“Very resort-like”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012

Stayed here for our first few days on the big island. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and we had a fridge. The view was of the pool as we were only on the second floor despite requesting a "high floor". Service here was excellent and courteous. The location on the beach was nice with a great view for watching the sunset. My problem with this place is that it is built in a tourist oasis in the middle of a barren lava field. Waikoloa beach seems to be this over-done tourist Mecca that would look like the surrounding countryside (black lava) but for the careful landscaping, watering and architecture. In one word the surroundings are "fake". And the price is that of an expensive resort plus some. Lunch cost us over $50 but was pretty good. Watch the mixed drinks, they run you a mint and are VERY strong (got unintentionally drunk off of half a glass). One major upside is the breakfast. Opt for the buffet as it has EVERYTHING you can imagine. A great omelette bar, loads of fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, the worlds best banana bread, fresh juices, yoghurt, oatmeal, cereals, many breakfast meats, homefries and even rice and veggies. Basically anything you could possibly want. Everything is fresh, the coffee is delicious and the staff are very pleasant.

Marriott lived up to my expectations, rooms were excellent and clean. Loved the bed and pillows! Pool and hotel surroundings were beautiful. Location was great- Kings shops were just across the property. Service was good. Downsides were poor sporadic wifi connection. Dinner in hotel restaurant was ok but expensive. Look elsewhere for meals....

Had I not walked over to Hilton, Marriott would have been a 5*. Comparatively, Hilton is massive and definitely impressive. I get why other reviewers complained about the length of time required to walk just from their rooms to the carpark. It is enormous! But come on who would be in a hurry to get anywhere in this idyllic island!!
Thoughts of wishing I had chosen the Hilton instead crossed my mind ... Hence the 4*

We just returned from 5 nights at the Marriott Waikoloa. This is going to be a mixed review, but ultimately we knew what we were getting into when we booked here.

Our travel party of 6 was made up of: Parents, 2 kids (8 and 5), and 1 set of grandparents. We therefore needed 2 rooms. This alone ruled out many of the more expensive properties on the island. Further, we wanted a kid friendly pool, and some typical hotel amenities. All signs pointed to the Marriott.

As others have stated, the property is in need of an update, both physical and cultural. For example, in the lobby there are 2 nice carafes of pineapple infused water, yet there are no cups. Instead you will find a stack of those cheap little paper cones that hold approximately 2 ounces of fluid.

The lobby is spacious and clean. There is a small coffee shop adjacent, although it never seemed to be open past noon. There are plenty of comfy chairs nearby that offer great views to the ocean. We were told this is the place where wifi is available.

Our smallish ocean front room was in the Ka‘ahumanu wing which was closer to the ocean across the ponds. Our second room was ocean view. An added benefit of this inside room was the view over the pool area. However, this room felt even smaller since the exterior wall was angled to allow for the stair step mini lanai’s. The bathrooms are motel style. Don’t expect any privacy as there is a large air gap at the base of the door.

I enjoy sitting outside with my laptop, so I would highly recommend bringing a longer cable that will reach if that is your plan.

The grounds, on the other hand are great. Although getting preferred seating was a bit competitive, especially if you want to be close to one of the “fixed in place” umbrellas. They also have this silly “towel card” system which was neither enforced nor sufficiently explained. In my opinion, they should trust that their customers are not there to steal their mediocre beach towels. Again, more opportunity for a culture upgrade.

Pool service is prompt and polite.

Pros:
Affordable rooms
Nice, kid friendly pools
Excellent breakfast buffet, well worth getting it included in your room package.
Great proximity to other Waikoloa shops
Friendly, helpful staff

Cons:
Tiny rooms
Motel type shower/tub configuration
Wired internet
Tubed Televisions
Low quality linens
No mattress pads
No sense of being at a 5 star resort.

Overall, this was a fabulous place to stay and met our needs perfectly. We took the deficiencies in stride, and enjoyed the property for what it was. Would we stay here again? Maybe, but only if our travel circumstances were the same.

The location was right in the heart of shopping centers and restaurants. The only downside to that is everything is very expensive in this area. The hotel was very nice and clean with friendly staff. There are many services offered at the facility; I just wasn't there long enough to use them. There is a spa on site, but the prices are bit high compared to mainland prices. I stepped right out of my room to a small garden and just around the corner of the building was an amazing view for sunset. They have a luau on certain evenings right outside with great ocean views. There is a beach with water activities available to schedule if you choose. There are beach chairs in place on the beach for conveneince of the guests. There are several pools on site which are heated. There is a sand-bottom kids pool for the little kids who just want to play around, but the regular pool is just over the very short wall so the adults can see. There are at least 2 hot tubs that are physically joined to the regular pool. Many palm treas surround the pool with torch lights and live music at night. If I had to pick a place on the big island to stay and had money to spare, this would probably be the place. I was very happy with the place. An honest mistake was made on my bill initially but they staff took care of it with no problem and all was well. They have vallet for just 3 dollars per day charge to the room. For a 25-dollar "activity fee" you get access to self park and internet access in the room.

Room Tip: name your price on priceline for a 4-star for a chance at better prices on the kona side of the isla...

I stayed 4 nights for a business meeting
And brought my boyfriend with me. He wasn't attending the meeting but I woke him up every morning because there is a glass window between the bathroom and the head of the bed, so it was impossible for me to shower & dress without blasting him in the face with light. The room was small and awkwardly configured with a tiny lanai.

With regards to service, I had to call for bath towels (they gave us only one) and the last morning when I could have really used that in room coffee, they only left decaf.

Have they ever heard of WiFi? I paid for in room Internet only to discover that it was a wired connection that couldn't connect to my iPad.

For the price you are better off at a cheap motel in Kona. You can drive to better beaches.

First time to the Big Island and felt like I stepped into a nuclear aftermath. I was not prepared for the black lava rock that surrounds everything. Checking into the hotel, the staff were very friendly and the resort has a relax feel to it. My initial impression of our ocean view room was that it look tired and could do witth a face lift. This aside, the room was comfortable and clean. The resort grounds are well kept with a beautiful lava rock pool area separating the beach from the resort. This is one of the few resorts in this area with a sand beach that you can go in for a dip. Sea turtles can also be found sleeping on the beach. I enjoyed my 4 day stay.

It's not the Hilton Waikoloa but it is a beautiful resort. Loved the pools and jacuzzis. The staff was very polite and extremely helpful.

If you love prime rib and crab, don't miss out on the buffet :) Too bad we missed it, seems like everyone was enjoying the feast. Just be sure to make a reservation, it gets packed!

Overall, great stay :) Be sure to tell James and Alika at the valet/bell-hop stand Aloha from Kyäni-T :)
