“Wonderful hotel and very well looked after! :-)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Myself and my boyfriend arrived at this hotel in Koh Samui on 16th March and we had booked for 10 nights accommodation. It was a lovely arrival presented with a refreshing drink in a coconut and a cold towel to freshen up a little after our long journey from Manchester, UK.
Anyway without writing a huge essay I just wanted to say that this is a superb hotel with fantastic staff who were always polite and would do anything to help. The restaurant and bars were wonderful and food was perfect. Our villa was basic but just what we needed. The only thing I can say is that the TV channels are all over the place and wasnt really much use, which we only needed one night when I had sun stroke. The hotel was very quiet in the evening after around 8pm- we still dont know where everyone got to. :-) The two male singers on guitar and bass were fantastic and made the evenings lovely and chilled. We called them Ronnie and Reggie. :-) The food was fab but the seafood night was expensive £25 just for the lobster. We thought it was a bit pricey and overrated but still an experience. Eating at the hotel wasnt hugely expensive compared to other places in Lamai which we thought was fantastic but then when you think of the cost of food and drink on top of the holiday itself it was expensive. Lamai was the nearest town and was either a cab drive away at a cost of 400 bahts = £8 each way and the hotel shuttle was much cheaper but not very regluar. It is cheaper to hire a car/scooter but then there is the problem of the drinking (which by the way they dont have a problem with, just us!!). Hotel beach was lovely, sea ok for swimming but a lot of dead corel which i kept standing on, much further out I believe the reef starts. Hotel snorkelling gear was a bit poor but it was free.

The hotel manager was lovely and spoke to us asking how our stay was and gave us some advice on where to go in Lamai for something to eat. The restaurant trainee manager Stephen was also very good and spoke to us on numerous occasions and was ensuring the place ran smoothly. Trying to commuinate with some of the staff was a bit of a struggle and nearly cost me a room upgrade but then managed to book a treatment at the spa and not a Spa room upgrade!!

Lamai was a bit of an eye opener and not as expected. It took a bit of getting used to but was full of bars, restaurants and massage parlours!!!! But a good market with dodgy knock off gear but a good laugh at the tazers and DVD collections straight from the cinema.

We hired a jeep (just about MOT'd we reckon) and it took us about a day to tour round the island so didnt need to hire it for any longer. Roads are crazy and actually quite scary so if you are a little scared of BEDLAM on the roads, then avoid hiring scooters and cars. Bo Phut on the north of the island was lovely. Didnt brave Chaweng because Lamai was enough to deal with!!

We went on two boat trips. The National Marine Park Ang Thong in a speed boat was great fun but extremely busy and very regimented so didnt enjoy that as much as we thought. But we also booked the hotel boat trip to 3 Islands which was 5 star. It was much more chilled with two snorkelling stops with great corel and fish and then a stop at an island for lunch which was a packed lunch provided by the hotel and was lovely. I would highly recommended this boat trip!! We also did the elephant trekking which was great fun and a definite for the price.

Anyway to round it up, it was an amazing holiday at a highly recommended hotel with a few good trips to break up the 34 degree beach break!! Dont try walking to Lamai as we did- hence the sun stroke!! 10 days was perfect, could maybe have done a bit longer but was struggling because the hotel is a little out of it.

Turned out to be a long review but hopefully useful to you all. Enjoy your amazing tropical adventure!

Room Tip: Standard room was actually lovely. Basic but good aircon, lovely bed and clean.

hi all am at the centara right now on a 16 day stay , was a little apprehensive about hotel after a fantastic stay at dusit thani bangkok but had no need to be...this resort is paradise and all villas and individuall beats hotel blocks anyday....our pool villa room 333 is excellent only complaint is it is overlooked on 1 side but a little fencing would sort this out....staff what can i say this deffo is the land of smiles every member of staff so polite and willing to help in any way and not because they are after tips they generally aim to please.....beach a little rocky but still great...food at restaurant is really great and if using baht bonanza prices are good....BAHT BONANZA this is a great idea and on arrival you have 24hrs to take up this offer, you can put in anything from 10,000 baht upwards...we did 30,000 (£600ish) and centara gave us 20,000 so total of 50,000 baht this basically makes us all inclusive and am already thinking we could have trouble spending it all and we are not holding back but we have got 12 days left........we are already thinking about booking again for next easter when we get home...yes is a bit remote but this is just what we wanted you have everything here for a relaxing holiday at centara but also 2 lovely restaraunts , a massage and lundry service all 5 min walk away, but if you fancy something a bit more hectic lamia is 15 mins away and hotel provides bus....so back to my pool for a dip..lol...

Room Tip: do book a pool villa as so worth it, and do the baht bonanza..

lovely resort- a little out of the main thrust of things but the hotel has a shuttle bus and bus/taxis are easy and cheap to get hold of if you need more nightlife
hotel was spotless, staff very friendly.
beach was cleaned and raked daily with helpful staff providing free towels and umberellas
not for the faint hearted though. each room is a chalet style and set into beautiful gardens, however there are a number of stairs to be climbed along little pathways. this is not a wheelchair friendly hotel but can get fabulous thigh muscles after 2 weeks!
there are 2 lovely restaurants nearby who serve great sea food and the hotel restaurant has themed nights. this is a little more expensive but no more than you would pay in a uk city for the quality and volume of food
the only real thing lacking for us was when returning from a trip or on the last shuttle bus the bar was closed from 11pm so no nightcap before retiring which would have been nice

Room Tip: you can upgrade to a pool or spa room but garden villas are stunning, just try and get one in the mi...

