“The perfect home for meeting and exploring the real Ireland.”

Our family of four spent just over two weeks at Carrigmore Farm. We were nervous about our first overseas trip and the fact that we were planning everything ourselves instead of taking a packaged tour. Tom and Tina Cummins quickly set our minds at ease and proved to be the friendliest, most generous hosts we have ever met.

The farmhouse itself is charming, and contains everything you might need during your stay. It is very comfortabl, and it is obvious that the Cummins work very hard at ensuring their guests enjoyment. We were greeted by Tom as soon as we arrived and were given a tour that showed “a place for everything and everything in its place.” A supply of breakfast items and welcome treats allowed us to relax and not worry over rushing to a store as soon as we arrived. The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked with tea, spices, cookware and necessities, and the bathroom is updated nicely. The furniture is comfortable to use, the Wi-Fi is very good and the collection of hundreds of DVDs was a lot of fun.

Don't, however, expect a completely modernized little cottage. This house was built centuries ago and retains the charm of the past. There is no dishwasher, but the camaraderie and conversations that occurred while washing dishes lent an aura of simplicity and peace to our stay. Likewise, instead of using the clothes dryer, we found much more enjoyment in hanging the clothes on the line to dry in the sun. It’s a rare home that can interest two teens and tear them away from electronic devices, but Carrigmore Farm managed to do that. Don’t get me wrong – they spent a share of their evenings taking advantage of the Wi-Fi, but my daughter enjoyed helping cook and clean up simple meals and my son voluntarily took on laundry duty. The house is on a working farm, you will have cows for neighbors and constant peace.

Carrigmore is ideally situated for exploring all corners of Ireland, but you do want to make sure you have a car available. We saw everything we wanted to see – and even some things we didn’t know we wanted to see! – within a couple hours’ drive in any direction. We didn’t need to pay for lodging anywhere else, we always had plenty of time to explore and return by nightfall. The best part of our stay, however, was the effort Tom and Tina put in to introducing us to the real Ireland, not just the tourist destinations. With them as our guides, we were welcomed at the most amazing traditional music sessions, fell hard for hurling (Go Doon!), discovered the serenity of an evening walk on abbey grounds, watched peat harvesting, enjoyed sharing rounds at friendly pubs and were blessed to meet the kind-hearted, generous people of Counties Limerick and Tipperary. Tom is willing to leave you to your own devices, but it would be a crime to pass up the offer of a visit to Jim of the Mills’s on a Thursday night, or any of the other suggestions he makes. We would have enjoyed our visit regardless, but our favorite memories are the interactions with the people Tom introduced us to. It takes special people to make visitors feel like friends; Tom and Tina are obviously very special. We have already recommended a visit to Carrigmore Farm to friends and family, and will continue to do so.
