“Fantastic resort - excellent service even in medical emergency”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2011

I have just returned from a week at Sandalwood, staying in Leelawadee Villa with my husband and daughter, my parents, and my sister. We would all highly recommend the resort.
Firstly: we had a medical emergency whilst away, my sister collapsed and had to be rushed to hospital. We cannot express our gratitude enough to the staff and in particular the American owner, George, who did everything in their power (and above and beyond) to get her to the hospital fast and ensure she received excellent care whilst there. George himself drove us to the hospital, hand on the horn the whole way, and once there, ran around ensuring she got the next doctor asap. We ended up needing to spend the night in hospital and George also brought supplies and flowers. Cannot stress highly enough how wonderfully caring and helpful this was, it certainly brought us peace of mind. Oh, also, if you're wondering, the hospital in Koh Samui is great, like a hotel with beautiful landscaped gardens and excellent rooms and we could not fault the staff or doctors regarding the treatment she received. Most of them spoke English very well. Always nice to know when you're travelling to a foreign country!
Secondly, travelling with a 6month old baby: this resort is perfect for that, the airport transfers they provide free of charge had a baby seat with 5 point safety harness and the staff had already set up a great cot (would have met Australian safety standards) in our room. Too easy really. Also, because there are so few villas and most have their own pool, we weren't interrupting anyone else's holiday when bubs was upset!
So, the Leelawadee Villa: has 3 rooms, one with a huge king bed and ensuite bathroom; another with a queen size bed and shared bathroom with the third bedroom which has 2 single beds. The Villa is at the end of the resort with uninterrupted and breathtaking views from a beautiful deck and infinity pool. Couldn't be more beautiful really. There is also a large living/lounge area with a full kitchen if cooking takes your fancy..... although why would you when the room service and meals are so brilliant?! A/C in all the rooms was good; mattresses were comfortable; TVs in the two main rooms; ceiling fans.
The Food: breakfast is much improved since our first stay here 2 years ago and any reviews that touch negatively on the breakfast must have been written before they implemented the new system. There is a small continental buffet with fresh croissants; toast; cereals; yoghurts; fruit and you also choose a meal off the breakfast menu. You can have omelettes with your choice of filling; scrambled eggs; pancakes with fruit/maple syrup; sausages; bacon; asian breakfasts and 'spa breakfast' (healthy choice). Highly recommend the pancakes with fresh fruit baked into them - delicious. The tea and coffee is also excellent and there is a range of fresh fruit juices and smoothies you can order if you like. Lunches and dinners are also great, we didn't eat away from the resort the whole 7 days we were there and we didnt come close to exhausting the menu. There is also a good range of Western food available with the average cost of a main meal being about Aus$6....unbelievable value! All the staff are very friendly and only to happy to help with organizing day trips, cars to local shopping areas or beaches. Spa treatments (approx $35 aus for an hour) on site were a touch of heaven and plenty of variety to have a different massage or treatment each day. An absolute must to experience is the personalised bbq on your own deck by the pool....a real touch of decadence with fantastic food and service....a perfect way to spend our last evening in this beautiful place!
The Service: nothing is too difficult for the staff here, and because there are only a handful of villas but over 30 staff members, its all very personalised. As an example, on our first day here I asked if there was any pomelo at breakfast (my favourite Thai fruit) and although there wasn't on that day, the staff got it in (it wasn't even in season but they found some ripe ones!) and it was on the breakfast fruit platter every morning thereafter. The breakfast staff also remembered which of us preferred tea and which coffee so that we didn't even need to tell them after the first day, they just kept the refills coming! I think what sums the service up best is George's philosophy, he says "Its all about treating the staff really well, the rest just naturally follows". So true.
The Location: yes, its on a hill. No biggy. They run shuttles to shopping areas and beaches, its not a big island so it doesnt take long to get anywhere you want to go. We thought the location was the best part because without it being up the hill the view from our infinity pool wouldn't have been uninterrupted ocean as far as the eye can see! Its also quiet, the perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of a day shopping in Thai market strips!
Finally, we all think this is the perfect resort, you have everything just right George, don't change it please!!

Stayed here in early August 2011....
Rented the Leelawadee villa (the largest one)....
The view of Koh Samui was breathless and the infinity pool sealed the deal!!!
While it is no Aman resort (thats why I couldnt give it a 5 star -although Ive only given 4 stars to some Aman resorts), the location and view is priceless!! While its not beachside and as many reviews have mentioned that its located at the hillside, again the view and location is PRICELESS!!!
the staff was very accomodating and friendly particularly Pimpasorn!! She was great to talk to! The rest of the front desk crew were also a bunch of sweethearts... the rooms were decent, food served within the resort was also decent... didnt get a chance to check out their spa due to my compressed schedule...

while getting to town was through the shuttle rides they provide.. it was no deterrent to my experience in Sandalwood and Koh Samui! I took a day trip around Koh Samui using one of their privately owned vehicle and personal driver.. I forgot his name but he took me to the must see places in Koh Samui including Chaweng Beach, Lamai (?) Beach, went to see the Grandmother and Grandfather rock, Mummified Monk, Big Buddha Statue, and even did some cable riding atop the hills/mountains of Koh Samui...