We have just returned from a two week stay to the Centara Villas. We stayed during March 2013. The weather at this time of year, is fantastic. There wasn't a drop of rain in the entire two weeks. The sun is fierce though, so take plenty of cream!

So the hotel.. we arrived in the evening and like everyone else on the reviews were met with a refreshing towel and drink. The check in process went smoothly enough and we were very pleased to have ben upgraded to a spa villa, which was a pleasant surprise. The porters took care of our bags and we were in our room within 15 minutes of arriving.

The room itself was well proportioned. The TV, if that suits you, is a modern flat screen, with a fair selection of channels, should you fancy a early evening movie before you go out. The bed is huge. I wouldn't say it was the most comfortable I have ever slept in though. I got the impression that the mattress was a bit old and lumpy. However, the hotel did fit some additional blankets when I asked them if they could resolve it, so can't fault them for that. There are a couple of wardrobes, but storage space wasn't huge. There is a room safe, as usual and a small fridge/mini bar. We didn't use the mini bar, but the maid was happy with us using the fridge to store our own purchased water etc. The bathroom is big too, only a shower in there, but didn't cause us any problems. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom, but no iron in the room. The maid service is perhaps the hotels greatest asset, they are very good. The shower gels etc are replaced twice a day, in the morning and at the evening turndown service. The towels are also replaced as and when you require it. They also provide a electric mosquito repeller in the room, which is a must. Be warned the mosquitoes are ferocious so make sure you bring some anti-histamine tablets, they are definitely required!! The spa on the balcony was nice, but given the cost of upgrading, had we have had to pay, I am not so sure it would have been worth the cost. In general, we found the room to be of a good standard. They provide you with two bottles of water in the morning and replenish them in the evening.

As for the hotel generally. As many people have mentioned before, there are a lot of steps at the resort. It is most definitely not a disabled friendly resort, or for those who struggle with mobility. It didn't bother us, but for some it would be a real problem. There is a real plus of free Wi-Fi. Considering most hotels still charge for this, I found this to be really good. The grounds are maintained really well and there are some good facilities to keep you occupied. If you are thinking of using the fitness centre. I found this to be a really excellent gym. There are a good selection of new cardio machines and a fair selection of resistance equipment.
The only thing, that for me, did get my back up, was the cost at the hotel. It would be true to say that as others have mentioned, the hotel isn't cheap. On everything you buy, you are charged a 10% service charge and then you are charged a further 7% government tax on that. For example, I purchased two ice smoothies on one day They cost 110bht each. The total resulted in being 258bht after all the charges. If you purchased many things over your stay, this would be quite expensive. Also on checkout, I noticed that the final bill was subject to another 7% government tax again. So essentially, you are taxed 14% in total for government tax, plus your service charge. It was no big deal to us, as we didn't spend much at the hotel at all, but it really did annoy me I have to say.

The breakfast at the hotel was good. There are a good selection of breakfast foods to suit all. It would be nice if they could vary the menu a bit though, as exactly the same food was available for the entire two weeks we were there, with no change. I also have to say, I did suspect that some of the breakfast dishes were rehashed from the surplus food from the night before hand. I may be wrong, but if it was, it still tasted nice!

The beach beds and pools were good. There was no shortage of beds and the sea was nice and warm.

As for eating out in the evenings...we ate at the Fisherman's and the Barracuda. Both are very good. I would say the Fisherman's was better in terms of service. The Barracuda was more family run and quirky. We have always gone all inclusive on holidays before, and we were wary of going b & b this time. However, don't be, the value for money at these restaurants far outweighs going full board at the Centara. I would recommend the Thai Pork curry at the Fisherman's it was fantastic!

So, in conclusion I would recommend the hotel. I would have one more observation though, the hotel in places looked 'tired'. I mean in terms of bits of balcony and decking timber rotting away a bit and the varnish flaked off long ago. The pathways were repaired with concrete, which then stood out a bit. It's not a massive deal, but it kind of lets down the general feel of the hotel, so they could benefit from a bit of attention here. The hotel is a quiet area of the island, which was most welcome. The hotel run a good value shuttle service to various places on the island, so I would recommend you take advantage of that.

Dear Simon T,

Thank you for taking your time write about stay with us here at Centara Villas Samui. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and had 'A good experience'.

As the comment of tax & service charge does seem to made often we would like to share the explanation to all readers here on Trip Advisor.

All goods sold within a hotel / resort in Thailand are subject to a VAT (Govt Tax) and any service given by the staff does attract a Service Charge. The practice of pricing items ++ (Tax & Service Charge) is the standard policy for all of the international hotel groups operating in Thailand such as Hilton, Four Seasons, Accor, Intercontinental Hotel Group and Starwood and also the Thai hotel groups such as Amari, Centara and Anantara use this same method.

Your comments for us to improve some areas of the resort that may be looking tired has been noted and we will endeavour to resolve these as quickly as possible. Once again, thank you for taking your time to share your experiences and we do hope that we can be of service again.

Sincerely
The Staff & Management at Centara Villas Samui
