“Standards Slipping?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

Visited here for dinner Saturday 25th August, 2013. It was lovely weather, and we managed to grab a table outside. I have previously visited the pub three times before for dinner, the last time being three years ago.

I am sad to report that standards do seem to be slipping, and for me, consistancy is everything, and attention to detail was missing here, which was a shame.

I ordered the duck special, and the duck was overcooked by quite some margain. For £15, I really would have expected better. My Wife's pie was stodgy, but good amount of ham within.

Chef's champ was good, but veg overcooked and unseasoned. Was sush a shame as it was a lovely summer's evening, let down by a few errors in the kitchen. I am unsure if there have been changes in the kitchen staff, but something did seem to be missing, and for what is being charged, £15 a main course, £3.40 a pint, these do need to be ironed out really.

The pub itself is still in a good position, and if the weather is good, the outdoor area is perfect. I would still return, but perhaps have a BBQ beforehand, and go just for a drink.

Thank you for the review.
I am really sorry you did not enjoy your meal at the Brit.
We cooked 147 meals on the Bank holiday Saturday in question! So pretty busy.
I have asked all the staff who were working that night if they remember any complaints, they did not.
It's the age old problem, if we don't know something is wrong we cant fix it!!
If you had pointed out your displeasure with your meal to one of the staff we could have re-cooked your meal to your satisfaction.
I don't really know what else to say, except please speak to the staff and tell them what's wrong.
A review on TripAdvisor does not get your duck re-cooked!
Cheers Andy Parker(Landlord)

“Best pub in the world!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

This review is for the pub rather than the B&B, as I have yet to stay the night, although friends who have all rave even more about the place. The pub is just what you'd expect from a traditional lake district pub, which is probably what attracts customers from all over the world. The network of small rooms, each with its own fire (and a friendly local dog), make for a really social homely feel. Its a great place to pick up travel tips from other customers and bar staff. The choice of drinks is excellent all at very reasonable prices. The perfect place to drop into after a days working in the lakes. This is the benchmark for what a pub should be!

“excellent country pub, freindly welcoming staff, good real ales and lovely REAL fires in winter!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

Favourite pub in the Lakes, beautiful view, good selection of real ales, real fires and old world charm, what more can you ask for? Oh yes - the best cheesy chips in Cumbria. Lovely rolls with interesting fillings, but only wholewheat, which although healthy, I hate. Main course meals are a bit expensive but the soup's homemade. They also do a lovely battered halloumi starter.

“Ticked all the boxes!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

Good food, fairly prompt and reasonably priced. Bar service was good and a friendly, traditional atmosphere. Cosy inside and family orientated outside.

“Great location, great staff, good honest food and good beer!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

Stayed here for a three day walking spell in the Langdale Valley. We still can't understand why after 16 years of walking in the Lakes we have not discovered this place before!

The location is perfect for walkers and the accommodation has everything you need. Breakfast was one of the best we have eaten.

We ate in the restaurant on two occasions and had very good quality food presented well with good honest portions. After 8 hours of high level walking, what more could you ask for? The range of micro brewery beers was excellent including the availability of premium continental lagers for those who prefer those.

It is worth a special mention for the staff who were extremely helpful and couldn't do enough for you.

The pub was busy throughout our stay which is indicative that they have the formula correct. We will be returning.
