“A few things I wasn't expecting . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

I tend to agree with most of the comments here about the hotel. Depending on what you were expecting, the hotel is very nice, not very good, too expensive, or a bargain.

My expectations were a little bit lower than others might have had. Comparing it to the other resorts, it did seem a little cheaper (relatively), so I was expecting that meant the hotel would not be as nice. I was pleasantly surprised. Here are a few other things that surprised me about the hotel and the area, in no particular order.

1) The infinity pool was very nice. Better than the pictures show.

2) A Bay had decent snorkeling. There is a layer of thick rocks just inside the water line, making it a little difficult to get out into the bay from the beach. However, once you are past that line of rocks, you are not far from coral and fish.

3) It was windy! One of the staff told me that they sometimes refer to Waikoloa as "WaikoBlowa."

4) The resort is very close to to King's Court and the Queen's Marketplace. This means you are not really tied to the hotel restaurant (which seemed very expensive). There really aren't that many other restaurant options in the immediate area.

5) It is a good 30 minute drive to Kona. For various reasons, we wound up in Kona each day.

6) We had a King Bed with a fold out couch. It worked, but with the couch folded out, there was not very much room to work.

7) The hotel is arranged in a way to give the Ocean View rooms a decent view, making an upgrade to an oceanfront room less dramatic.

8) The kids didn't like the pool slide that much. They only did it once.

9) No wifi in the rooms. There is apparently wifi in the lobby, but I never got it to work very well.

10) The lanai was nice but a little small.

Overall, I was happy with the choice.

This was our second stay at the Waikaloa Marriott- it is a wonderful place to stay and enjoy. The staff goes above and beyond to meet every need. They are so warm, friendly and helpful. Everyone there is so helpful and kind - especially Dayson at the front desk, Michael at the Hawaii Calls restaurant and Kean at the valet desk. The rooms are comfortable and clean- with a view that you never want to leave. It never feels crowded here - except maybe in the pool right at 3 pm. The restaurant Hawaii Calls is delicious and has a beautiful view of the beach and the palm trees swaying.

From checking in to a room with a pool and ocean view, this was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Any service we requested : extra pillows, towels, soap, etc was delivered with amazing speed! Everybody was very service oriented. The beach is very average as it may be fake, with no support from the hotel. The pools very busy, but we got around that by holding umbrellas and beach chairs by 830 am! Not enough restaurants on site, but short walk to many more restaurants, dinner or breakfast. Grocery stores are nearby and you can buy water offsite. I gave it a 5 star for the wonderful infinity pool which is heated! Property is very clean. Make sure to do the concierge walk on Friday mornings at 8 am, see the petroglyphs and house ruins on the property and soak in the sunset. I want to thank the general manager for sending a broth day cake for my little ones celebration. Keep up the great work, we will be back soon!

The Waikoloa is amazing from the moment you walk into the airy and beautiful lobby. I cannot say enough about our stay. Each member of the staff went out of their way to help us enjoy our stay. The pools and beaches were so quiet and enjoyable. You could totally relax here. The rooms were new and very clean. We had a deluxe ocean front room, and every day I was amazed by the sunrise and the sunset from the balcony. The restaurant was delicious, and again, service was stellar. I would highly recommend this to individuals, couples, families with older children. Pool area was very relaxing, always plenty of room to sit and swim, no hassles anywhere. Great spa, very quiet. We paid so much more for our resort stay on Maui, and this was hands down the better of the two.

Room Tip: You have to get an ocean view or ocean front to truly appreciate the location.

Our stay at Waikoloa Bch Marriott was great. It's a short drive from the airport and we decided to make this our first three nights on vacation to get on island time. It's a great spot especially when sandy beaches are hard to find on the BI. If we wanted to explore more we could walk to along the beach all the way to the other resorts up the coast. We really really enjoyed the lanai facing the ocean and watching the sunset through the palm trees. There's a little market and shopping plaza within walking distance. Get coffee across the street it's WAY more affordable than at the coffee shop in the lobby. We didn't eat at the Marriott so can't really give any suggestions there. It's a great option if you're looking for a sandy beach front option with a view of the ocean!

Room Tip: Some of the Garden rooms still give you a sneak peak of the ocean if you don't want to spend the...

We stayed at this hotel for a few days. The staff is AMAZING! We ate at the bar lounge for a few dinners and the food was delicious. The pool area is wonderful and there are plenty of chairs available. Our room was very nice overlooking the garden view. We will definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed here during our first visit to the BI and had a very nice time. The resort is in a convenient location to the airport but far from Volcano National park. All of the staff (bartenders, waiters, front desk) were extremely friendly and accommodating, The pools were beautiful and the beach area was clean. If you stay at the resort, make sure you spend one night going next door to the restaurant at the Lava Lava Beach club. The food was the best we've had in Hawaii. Make sure you get a reservation at sunset and sit on the beach. You won't be disappointed!!
