“Breathtaking, Luxurious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights during our honeymoon. We agree that Sandalwood provided the best accommodations of anywhere we stayed. Highly recommended!

Facilities: The villas are GORGEOUS. We stayed in Plumeria, which had its own infinity pool and sun deck. Our room had an impeccable coastal ocean view, authentic Thai decor, and was simultaneously spacious and functional. Everything was clean and well maintained. The villas were luxurious without being pretentious.

Management: Jip at the front desk was particularly helpful and sweet, always greeting us with a smile. None of the staff were anything less than courteous, including the staff drivers and the owner himself. The staff provided us with a cell phone during our stay so that we could call to arrange rides to and from Sandalwood at all hours of the day or night. Wow! They were also extremely responsive and helpful in planning excursions and recommending restaurants. Service gets an A+

Food: Breakfast is served daily at the Sandalwood restaurant. There is a buffet, and hot food is made to order. We particularly enjoyed the fruit, the omelets and the Thai noodles. The restaurant food overall was great (room service was quick and delicious!). Thai choices abound, but for those looking from a break from spicy/curry will not be disappointed with the selection.

Location: Sandalwood is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Chawang (main town of beaches, bars, restaurants), but we found its hillside location to be a positive factor. The villas are quiet and peaceful without feeling inaccessible. I recommend walking (or jogging if you are up for it!) up the hill towards the golf course from Sandalwood, the vistas are amazing and the hills make for some good exercise.

Spa: We got two massages each at the spa and we were not disappointed. You'll pay more than in town, but the difference is stark. A thorough menu of massages, tranquil music, professional staff, and an un-rushed feel make the Sandalwood spa a must.

To provide some mild criticism, Sandalwood doesn't currently have a fitness center. Not everyone cares about this, but it would make it that much better for guests who like to work out.

Overall, Sandalwood is romantic, well run, and breathtakingly gorgeous. We highly recommend it for couples, but surely all kinds of travelers would enjoy it. Don't miss it if you go to Samui!

Room Tip: Plumeria was top notch!

Stayed here for 12 nights in August (Camellia) and can highly recommend. One of the nicest places ever stayed in.

It is located away from the noise and lights of the beach resort so ideal for couples or families who want a quiet and relaxing holiday.

We justed wanted to unwind and it was the perfect place to do so.

The Camellia villa (2 king size beds) was amazing with a private bacolny and pool and had a wonderful view.

Breakfast was delicious and the food in the restaurant was some of the best I've ever tasted. (They deliver to your room too. We had dinner on the villa terrace and watching the lights of the fishing boats was something you can't put a price on).

We used the spa facilities (inc steam room) every other day we were there (Had booked a package to include massages, body wraps etc) and the treatments were excellent. The staff in the spa are lovely and the standards excellent.

The staff (from reception to the reastaurant) are amazing and made us feel very welcome and even provide a mobile to contact them when out on the island should you need any help etc. (nice touch)

On our last day our flight wasn't until late evening. Had a late checkout and then had use of another villa until our (free) shuttle took us to Koh Samui airport (The airport has to be seen to be believed; like something out of a Bounty advert).

Used their free daily shuttles to the beaches (mobile handy if you wanted to come back at a time to suit you) and the taxi service to Fisherman's Village. The drivers always polite and helpful and ensured you knew where to go and to call them when you needed to be collected).

Good size TV, satellite (managed to catch Tottemham game on local tv!), dvd player and free wifi (There is also a laptop in reception. Most people have ipads, netbooks etc now and providing free wifi always says something about a place. Have stayed in big brand hotels and can never understand why they charge for internet access). Had a large selection of dvds and books available too.

Hired a car for one day to tour the island. Not a big place, so you don't need a car every day)

If you are going to Koh Samui; can strongly recommend here.

I chose Sandalwood Villas on the basis of its #1 ranking on Tripadvisor. Let me state from the outset that there is nothing wrong with this hotel. However, a five star hotel it most certainly is not. With so many truly excellent five star hotels on the island, I fail to understand how this hotel can occupy the top spot on Tripadvisor. That's not the fault of the hotel or of the hotel management, but rather the Tripadvisor members who persistently rank this hotel on a par with the top five stars on the island. I'm utterly perplexed as to why. The only thing this hotel really has going for it is the view.

