“Disappointing Rodwell House”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2008

After our staying at Sea Point, our family moved to Rodwell House looking for a great sea view, quiet and top-of-the-line service (we paid solid 5-star rates). We were not disappointed with the beautiful views we had from the communal balcony and sea-side suite, but Rodwell is not exactly located in a calm area. The constant noise from the railway station, the public tidal-pool, and busy street right in front of Rodwell is a presence from early morning. However, service was the greatest disappointment. The reception at Rodwell was dry: no friendliness, no refreshments, no tour/explanation of the venue. Dinner was mundane, served in a plain table (not even table-clothed) in an equally unadorned backroom (not in the nice dinner area we saw on the brochure, which seems to be used for private parties and not hotel guests). Breakfast was meagre (fruit, bread, jams, and egg, sausage and bacon upon request). All meals were served by a very inexperienced staff. The rooms were efficient but lacking in charm. The pool area is beautiful, but we had to be persistent in getting serviced there (pillow for the chairs, towels, drinks). Unfortunately for us, our staying at Rodwell House this past January 2008 was a disappointment.

Rodwell House was our first stop on our honeymoon and what a fantastic stop it was! We could have stayed for weeks. The location isn't in Cape Town itself but that's why it appealed to us. It's a stunning house set on the hillside, overlooking the bay and just a short drive from so many Cape attractions. The view from our balcony was beautiful and although we had just missed the whales by a couple of weeks, you can actualy whale watch from the hotel.

The service and atmosphere could not be faulted. The decor is beautifly executed, with great attention to detial. We felt very at home at Rodwell and nothing was ever too much trouble. There are only a handful of rooms and it's very relaxed - exactly what we wanted.

We were given many fantastic recommendations for places to eat and visit - all of which we want to return to. One night we took part in an in-house food and wine pairing evening and had a great time learning more about wines and sampling a whole range of hand picked wines from the private cellar. We were looked after superbly by their chef also - perfect!

Art, food and wine seem to be the passions at Rodwell and we loved all of them. With a private cellar and art gallery on site it really is an inspired place to stay. We shall definitely revisit and strongly recommend to freinds and family.

We spent 3 fantastic nights at this lovely hotel and can't recommend it highly enough.
From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you are made to feel special.
The hotel itself is an oasis of peace and tranquility, furnished stylishly throughout. Our room had a lovely view over the garden area and pool and more importantly the ocean.
Robin, the owner and his assistant, Joanne make every effort to ease you into your stay without being intrusive. The staff are all wonderful too.
A delicious breakfast was served on the terrace each morning.
The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding areas, with Cape Town and Stellenbosch about 30 - 40 mins away and Hermanus (Whale watching) within an hour and a half.
There are a number of restaurants within walking distance, we tried the Harbour House in Kalk Bay (good food, great location, avarage service), Cape to Cuba (great decor, all of which is for sale!, average food) and Aromatic Fog (literally next to the hotel and very pleasant)
Our only slight disappointment was that dinner was not available in the hotel during our stay.
There is a railway line that runs along the coast in front of the hotel but this did not cause us any bother.
We will definately return if we find ourselves in that part of the world !

What a wonderful hotel. Located next to the beach in pretty St James, with beautiful views of the sea and the colourful beach huts, this elegantly styled hotel made the perfect retreat. We loved everything about it. Our room was spacious and very chic, with luxurious bathrooms and lovely furnishings.

When we arrived we were instantly upgraded and even though our original room, with a nice terrace on the mountainside, would have been delightful, the move to the St. James' with a view of the beach was just great.

The whole place had a tranquil, welcoming feel and we were really able to relax and make the place our own.

Joanne and all the staff made us feel very welcome, and helped us out with everything from laundry, to days out to breakfast on the sunny terrace. It felt like they couldn't do enough for us

Back soon we hope!

We have just spent one glorious week at Rodwell House - WOW! With the modern, welcoming and inviting decor infused with the original building's features such as the Rhodesian floors and teak panelling gave the hotel a comfortable and homely feeling! The rooms I found to be extremely comfortable, almost to the point that leaving them became an effort! Our suite, the St James overlooked the ocean with spectacular sunrises and glorious sunsets! Breakfast was always luxurious with exquisitely fresh, local produce on the Loggia overlooking the garden and ocean.

The dinners were delicious, with fresh garden salads and fresh fish, selected straight from the harbour (it was fantastic!). Robin assisted us with choosing some fascinating and delightful wines that complimented and even challenged the food set before us. As someone who knows very little of wine, I feel I now have a much better understanding of the wines available and just how exciting they can be! I found this education to be extremely enjoyable and am now learning more about wines at every opportunity!

Rodwell House is in a key location, with easy access to all the main tourist attractions in and around Cape Town. I found it be only 30 minutes from everywhere...almost literally! The drive into Cape Town was so easy and straightforward; the drive to the winelands being the same, both for Constantia area and the beautiful Stellenbosch. If we didn't feel like driving, we could walk through to Kalk Bay - a charming little 'oldy worldy' town with mouth-watering cafe's and restaurants. The cultural tour through the fishing harbour and village was definitely one of the highlights!

We shall definitely be returning and have even booked our next stay close to Christmas!

We have recently come back from a fantastic 2 night stay at the fabulous Rodwell House.
I cannot recommend the hotel enough! My fiancé and I were treated so well by the friendly staff and it really felt like we were staying in a homely environment. Our room was MASSIVE! With a very funky bathroom (lovely posh toiletries!)and nice big sitting room area, and private balcony, which over looked the gardens and sea beyond (imagine great whale watching in the right season). There are 2 large lounge areas on the ground floor to chill out in, and enjoy a few glasses of sauvignon blanc after a hard days sightseeing! The hotel only opened in December, and so are still finding their feet (it was pretty quiet when we stayed), but the gardens are pretty much complete now, the pool area is lovely, and the main building is ready for guests (check out all the great art on the walls)! We had a fun evening on our second night with Robin (the owner). He’s extremely knowledgeable about wines, and took great pleasure in showing us his cellar which was like Aladdin’s Cave for wine lovers! We had a couple of fab bottles of wines to go with the delicious meal (tuna carpaccio starter, and Red Roman fish main) prepared by their really friendly and competent new chef.
The hotel is in a lovely area (St james) and nearby Kalk Bay offers some great dinning options. We had dinner at Harbour House (lovely food, great views, terrible service – although think we were just unlucky on the latter!) Great drinks at the nearby Brass Bell too. We also loved wandering round historic Simon’s Town and seeing the cute penguins on Boulders Beach!

My first review dissapeared from site so i am re-posting. We had booked this hotel through the Platinum Portfolio Collection and found that the hotel bore no resemblence to it's write up. The eating lobster and drinking champagne on the balcony was a no starter as their was no chef. The rooms are noisy due to the main coast road and railway line opposite. The room had no information in it, no mirror by the wash hand basins for shaving or anything else. The mirror is actually on the other side of the room behind the bath. No glasses for drinking out of from the very quiet fridge (big plus point). The tidal pool is actually across the main road and then through a tunnel under the railway line. In fact the whole place has the feel of someone who has never run or stayed in a hotel of any class. We checked out.
