“Luxury boutique hotel concept taken to the clouds!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2011

Well what can I say……………. Luxury boutique hotel concept taken to the clouds! I stayed at this absolutely stunning concept hotel for only one night and, as the manager himself pointed out, one needs more time to let oneself sink into the rhythm of the tranquil decadence that permeates this place. From the exquisitely detailed bungalows to the almost Olympic size pool, the place is just perfectly designed. The food is quite good (I think the asparagus soup though was from a can) and the people are just amazing accommodating. For an example I did complain about the soup and suggested a soup made from a local herb and guess what they served for the next meal?
If I was to complain I would say that the staff can be over bearing (but this could be just my sensitivity) and as a Sri Lankan feel that the theme may be somewhat contrived.

Room Tip: I d say all of them are great

Impeccable attention to detail. Loved everything about the place from the chalets to the service. Wished we could have stayed longer.

We were supposed to be staying in Bentota for the whole duration of our holiday, but decided to check out of the beach hotel early to explore the island more. We're really glad that we did, otherwise we wouldn't have come across Ulagalla Resort. In total we stayed at 5 hotels/resorts on the island and we really think that you won't find a better place to stay than Ulagalla Resort. The manager here has really got everything spot on - you won't find better service elsewhere in Sri Lanka!

We were made to feel very welcome immediately on arrival and all staff were great with our two small children. The service experienced was superior to any other hotel we stayed at in Sri Lanka (by far......).

The hotel is situated in a great location for visiting the ancient cities Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Sigiriya and various wildlife parks nearby.

Fantastic accomodation with modern gadgets, a separate lounge, plunge pool, private terrace, large bedroom and a huge modern bathroom, all set in quiet and peaceful grounds where you can observe birds, monkeys and other wildlife. The hotel is eco-friendly and grows many of it's own vegetables and rice too.

The Spa is amazing and situated in a lovely tranquil setting. Food is also superb and very reasonably priced for such a luxurious resort.

We have already recommended Ulagalla Resort to some friends and wouldn't hesitate to go back there again should we visit Sri Lanka in the future.

A wonderful, relaxing, rejuvenating place to stay. The hotel was suggested to us as a good place to base ourselves whilst visiting the sites in the cultural triangle in Sri Lanka. Frankly I would go back just to experience the tranquility and second-to-none service that the hotel provides. You are made to feel welcome from the moment you arrive and nothing is too much trouble. We had a wonderful room with gorgeous bedroom, separate living area, own private plunge pool and an additional 'tree house' from which to enjoy a post dinner drink and gaze at the stars. Recommend Ulagalla without hesitation.

Room Tip: The hotel is spread out over 54 acres .. so some of the rooms can be quite far from the main buildin...

Traveling to this hotel, we had somewhat mixed expectations - but to our surprise we found it to be really great! It is situated on a beautiful piece of land more or less in the middle of nowhere, but in a good location to visit Anuradhapura, Minneriya NP, and Sigiriya. The old main house is beautifully renovated and overlooks a large pool. The grounds are quite expansive so that you have to bike to your room (or they'll take you by buggy). The rooms are large suites. Most of them have a lot of privacy and overlook rice fields. Our room had it's own pool and a little terrace. The web site does not do this property justice.

Everything is very well maintained and the service was very friendly and professional. Not quite at the level of a Four Seasons, but we definitely felt well treated.

My one concern about this place would be that they're extremely ambitious: They have their own solar plant and bio-gas generator. They keep horses on the premises for people to ride. The rooms are filled with electronics to control lights and the like. The whole thing is LEED certified. All that is great, but I wonder whether they'll be able to maintain it over the years.

...but for now this place gets an "excellent" rating. We had a great time there.

This new hotel has got absolutely everything going for it, it's set out around a gorgeous paddy field with every villa in a secluded quiet spot. The staff were extremely welcoming and were able to meet all your needs at request. We stayed in the Nikawewa Villa which has its own private pool, 2 bedrooms and lounge, and it was incredible, this would be a great place for families to stay. There are also lots of great activities on offer such as archery and horse riding, although from our experience i recommend only doing the horse riding if you are a fairly experienced rider or let someone hold and guide the horse for you! We would definitely go back to Ulagalla Resort, as it was we were so well looked after!
