“Best pub ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

The only downside to this stay at the Britannia Inn was that it was only for 1 night, I would have loved to stay longer & will most certainly visit again
It has to be one of the most welcoming & friendly pubs I have visited, the choice & quality of the food was excellent, an excellent choice of beers & every one of them that I sampled was superb. Rooms were cosy & spotlessly clean & just to round it off like everything else at the Brit the breakfast was excellent.

Enjoyed yet another excellent short stay at this historically beautiful, welcoming and true Lakeland Inn. As the weather was at it's January best, it was most pleasing when returning from a misty, frosty and bracing walk over the low fells to relax before a well kept open fire in one of the two well stocked cosy bars. Wonderful excuse to indulge in a most palatable, warming mulled wine and enjoy the ambient atmosphere in pleasant company. We were happy to eat in either the restaurant (doggie free zone) or the bar, so took our evening meals in the restaurant with the given option to dine in the bar if we wished. Recommend you book a table either way though, as the place can suddenly become busy with groups of visitors. Not surprising, as the standard of fayre is very good and most reasonably priced. I found their minted Lamb Henry so tender and tasty, I chose it on two consecutive evenings which is rare for me, but it really was that good. Yet again, we were served an impressive breakfast of high quality, well portioned, with plenty of options to satisfy most preferences. Found all the staff are consistently welcoming and naturally friendly. Our comfortably heated, pleasantly decorated double room offered a view over the side car park upwards to a small wooded fell. Good the room was just big enough to accomodate our dog's soft bed also. Comfy bed, clean bed linen, towels, tv, courtesy tray and sufficient storage. Good shower, with an overhead spray (cannot adjust the height), consistent supply of hot water and well lit bathroom. Free adjacent parking, beer garden to front of Inn which is an excellent suntrap on sunny days. Really appreciate they allow well behaved dogs on leads in some of the bedrooms and in the bar areas. A most pleasant and welcome return to a beautiful Lakeland Inn. Look out for their low season offers. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 9 is to the rear of the Inn, nice and peaceful. One window gives a pleasant view over the side...

Been dining at the Brit for over35 years, many owners have come and and gone but still a solid venue for dinner. Excellent selection of guest beers, well kept. Dinner specials always good, accompanied by a super selection of chefs seasonal veg. Their portions are very generous and the quality of produce used is top quality. Long may it live on and thrive.

Amazing food, friendly staff! The only bad thing is it is very cramped inside! And there are dogs all around when you are eating, please change that then i will return. Overall i found the visit very pleasant, nice crisps by the way!

My boyfriend was delighted to find this little gem as it has a great real ale selection. I, on the other hand, was delighted that he was happy and I could still enjoy the open fire, great food and cosy atmosphere. Our knowledgeable barman talked DWC through the ales and was very helpful with our food and drink orders all night. The food itself was fab: BIG portions (especially the fish and chips) and delicious. If you choose to go to the dining room you pay 10% more but we were happy in the bar area. I'm sure some people would prefer to pay the extra if they are not fond of dogs as they are welcome in the bar area, but it didn't bother us a jot! A great wee find.

One of the best pubs in The Lake District , or anywhere else for that matter, the Brit is a traditional pub with a great choice of beer and very good food at reasonable prices, and even better it hasn't been gastro'd to death like a lot of the more pretentious pubs in the Lakes. Open fires, welcoming friendly staff and a relaxed attitude to dogs complete the package. The only downside is it's deserved popularity mean that at the prime lunch and early evening times, it does get a little crammed. I have stayed in the past, but not recently so I won't comment this time on the accommodation.

Visited the Inn in November after a medium walk. We were stood outside and were about to ask if dogs were aloud in when a villager said 'dogs are allowed' and showed us to the side entrance. Here we found an cast iron fire warming a snug at the rear very cosy.

We ordered food and local ales and were surprised how plentiful the meals were and how delicious. Word of warning be careful of ordering too much, we ordered a start too and had to leave some food!

The staff were excellent and paid alot of attention to our two husky dogs, one member even gave them a load of roast beef from the Sunday lunch! Dogs very happy too.

Great Inn, food and ales and I can see it would be a real treat in summer sat outside admiring the views
