“Attention to detail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2010

I returned to this hotel after a gap of a few years and was surprised by the obvious improvements that have taken place. A pleasant Scottish country house hotel where the management has paid attention to all the small details which make a stay comfortable. The staff are superb and maintain a high standard of service. The food is also excellent.I particularily enjoyed the way the small details such as the quality of the linen, the design of the crockery and the wonderful 'smellies' in the bathroon all appeared to have received thought and consideration. These are the things that distinguish a good hotel from a great one. Thank you.

I have been to Knockderry house on numerous occasions for lunch and dinner. The staff could not be more courteous, pleasant and helpful. The food I must say is absolutely fantastic! You can dine here multiple times a week and yet find something new and exciting everytime.

All the food is seasonal and some of it even forraged from the surrounding hills, wow!

The bar is a lovely cosy room- great on a cold night- you can sit and sup on your drink all night quite happily. Although I would recommend a larger array of real ales.

I have stayed here on two occasions room 1, quite squeaky the floor boards, doors and bed, never the less a very good night sleep! Room 3, FANTASTIC!

And lastly breakfast, such a lovely start to the day, a nice full Scottish breakfast, could be a bit neater on the plate but now I'm just being picky.

I would deffinately recommend this beautiful hotel to anyone that wants the perfect break!

A real curate's egg - fantastic in parts (great building, amazing area, some very good food) but also quite strangely bad in others - overpriced I'm afraid, it really doesn't compete with the other establishments in that budget range. And why is there a large pile of rubble in the front garden? Still there, two years after we went there for lunch and were told it was about to be moved, And i'm afraid the owners don't quite know how to hit the right balance - as Sybil Fawlty, said, either fawning all over the guests (sorry Murdo, but you overdo it) or being bizarrely abrupt. Yes, that's the other half of the owning partnership.

In a spirit of honesty, the hotel requested Trip Advisor to withdraw this posting on the grounds that it did not seem necessarily particularly helpful or beneficial to other travellers, in addition it appeared to violate Trip Advisors own rules on reviews. Trip Advisors own rules indicate that a review must be ‘respectful of Personal Privacy and thus must not contain the personal information of any person, including names, that may be used to identify an individual’.

We would suggest that the implied or explicit and anonymous criticisms levelled are unsupported by any useful explanation or evidence and are therefore rather difficult to act or comment upon in any meaningful or constructive way. It is agreed by the vast majority, who visit, including the reviewer, that this is a beautiful building in a beautiful location and that the food is also very good. A study of the vast majority of other reviews on this and other sites maybe in order to form a balanced view of the way we operate and the quality of service delivery on offer.

We would encourage the individual concerned to contact the hotel if they have a specific grievance as the owners and staff are receptive to all genuine feedback so that, if appropriate, remedies can be identified.

Finally, it is sad that such a personal attack has been placed, perhaps not too surprisingly, anonymously on a public site and says little for the quality or true motivation of the ‘review’. Perhaps too, it tells us more about the reviewer profile than the reviewer intended.

Having just spent the whole weekend staying at the Knockderry for my daughter's wedding, I would rate this hotel very highly. We took exclusive use of the hotel with 28 of us staying in the fabulous rooms and with 40 guests at the wedding. The food was fabulous, everyone in our party had a great time and have raved about the place since our return. If you are looking for a great wedding venue, spacious accommodation and excellent service and food then look no further than the Knockderry. Murdo, Beth and the staff made my daughter's wedding something very special and we will treasure our memories of such a fabulous time.

We came upon this hotel by accident and enjoyed a warm welcome and lovely meal.

On returning to Scotland this year we took some friends with us to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Again we had an exceptional experience, the staff and owners are able to make you feel very welcome and that nothing is too much trouble to make your stay memorable.

The building is a gem with lovely old stained glass and wood carving. There is a roaring open fire in the bar and views over Loch Long from the bay windows.

The menus use locally sourced ingredients and are freshly prepared - delicious.

It is very worthwhile seeking out this hotel. Although I haven't stayed in the hotel I'm sure the high standards I describe would also be reflected in the rooms and facilities.

Booked a master bedroom with four poster. Room was spacious and bed was very good - a really comfortable nights sleep. The Lochside view was quite nice, but you see more trees than loch (large tree just outside the window). Don't expect to watch TV - reception is really poor or non-existent, but then that's not what you're there for. Location is wonderful and the staff we dealt with were very nice. The bathroom however, needs a makeover and a good clean. Under the roll top bath next to the wall was dirty. The toiletries were bolted to the wall and often dripped down under the bath when using them. The toilet seat didn't fit properly and the cistern lid clanged with every flush due to poor fitting. The wardrobe in the room would not close easily and some cobwebs were quickly spotted. The floor is uneven (not a criticism) probably due to the age of the building, but the blocks of wood under the bed and wardrobe to level them could at least have been made to match the furniture. They were rather unsightly. Breakfast was ok but lacked some basic choice and if you wanted certain things (like kippers) you paid extra. I wouldn't expect that when paying for their top room. Overall, location, staff and the look of the building are good but a wee bit of work in the accommodation wouldn't go amiss. Oh, and I've never seen shortbread cut into such small pieces (you get two bits in your room).

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay at Knockderry Country House Hotel and for your comments.
I am delighted you enjoyed the room and were able to experience such a comfortable and peaceful nights sleep – which we feel is one of the real pleasures of coming away to a country hotel. In response to some of your other observations:
The 200 year old oak tree which sits so splendidly in the middle of lawn has been here since before the house was built and is a wonderful feature of the grounds. In our opinion it enhances the view of the lochside, but should you wish to stay with us in the future do ask for the Library Suite which is situated on the top floor and has panoramic views of the loch.
We do acknowledge that tv reception at times is limited and is a consequence of the local terraine. However we are promised in the march towards digital tv we will be included and look forward to that moment. In the meantime we have in excess of 250 DVDs for guests to enjoy.
The bathroom for your room is scheduled a complete refit this winter – however we have already rectified all the points you raised and thank you for your observations. The furniture in the bedroom is Victorian and at times needs some tender loving care.
Breakfast includes we believe a wide variety of choice and are puzzled at your comments. The buffet maybe limited to look at as we prefer to make up a fresh fruit salad, grapefruit etc to order than to leave them warming in a buffet bowl, as indeed the notice on the buffet explains. Hot items for breakfast include, full Scottish Breakfast with stornoway black pudding and homemade sausages, a wonderful vegetarian breakfast with homemade veggie haggis, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, kippers, smoked haddock and of course a delicious porridge and honey. The small supplement is included to ensure we can continue to provide this wide range without raising prices across the board.
Finally, our delicious shortbread is made specially for us by Chrystal and although only two pieces are left for you a day - you are always welcome to ask for more.
With very best wishes Beth and Murdo MacLeod

Stayed here for onw night with my husband as part of our trip to Scotland. OUr room was very luxurious and spacious. The bathroom was also very spacious and spotlessly clean. The staff were totally on top of their game too. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and it was easily the best meal we enjoyed during our entire time in Scotland. The view is just inceredible. If we were ever to return to Scotland we would definitely be going back. The only I would say is even as we got closer to the hotel it was a little difficult to find. I would recommend one ot two more signs on the road. Very, very enjoyable. A real gem!!
