GRAN CLUB SANTA LUCIA – Santa Lucia (Camaguey) Cuba
March 20 to March 27 2013
Butler Family and Friends Vacation
The bus ride was 90 minutes from the airport, so make sure you get a drink from the vendors.
Water was 3 fro $5.00 and beer 2 for $5.00. they do take Canadian at the airport.
Use the washroom at the airport. The bus has a washroom but it was not useable. It needed cleaning.
Our hotel had 3 full buses and we were on bus 2. So as you can image the lobby was very full. The staff was friendly and they put on a little show for us and had cold punch waiting for us. Non- alcoholic and there were children. The main lobby bar was right there if you wanted something else.
There were only 2 staff checking everyone in, we had to show passports and fill out a form. The process was slow and I did mention that this needs to be addressed. A lot of people went to grab something to eat as the restaurant was open until 11pm for us.
Our room was very nice and spacious. We were in block 300 in a junior suite, which is very close to the beach and a little walk back to the lobby, pool area and main buffet restaurant. This was fine with us as it was a very quite area. Next visit I will ask to be in Block 200 as it is closer to the main action and still close to the beach.
When booking into this resort I do recommend that you do spend the extra as the Jr. Suites had a living room, with a sofa that is also a single bed and 2 other comfy chairs. A wall divides the bedroom and bathroom from the living room. You can have a king bed or 2 full double beds. Nice large bath with shower only. The outlets are 110v and 220v for this room category so you do not need an adaptor for your charges or flat irons. These rooms do have hairdryers.
You can sleep 2 adults and 3 children in the room.
The Standard rooms are on the opposite side of the main building from the beach and pool area. It is a good 5 min walk to beach and 3 or 4 to activities.
These rooms are small, need updating. Good for single travellers and young couples who want to save money.
You will need adaptors for your charges or flat irons.
I must say that the staff at the Gran Club are one of the best I have come across and I have been to many resorts.
If they had not met you, they would come up and introduce themselves ask your name, where you are from, if you have been to Cuba before. Very friendly and they all seem very interested in getting to know you.
The Activity staff sure knows how to make your time pleasant and get tons of people involved in all the fun games, with out being pushy. We had a dart competition, ring toss everyday. Each day more and more people got involved as they could see how much fun we were having.
The kids also had a great time. Bon Bon (of course not her real name) is in charge of the kids club. She is amazing. She always had tons of kids following her around all day, laughing and playing games. Even my 13 year old hung out with her sometimes.
The Spanish lessons each day were not just learning new words; we actually had a history lesson each day in a fun way. Lots of laughing.
The bar staff was always helpful and as fast as could be. Most times only one person on at a time, which meant waiting, especially at the pool bar. They need at least 2 people working during the day.
The restaurant staff was very nice and always made sure we had drinks during lunch and dinner. Breakfast you were on your own for drinks, but if you needed something they did go out of their way to look for your request.
The beach was white sand, the water was shallow and warm, however, I do recommend that everyone wear
water shoes, due to small broken shells and little rocks. You can walk for a long time on the beach and have access to all 4 resorts in the area. If you are out for a nice long walk on the beach, you are allowed to stop in at a resort and have a cool drink in there bar and wander around their resort. This is a nice touch.
There was a good variety of food; everyone could always find something to eat. Yes Cuban food is bland in most cases so it is not gourmet 5 star food. The grill always had fresh fish (cooked the way you prefer), chicken, and pork.
Beef stew one night was very good. We even had turkey and Ham night which was excellent.
Everyday at lunch and dinner, you could go to the pasta bar and the sauces were good.
The grill near the pool was open for lunch; approx. 11am to 3pm then reopens around 11pm. They serve great Hamburg’s. The Hot dogs were not very good. We also liked the fries.
The Cuban A la Carte was ok. The lemon fish was very good.
My friends tried the Italian and did not enjoy it.
We did go to a Local Fishermen’s house for dinner. They had turned their house into a little restaurant and usually have 25 people per day over lunch and dinner.
They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to the beach, pick you up, take you to the house serve you lunch or dinner and then return you to your hotel all for $15.00 pesos per person.
They live right near Coco beach which is approx 6 km from your hotel, so you can spend the day at the beach or just go for the most amazing Lobster dinner, or chicken.
I do recommend that if you like being on the water, take the Playa Bonita Catamaran tour. This is a full day, you are picked up at the hotel around 9:30 am and you are back around 4pm.
If you can take an underwater camera it is advisable. The Snorkelling at the Coral Reef is amazing.
The lunch at the beach is either Seafood or chicken (it was tough).
The only downfall to this tour is the washroom is very dirty and nobody would use it.
The beach was soft sand and the water was shallow and warm.
I miss all my new Cuban Friends, Yurani (public relations) , Miritha (Sunwing Rep)
Betty, Danni, Jorge, Tiko , and of course Bon Bon ( Activity Staff).
I will be recommending Gran Club Santa Lucia to all my clients. The hotel is very clean, well managed (with a new manager).
The New manager is all ready starting to paint and address all the issues I had mentioned above.
This resort is even going to be better when I return next year with a group of my clients and friends.

Always book into a Junior Suite. These rooms are on the same side as the beach, pool, restaurants...