I also ate at the restaurant they recommended called the Spirit House.. pretty cool restaurant with decent food... Saw a Muay Thai fight in the arena... even petted a tiger for a really cool looking memorable pic!!

even with my short stay in Koh Samui, it was an amazing adventure and Sandalwood was a part of that unforgettable trip to Koh Samui!!

oh, btw, there is no gym facility within this hotel, for those who seek that amenity.. although there are small gyms within the town..

would i recommend it? Absolutely! But read the other reviews and decide for yourself..

the best part is privacy and the view, you can easily sit anywhere in your spacious villa open area, nobody will disturb you and you can feel into each other. i love sandelwood and highly recommend for honeymoon.

My girl friend and I stayed in their 'flagship' villa, the lotus, and it was amazing, really awesome view, plenty of aircon units to keep nice and cool, really friendly staff, the free breakfast was very nice with a few choices. The only downside I can think of was the 100 baht charge for each time you order room service meals etc. The location is on a very steep hill and quite far up, but they give you a free cell phone to take with you and they will drive you up and down at your request for free. They also offer free transportation daily to a couple different places which is great. The room cleaning was very good and quick compared to some places I've stayed at.
The staff were very friendly, you get your own name put on a welcome board in the reception on the day you arrive, makes you feel special haha. I managed to meet the owner, and he is very friendly too and takes an interest in his staff and actually cares about them which is good. Free wifi, great, even a laptop in the reception to use for free. Free books and dvds from their collection in the reception to read/watch in your room.
The lotus has a very big deck with like 5 chairs outside which is cool the room is very well decorated. Best place I've ever stayed in. First class no doubt about it 10/10 would stay again!

The villas are beautiful, very well appointed - numerous small little specials give you a sense of luxury and personal touch. The staff (led by Pon - the general manager) is very friendly and go out of the way to appease you. The food is nice and simple - typical of small

The only downside is the location. The property is off the ring road and at a bit of a height. Although it helps in getting a great view of the sea, the location is short of being ideal for those looking for quick access to the beaches and and restaurants of Bo Phut, Lamai and Chwaeng areas.

Room Tip: Consider renting a car. The hotel transport is not the cheapest in town and getting taxis to climb t...

I've been meaning to write this review for ages, but time seems to get away.

We stayed in the Amarin villa for 4 nights last January and wished it could have been much longer. The resort is up a very steep hill, you would not want to walk, but the sort will drive you up or down the hill, and provide a mobile so you can call them to collect from the bottom of the hill. Alternatively hire a scooter or car to get around. It's worth being up there as the views are incredible, and its so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle at the end of the day to these lovely peaceful apartments.

The staff were fantastic, very eager to please and always smiling. They even babysat for us at the last minute on our last night so that we could go and do some shopping on our last night without our two year old.

I can't wait to go back, and the next time we are in Koh Samui, we will definitely return here.

We spent two nights at Sandalwood in the Lotus Villa. It was beautiful. We were picked up from the Buddha Pier by one of their drivers. The staff greeting us were very kind and professional. The Villa was AMAZING! My girlfriend and I were really impressed by the property. The Villa was beautiful, you have an amazing view of Koh Samui and it is nice to stay in a place that you can open the windows (they have screens) turn on the fans and sleep without air condition for a couple of nights. Beds are comfortable not hard as many other Thai hotels, and the rooms are extremely clean. There is a free shuttle to the beach below the property which is very beautiful and worth hanging out at. They also provide a complementary cell phone for guest to use when they need to contact hotel staff for taxi rides.
The food at the on site property was very good. They have a full Vegetarian menu, and they have healthy smoothies (ginger, carrot, mango, coconut, etc. no sugar added!) The David sampler plate has a very good selection of chicken satay, spring rolls, and fish cake, It was very tasty. The curries; vegetarian and regular are very good.
The staff is very accommodating, Pon the manager was able to answer all our questions. The other staff members are are very proficient in English and able to assist your needs. We asked them for suggestions and they were able to answer our questions and meet our every need. Everyone on site is extremely accommodating and friendly.
Sandalwood is away from Chaweng but it is worth staying here! You really do not need to leave the property, everything you need is there. If you would like to get some excercise you can walk above the property around a golf course. It is a very nice view of Lamai.
The shuttle service is 400 baht one way which is reasonable. Taxis will charge you the same rate. If you go into town try out Rice or Red Snapper.
Breakfast which is included in most of the room rates is very filling and good. You are offered fresh fruit, yogurt, and your meal choice. We really enjoyed this property because it is small and secluded. The landscaping is beautiful. The spa therapist were very good.
You will enjoy both pools, the views are breathtaking. I highly recommend you staying at this hotel. It is an amazing place to stay, we would have loved to stay longer!!!!

Room Tip: all the rooms offer superb views.
