“Beautiful setting with excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

I stayed at this Marriott resort for 5 nights in July. As a Elite member, I already received free wifi but I chose to pay their $25 resort fees to get self-parking and 25% discount on daily breakfast buffet and the Wednesday/Saturday Luau shows plus 2 free Mai Tai drinks. It was worth it. I also received room upgrade to garden and partial ocean view. Breath taking view to wake up to each morning. I had a 2 double bed room with a balcony. The room is spacious and I has a refrigerator you can actually store food in. AC unit works well in our room. Lighting in the hallway is more than sufficient. Front desk was awesome. I requested the "linger longer" checkout option for $99 which extended the check out time to 8pm to accommodate my 11pm flight back to San Francisco. It was well worth it.

Across the street is the King shop where they have a general store, Macy's for swim wears, other to brand name stores in additional to Roy's Restaurant (We ate there 2 nights and both night we ordered their famous MIso Butterfish. It was out of this world.). To the right, it is the Queen shop where they have a larger size of an ABC type of store with gourmet sandwiches, sushi, noodles and everything you can name under the sun. Macaroni Grill is also located in Queen shop. Not to mention the ever popular Starbucks.

I am extremely please with my stay here at the Marriott Resort. I will definitely go back again in the near future.

Room Tip: Be sure to gas up at the King shop before your drive back to the Airport as this is the only gas sta...

This hotel was a lovely, peaceful property with a friendlly staff and nearby shopping for all your needs. The hotel is very clean and the rooms spacious. We had a nice view of the beach area even though it was only a partial ocean view. The rooms are clean and spacious. It is a little out of the way and you will need a car to do Volcano National Park and other sites on the island. But the hotel is really a nice and being out of the city was definitely a plus. The property is kept beautifully and the pool and beach areas were great!

Prior to arrival, I contacted the hotel about some issues, which were addressed promptly and efficiently by manager.
Arrival: bell service prompt and helpful with welcoming smile.
Check-in extra-ordinarily friendly!
Platinum status recognized: certain discounts for BF and pool cabana, complimentary internet, 2 for 1 coffee etc.
We were upgraded to a cabana, a larger room in a small, less modern, separate building overlooking a lava field, and with ocean view from the lanai. Quiet location which was nice, especially when the pool area was crowded.

As said: room was a nice size. It had a fantastic bed, of a quality never before experienced in a hotel. Comfortable love seat. Coffee and tea in room. Small refrigerator.
Large lanai, however, I was a bit disappointed by the rather dirty cushions on the chairs. Used towel to sit on...
With this exception, housekeeping was A+.

Bathroom; old though very clean, high end amenities. Bath tub, separate shower, separate toilet.
The only disadvantage of the cabana rooms in my opinion is the outdoor hallway which easily allows mosquitos into the room. We did catch a few.

The personal touch in this hotel is remarkable. From the manager - even prior to arrival - to the front desk people, the maid, and many other employees, almost every person we dealt with did his/her best to make us happy.
We were especially touched by the nice card and the champagne for our 45th anniversary that were brought into our room as we were settling in. Thank you again!!

The grounds are beautiful: lava grounds, pool area, beach, so much room to spread out.

A few remarks about the pool gounds.
May I suggest some supervision in the pool area: unfortunately, not all hotel guests behave in a desirable way. We saw women smoke under a tree a few yards from the pool deck. Also: a father apparently considered it too far to take his kid to the bathroom, and made him pee behind a bush.
Some of the lounge chairs were broken.

We decided to eat lunch at the restaurant.
Here was the one exception: a surly waittress who deposited two glasses of water on table, did not ask what we wanted to drink, and left. Later returned to take our order for food. The food was served on a styrofoam plate in a basket. Really? A $20.- sandwich on a styrofoam plate? The service was not great, to say the least.

Dinner on the contrary was nice. Service fine, food enjoyable, outdoor seating very pleasant.

It is very convenient that there are two nice, small scale shopping centers within walking distance with shops, restaurants (from Roy's to Subway), and lovely hula performances.
Tip: visit the Hapuna Beach Prince lounge, around sun down, overlooking the bay, and order a lava flow. Nowhere better!

We always love to return to the Big Island, and will very likely stay at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott next time.

A big mahalo to all who made our stay special!

Room Tip: Select cabana if you like peace and quiet, and don't mind the occasional mosquito. Big enough t...

We have stayed at the Fairmont in Waikoloa and the Sheraton and Royal Kona Resort in Kona prior to this trip to the Mariott.

We stayed here due to the location by the beach and the good price that we received on Priceline, and we had a good experience overall.

The highlight of the hotel are the pools and the beach. There is a large infinity pool near the hotel, with a sandy-bottom pool further out. There are two fish ponds with a nice path between them out to the beach. A Bay is incredible and has nice reefs for snorkeling. The hotel rents kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel equipment, etc. on the beach.

Everything at the hotel is fairly pricey. They charge a $25 per day resort fee which covers parking and gives discounts at the hotel restaurant. We didn't have a car but were still charged the entire fee. Be aware of this and add it into the price of the hotel, as it isn't optional.

The food at the restaurant is good, but most things cost $30-$40 a plate. There are some specials, however, such as 50% off on Tuesdays and a happy hour that has some decent deals. The luau was really entertaining a pleasant (but, again, pricey at $170 for the two of us including the resort fee "discount").

My wife made two trips to the spa and absolutely loved it. Her second visit was 50% off. She also used the showers there after swimming as she liked the facilities there so much.

