“Ideal Hiking Hub/Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Nigel and Charlie are far too kind, going out of their way to make late dinners for lost hikers and answering the many questions we all have to ask. I hiked in all different directions: Scafell, Bow Fells, Esk Pike, Howe Tarn, Hawshead, Skelwith Bridge—the location was great. Thanks for the lovely stay! Clean, friendly, and charming.

Lovely small Youth Hostel in the pretty village of Elterwater, situated at the end of Great Langdale in the Lake District. Friendly and welcoming staff and a great base for walking the surrounding fells. Only downside is lack of parking, but there is a National Trust carpark nearby, which is free if you're a member and a little on street parking in the village.

Thanks for the great review. It's true, the parking can be a bit of a pain, but as you say, there are ways around the problem. Always happy to help...

Booked a short weekend with friends and shared a triple bunk bed room for ourselves.Very welcoming staff who aim to please and help in any way possible and they did ! Easy check-in and found way to room on the ground floor. Very simple basic room ,but what do you expect for £23 a night with breakfast. Other facilities are good , nice showers and ablutions. There is a good drying room available for your wet gear and self catering facilities for those wanting to do their own thing. The morning breakfast was excellent plus a good choice of cereals, yoghurts and the usual full English to set you up for the day. There is also a small bar in the evening although we didn't try any drinks. It is very quiet within and nothing to disturb your good night's sleep . All in all a lovely little hostel that sadly will be no more for next year as it is being put up for sale at the end of the year :(

Thanks for the great review. Whilst it’s true that YHA have taken the decision to put Elterwater hostel up for sale, it doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t be here next year. It can be a lengthy process. Also, it is quite possible that the hostel will remain as a hostel, even after the sale, so if you do wish to stay with us, please check the YHA website for the latest information, or give us a call’

I stayed at Elterwater YHA for a couple of nights in earlier this month. I really enjoyed my stay. The hostel is in a beautiful setting and great to go walking from with a variety of walks for all abilities from flat walks by the water to more challenging walks in the hills. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and made a great recommendation for a walk for me. They are very knowledgeable about the local area. The pub is about a 1 minute walk away and was lovely too. I'm a national trust member so could park about 100 yards away in the car park, you can unload on the driveway and then move your car down the road if your a national trust member or leave it a bit further down the road if you're not, it didn't seem an issue that you can park next to the house.

It may benefit from a bit of a spruce up but in no way did this detract from my great stay. I was very pleased that I stayed here and will definitely go back to try some more walks in the area.

A very friendly hostel. Excellent friendly Managers happy to help. Good food, warm rooms and a wonderful location. Stayed here over Easter with a a large outdoor group...it can't have been easy to organise but the atmosphere was lovely. Breakfasts were excellent and a good start to the day. Parking is a bit of a problem but with a National Trust sticker for the car park it is a difficulty easily overcome...there is also free parking a bit further up the road. Cosy and comfortable. Easily accessible walks for all levels.Would be very happy to stay again.

We have stayed at the hostel on several occasions . It is located on the edge of the village and offers simple accommodation at a great price . The staff are really helpful. The local pub is really good and just round the corner. The only drawback is there is no parking but some in village which is free ifyou are in the national trust.
