Stayed over the new year period with the family. I have enjoyed Hyatts in many locations and this is a very typical Grand Hyatt in many ways. However, they seem to have missed the "India" factor where things need that little bit more focus and attention, particularly when expectations are so high from incoming foreign guests looking for that "Goa" experience.
A wonderful setting on arrival, sweeping entrance into Bambolim area. Note no signage from the main road, however, that is likely due to Goan regulations, but considering the muscle of Hyatt, surprised to see nothing.
One thing Hyatt have to fix quickly is the welcome. No cold towels, drinks , guest relations at the entrance is a big no no here, especially when Leela, Taj, Oberoi are doing it as a basic.
Reception area is nice, but lacks a little warmth. A junior team in evidence does not help when you launch a new hotel either. Check in was fine, escort to the rooms fine, although distance from main block will need to be considered when making your booking (The rooms are in separate accommodation blocks away from the main building, ie. for older guests).
Room wise, ground floor pool facing are nice as you can walk straight from your room to the pool area. Room interior typically Hyatt, sharp and contemporary, with usual quirks. Newness of hotel still there as our bath had dry plaster / paint ? marks still sprayed on surface which put my wife off from bathing.Wardrobe doors difficult to open with design. Bed pillows feather but too soft. Linen great. TV channels not configured as per listing. Amenities fine. Docking station fine. Internet charges a bit steep but expected. Would be nice to have at least free wifi around the pool area. Lots of people on laptops / tablets.
The mosquito issue as mentioned by previous reviewers is random. I had 2 rooms. The kids had no problems at all. Us, on second night killed at least 8 mozzies between 12 midnight and 4am....was very disturbing. I do think that they are coming through the AC vent however as our room was sealed. Yes we had extra mozzie killers in the room also.
Main restaurant is great for selection, breakfast is a little congested and needs better floor management. Again, welcome process weak and table allocation. Chefs are interactive and food is as per Hyatt Standard. Breakfast buffet solid. Would separate juices and milk as people fighting for both in same area. Dinner buffet good selection again. Pizza oven and prep is good. Kids enjoyed the A la Carte Pizza. Main issue over the time was the service.......not a single management in evidence and if they were, they were not visible. Repeatedly asking for cutlery, refill coffee, plate clearance etc etc is not what one wants to do on vacation, but I think its a leadership issue, nothing more. Need some experienced bfast staff!!! Dinner same issues unfortunately. Again no visible senior management. (Hyatt managers are normally very visible in most of the other properties I have stayed which makes it even stranger considering the newness of the hotel and first impressions)
Pool design is excellent, kids loved it. Few safety issues however, we witnessed a child get into difficulties in deep water as no clear demarcation lines and lifeguard coverage sparse and not experienced. Needs immediate attention for such a large pool area. Also algae forming on pool floor also, needs more chlorination. Pool service is good once you get the boys in tune with what you need. A simple walk once around by the servers to check their would work wonders!! Plus simple things like the offer of a cold face towel, a fruit skewer etc, all things that cost nothing but can make the difference!
Beach is a major issue for the hotel but again they are not helping themselves. When we were there, only 3/4 parasols were set, no beach services in evidence, the beach is heavily silted unfortunately so water is not good for swimming although you can. Also, we experienced a small oil slick effect with a heavy diesel smell and black residue washing up. However, if your kids like collecting shells then this beach is A1 for that. Locals also tend to wander looking for some "flesh" viewing as well which should be noted.
Information process to guests needs to be improved considerably. For example, there was an event outside on the terrace when we were there for Russian New Year and we only found out when we spoke with another guest. In room directory sparse. Activity program could be placed on inhouse TV channel. Guys its a resort!!!
All in all, generally ok. However, I would suggest Hyatt India look at the feedback on this site!!! Not a single response from the hotel to any feedback says a lot about how much they appear to care about feedback. It's a shame. This could easily be the No1 Hotel in Goa. Hope on our next visit we will see the changes!
Ground floor pool facing. Ask for blocks closer to main building