I was disappointed with the overall experience and would have preferred one of the other well regarded resorts. We went for dinner at Rocky's and at Zazen, and either of them would have been far preferable to Sandalwood, more in keeping with my expectations of a luxury resort.

Let's start out by saying that you pay for the ranking that this hotel enjoys on Tripadvisor. I paid around 13,000 baht per night for the Amarin Villa, which is definitely five star territory from a pricing point of view. The villa itself is nice. Marble floors, large bathroom, comfortable facilities, although the decor is perhaps a little dated. The windows have blinds and heavy curtains to shut out the light if this is important to you. The terrace is nice, with its own jacuzzi and a fantastic view, probably one of the better views on the island. The room itself was spacious. Overall, I had no major complaints with the room, although the little touches you find in five star hotels were lacking here.

The grounds were nice and well tended, set on some steep slopes. You will have read the reviews that say how steep the road going up to the hotel is. Believe it. You'll need a 4WD if you rent a vehicle. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of all was the food. Breakfast was barely three star quality, and certainly not what I expected in this price bracket. Lunch and dinner was better, although the menu was limited and by no means on a par with a restaurant in a five star hotel.

I didn't experience the much talked about service. Apart from ordering some items on room service, the only thing I did ask for was that the telephone be fixed. It was non-functional on arrival, so we had to keep calling the hotel switchboard from our mobile phones. Apparently the cause was an electrical storm. The phone was still not functional 5 days later.

There is a beach at the bottom of the very steep hill. The hotel supplies a basket with towels for the beach and there is a shuttle that will take you down. Be warned. You will not find any sunbeds or umbrellas to rent on the beach. It's you and the sand. If you want a sunbed and umbrella, then you will have to go to Chaweng or Lamai Beach. Or book into one of the beachfront hotels.

In summary, if you're expecting a five star hotel with good dining options, then I suggest you look elsewhere. This is three star at five star prices. Had this hotel not enjoyed such a stellar ranking on Tripadvisor, I'd have rated it "average". However, due to the poor value and the weight of disppointed expectations, it gets a "poor" rating.

We do travel a lot and have been to nice hotels.
Sandalwood ranks amongst the nicests we have been to.
Although the style of the room is not contemporary (which we usually prefer), it was vey well designed and had a wondeful view.
We highly recommend thye Plumeria villa, with its balcony + patio + large private jacuzzi.
The room itself is spacious with all amenities.

The staff is efficient and very nice.

The food is excellent and the restaurant offers a wide variety.
The best is to order your dinner on the balcony of your villa. It is a great experience.

We highly recommend you rent a motorbike in order to be able to go out without being dependant on the car service of the hotel or any expensive taxi service as the hotel is on top of a very steep hill.

These villas are amazing! The attention to detail displayed by all staff means you can have a carefree stay which we were particularly seeking for our honeymoon. We arrived early am and whilst our villa wasn't ready we were accommodated in another and encouraged to use amenities at our leisure. We then moved to the Jumpee villa which is spacious, private, has amazing views and infinity pool. Jip at reception was always helpful and went above and beyond to make arrangements we required. They have thought of everything here so guests don't have to!

I stayed at the sandalwood with three of my girlfiriends and we had the most amazing time. It's all about service. This is a very boutique hotel with 10 residences and as a result the staff was very attentive and anticipated our needs. They h.elped us with everything that we needed and i feel like we got personlized service (unlike at a large chain hotel). We met the owners, who were so friendly and helpful... and we loved the staff. They treated us like family. They provided us with a cell phone, upgraded our room (which was beautifully constructed and decorated). The experience made me fall in love with Thailand and I would definitely stay here again (even though I avoid going to the same places twice). Oh, good breakfast and breathtaking views. Just loved, loved the overall experience.

Stayed at sandalwood for 4 nights, 1 night in gardenia and the other 3 in plumeria.
Both rooms were wonderful.
Plumeria had amazing views from every place in the villa!
The service was excellent.
The hill is big, but if you hire a scooter it can go up no problem.
Look forward to coming back here in the future!
