“Worth a visit when nearby”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

There is a plenty of Stave churches in Norway. This one is not nice, but not exceptionally big, old nor nice. It is truly average place, but still a nice one, so if you drive near Roldal, you probably should stop and pay a visit. The fee was around 30 NOK.

“not impressive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

There are about a little bit less then 30 stave churches left in Norway, one more impressive then the other one......
I have seen a few of them and the one in Røldal is in my opinion not very spectacular regarding the looks, architecture, woodcarving, size.
Go visit it if you are in the area, but don't plan your whole trip on this church. If you are a church freak then it will be better to see some other ones like the one in Gol, Fantoft, Borgund, Lom and of course Heddal.

“Worth going to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2012

Røldal is about 100km inland from the coastal mid-point between Stavanger and Bergen, or 318km west of Oslo, on the E134 road. It is in a beautiful setting at the bottom of a lush valley with high hills on 3 sides.
This stave church in Røldal was built around the year 1250, and during the middle ages was the most important meeting place for pilgrims, after the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. It was also one of the most important churches in Western Norway in the middle ages. It is the only stave church in Norway still in regular use. How do the Norwegian get wooden buildings to survive nearly 800 years? Amazing!!
What is interesting is that all the way around its perimeter, inside the building, is a corridor where the sick and criminals could attend the religious meetings without mixing with the people in the main part of the church.
There is a guide who will share the history with you. We went with Norwegian friends on our trip around western Norway, and enjoyed it.