The room was fine. It had a separated bathroom area, a refrigerator, a TV with cable (but no movie or premium cable options), and a very pleasant balcony. Room service times varied greatly. We arrived back at our room at 3 pm one time and the room still had not been made.

There were ping pong tables, a volleyball net, a wonderful covered seating area with a coffee shop on the lobby level overlooking the pool and water. There is also a nice trail for running or walking that extends north from the beach. It goes for miles to the north along the water, and is a beautiful place to watch a sunset or go for a morning stroll.

There is a nice fitness center with a good number of cardio machines, but not much in the way of weights. There is also a set of ropes, monkey bars, pullup bars, etc. near the volleyball court on the north side of the beach, near the start of the waterfront trail.

There is some nice shopping nearby at both the King and Queens shops as well as restaurants both expensive and inexpensive... all that we tried were quite good.

All in all, we had a great time there. The rooms were above average, and the lounge, pools, spa and beach were absolutely amazing!

Room Tip: Some of the mountain view rooms (those on the north side of the hotel) have a view of the ocean from...

Marriott categorizes this hotel as Category 7, but there is nothing 'category 7' about this hotel, except the location. In fact, calling this Category 7, Marriott is doing a disservice to other "true category 7" hotels.

PROS:
- Excellent location on the A-bay and walkable access to the beach
- Decent swimming pools, although not big enough and get very crowded at times
- Close to shopping centers (5-min walk and food courts)
- Friendly staff and employees (but don't follow thru or are reliable)

CONS:
- Fundamentally, the hotel doesn't seem to be "service or customer-oriented"; instead they are "rule or policy-driven". Unfortunately, different families had different policies on different days.
- First, I don't have a problem with "daily resort free of $25"; but if it is "mandatory" why not just include it in the room rate, increase the room rate and make the room-rate all inclusive?
- Why not leave the towels by the pool or closer to the beach? On some days, guests had to walk thru the restaurant and lobby, across to the "bell boy" on the other side of the hotel to just get pool towels.
- Some days, guests had to "sign" to get pool towels. Other days, guests could just grab the towels without interacting with anyone.
- Checkin process was extremely slow; even during peak checkin hours, there were barely 2 or 3 staffs struggling to help. Booked an ocean-view room but was placed in a courtyard-view room with "token" views of some water, behind other buildings. Front desk changed the room, but the new room too had only a partial view of the ocean. We explicitly told the front desk to make sure the bellman brings the luggage to the right room; but after an hour the bellman shows up in the wrong room. Front desk never even bothered to let the bell man know about the room change.
- Which hotel - even Category 1 - starts the loud lawn-mower tractors and leaf blowers right in the middle of morning breakfast, and right next to the breakfast tables? And wake up guests before 9am on a vacation with those loud noises?
- Restaurant: Ordinary food with extraordinary prices. Waitresses who never showed up at the pool after promising to be right back in a few minutes.
- Morning Breakfast: Long waits all over even with short lines because they didn't staff adequately even during the holiday week.
- Verify your billing as the breakfast place charged different rates on different days.
- Was told that Marriott Rewards members will not be credited for points but will get credited for night-stays (since this was part of a vacation package). Turned out, they didn't credit anything in the end.

The staff seems genuine and friendly but they sure need to be trained a lot to effective at customer service, billing management, issue resolution and anticipating peak rush hours.

Room Tip: Check with the front-desk to show the room from the lobby area (lounge). Often, ocean-view rooms are...

We stayed at this resort for a week. The staff were extremely responsive and made us feel right at home. Our room was comfortable and roomy (decent sized mini fridge, large bathroom, sofa and chair, wonderful view of the sunset from our balcony). The pools and pool area were very clean and nice. There is a great trail that runs along the coast - if you like walking, you will be very pleased! Snorkling at the nearby beach was just okay, but if you go out in the early morning you will see (from standing on the beach) sea turtles wandering in very shallow water. The breakfast buffet is outstanding; restaurant and bar menus are also quite good. If you like shopping, there are a lot of high-end shops withing walking distance. It was quiet at night - I generally slept well.
My only complaints (and they are very minor ones) are that the outside stairwells were not well maintained - debris sat around for days without being cleaned up. Also the carpet in the hallways was in need of cleaning and some of the wallpaper was coming up at the seams (probably because of the humidity). I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to a friend.

Room Tip: ocean front, ocean view and pool view rooms are all on the same side - all face the same gorgeous su...

Staying here now.
The hotel is very clean and the rooms look very nice. The pools are nice and ocean is close by. Shops are in walking distance and quite quaint. Great if you are here for business cause someone else is paying.
Now the negatives. In our case.
In front of patio door our carpet was soaking wet and spongy. Housekeeping said they could put heat on it however it would warm up room. Also if you checked the corners of room you see the black mold.
We went to the restaurant at 3:00 for their happy hour special. Twenty minutes after we put in our order, we were asked to move to the bar and they would serve us there. It was already 20 min and we had not received even water, so we said we would move. However the 3 other tables that put in orders were okay. The drinks came after 25 min and it took a while for appetizer, but the bill came at the same time. Of the 4 tables we were the last to arrive and first to be rushed out. Over priced and very small portions, end up leaving and going next door to eat. We are not impressed with the service, food and portions.
The location is 35 miles from downtown, however everything you need is in the area. The views, pool and ocean are great. The sunset in Hawaii are great from all locations.
Also only certain people pay resort fee and get discounts on Luaus. So be careful who you book with.
Not coming back to this hotel.
