant had a great reputation, but we did not try it – we sought out local restaurants in the surrounding towns, so we cannot comment on the restaurant quality for dinners.

This was our first of many stops in Tuscany. We arrived late and weren't expecting much from the restaurant. Boy were we blown away! Truly sublime meals the 2 nights we were there. And the olive oil (bottled on site) is superb. (We took home a bottle).
This is perfect for those looking for a more rustic get-away. Some facilities could use some freshening up (a bit aged).
The only real negative - holiday inn/airport style breakfast. Very non-immaginative and uninspiring.
Room for improvement: not mentioning our 10 year wedding anniversary
Suggestion: ask if your room has a bathtub or not. Ours didn't (and our shower was miniscule)...surprising for a location people go to for relaxation and romance..

Returned to VdiMS after 18 months. In the intervening period, as mentioned in other posts, Fillipe and Rosi have sold up but it is still just as good a place to stay. That is probably down to the fact that many of the staff remain the same. Maybe over time it might change if the staff do. Perhaps the commercial side will take over a bit more and there will be less evidence of the labour of love that it appeared to be under Fillipe and Rosi. Did miss the fact that there wasn't anyone to give Fillipe's guided tour and history of the estate though. Still a great place to go but maybe go sooner rather than later just in case things change. Couldn't fault the facilities, breakfast, dinner or staff.

We just spent four wonderful nights at the Villa Monte Solare, a magical place in Umbria. My husband and I are avid travelers and we were totally impressed by this establishment.
We had booked a superior room which was on the 2nd floor with spectacular views of the surrounding area. The room was spotlessly clean, with a lovely seating area, wonderful bed, antique furniture and a great bathroom.
We had dinner once at the Dolium, the hotel’s restaurant with delicious Italian cuisine, in an elegant ambience and a wonderful service. Breakfast was equally superb with a variety of local sweets, fresh croissants as well as local cheeses and local prosciutto. An of course Italian coffee to order!
The staff is extremely professional and this is our chance to say thanks to Jennifer for such a warm welcome, Alessio for his wonderful suggestions on the local villages, and the sommelier lady (I am sorry for not getting her name) for the wonderful wine suggestions. Twice we took lovely walks around the hotel amidst olive groves trying to absorb the breathtaking views of the nearby area.
The location of the villa is very convenient for exploring Umbria, as well as Southern Tuscany. It is highly recommended.

Set in the midst of an old olive grove is an old and charming inn called the Villa de Monte Solare. My wife and I are from New York and we usually stay in Relais and Chateaux when traveling in Europe. We are in Rome for a few months and we are taking trips outside of the city from time to time, and we wanted to spend a few days in Umbria . The Villa di Monte Solare seemed to be the perfect place. The staff (especially Jennifer) could not have been nicer, more pleasant or more helpful. The grounds surrounding the hotel are exquisite and my wife said that the spa was much better than she expected for a hotel of this size. We opted for a suite and the two rooms were large and furnished nicely. The linens and towels were very nice and all of the accessories that one would and should expect were available. This hotel was a very good choice and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wanted to spend time in Umbria.

But we stayed at the hotel in the middle of March. The weather was very pleasant although the nights certainly had a chill in the air. Because this is before Umbria becomes a major tourist attraction, driving through streets that were not crowded or congested was nice. Going to the hill towns of Panicale and Cortona was a joy because they were free of tourist busses and hoards of people. It was amazing to enjoy all of Umbria during the time we were there.

However there was a downside to staying at Villa di Monte Solare in the "off season". After arriving at our hotel we quickly realized that there was only one other couple staying at the hotel. While the peace and quiet was very nice, we also felt weird having diner at the hotel's restaurant by ourselves. I should mention that the restaurant is very pretty and for the two nights that we ate there, there was a good fire crackling in the fireplace which took the evening chill out of the air. The menu offered a few different choices for dinner including a meat, fish and pasta selections. The service was outstanding (but we were the only diners in the whole room) and the food was very, very good. But eating by ourself in a restaurant is strange feeling. The second evening there were two other tables where people were dining and we felt better. The same thing can be said for the breakfast. The hotel put out an expansive breakfast of pastries, cakes, cereals, meats, cheeses, eggs, bacon, fruit and yogurts for just us. It was certainly a very nice gesture for the hotel, but it was strange to see enough food displayed for dozens of people when we were the only ones there. I guess this says a lot for how the Villa di Monte Solare treats their guests. Maybe it is just the way my wife and I felt about being one of just a few customers, but I would be remiss if I did not mention it. Clearly these are personal feelings and not ones that had anything to do with the professionalism we encountered at this fine small hotel

The quaint resort is everything Italy, Umbria region promises! This resort is set back, away from the nuances of road noise and city life. Up a winding road to an area that overlooks the valleys both front and back of the properties. There is the main house that has the breakfast room, dining room, front desk and about (maybe) 6-8 suites with general sitting rooms upstairs. You may choose a group of four rooms that are a stones throw away that offer seclusion in their own way.

We elected the suites away from the main quarters. Very quaint, full of character, yet with modern amenities. The bathroom is quite spacious with radiant heated floors. Not so modern that you feel like you're in an ordinary hotel in any city. Not at all! Beds, linens, cleanliness, furniture, sitting area.....all lovely. The wall facing the outside are floor-to-ceiling encasement windows that overlook your own patio lined with vines and fruit trees. Absolutely delightful. The 4 suites are have a vine-covered, pea gravel walk way to each patio. Once sitting in your cafe table and chairs, you can overlook the fabulous valley having your afternoon wine and cheese. (Small fridge in room for salame and cheese). You do NOT hear your neighbors unless they are outside walking/talking which we never did.

Please stay here. Great spot to use as base for day trips. Near Lake Trasemeno also. Front desk VERY helpful with day trip suggestions, routes, making dinner reservations in other towns. Quite knowledgable and English speaking.

Dining room food delicious. Ate there the first night as we then ventured out every lunch and dinner in other towns. Food was delicious and I rate it highly however I was itching to start my trip.

Will absolutely go back there if in Umbria region. The grounds are deceiving. Follow all the trails and feel yourself escape and also secluded with nature's best. Very chic!

Unfortunately did not try the spa which we regret but time was short!

Go! Try! Experience! SUPERB!

Room Tip: I loved the detached suites best! Grounds are enveloping and secluded. Romantic. Private. Fully...
