“Doesn't feel like a Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

We stayed here in the begining of February. We did not do prior reservation just on our road trip we picked this hotel.
Location: Very beautiful property on the beach. There are good walking sand on the beach to enjoy a long walk.
Rooms: The Hotel is very big due to the building not high but long.Funny way,we needed to take 3 elevators to the room. The lobby at the 8th floor but went you arrive the lobby at street level. Then need to go to 2nd floor and walk to the other end to go to 5th floor wich is not the 5th just the 3rd level,so abit confusing.Luckily we run into one housekeeper lady few times so she gave us directions. No one else did. We did not get any information where to go to eat so we were wondering around for a while to discover this property.
Pool: Heated nothing other special around.Personally I prefer pools with some plants around or island in the middle ,this was just a regular pool but enjoyable.
Food:The beach/pool bar had good food and service.Ocean terrace had Crab buffet.THIS WAS THE BEST EVER.Top class.

Room Tip: Definetely close to the lobby if you don't want to get lost.

What an outstanding hotel to reside at while exploring the big island. We had such a wonderful view of the ocean and the hotel pool from the balcony of our room. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the evenings where we able to keep the doors open and only close the provided sliding screen doors, which allowed us to listen throughout the night of the waves crashing onto the beachfront. We did not have to use the AC at all as it was always with a adequate breeze. The hotel rooms were outstanding and the bed was one of the most comfortable that we had slept in. The food in the restaurants was a bit overpriced, which is why I only rated it a very good otherwise the hotel would be rated an outstanding 5. The hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful and so peaceful, you feel like you have the place all to yourself. Highly recommend this hotel for couples, new and old as a place to renew/rejuvenate. Also a good family location as well, especially the nice beach and swimming pool area.

Room Tip: Southside rooms are quiet, but most rooms offer a good view of the ocean and beachfront. We had a oc...

Beautiful hotel!
lovely big rooms! Nice decks on them.
Grand views and beach! Restful and quite.
Not one aloha from any staff during our stay!! (front desk, maids, pool or bar people)
The only ones who were helpful were in the computer/ office area.
They couldn't have been more helpful.
When I asked to do you have a shuttle to the Mauna Kea,I got an eye roll and" not in two years!".
Someone else said it was a long way to rooms and beach and we are walkers, it still was a long way for us.
Sister resort the Mauna Kea had a totally different feel, everyone greeted us with an Aloha.
Wonderful breakfast and views. Staff smiled and was welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for one closer to the entrance if you don't want to walk forever.

Read lots of reviews on this place pre arrival. No idea what ppl expect from a hotel/resort because this place is great. Yes it's big but that's a good thing! The hotel was full during our stay but it never felt crowded. From our balcony looking across the ocean you would think we had the place to ourselves. The pool is excellent, but having to drop the towels back at the pool deck is silly? Surely they can be left in the room.

Didn't eat a lot at the hotel. Lots of options short drives north and south. But pool bar food is good and can be taken to the room or the grassed area. Cafe hapuna is an excellent idea. Pretty good coffee and snacks. Pizza and sushi good. All staff were friendly and happy to help, a manager even brought in her own kettle from home so we could have one in our room to sterilise our baby's bottles (the hotel should probably have kettles?)

Lot of little public areas to sit and relax and look at he views. Whales visible most days.

Overall a great hotel in perfect location.

Room Tip: We stayed in building 5 which was attached to lobby. Very convenient for lobby. Pool etc. Also atten...

We stayed here two years ago and like before we still love the hotel, area and the service. Rooms are large, clean and have great views. There were swells in the ocean so the red flag was out and the waves sounded so nice at night hitting the beach. We did not use the AC but kept the slider and inner door open. Dinner at sunset was also very good. Pool and beach area are full of chairs. Lifeguards did a great job of having chairs and umbrellas out on the beach. This is trully a piece of paradise. We will be going back !!

Room Tip: Get ocean front or ocean view.

We stayed here late last year for a week and it was a wonderful experience. The beach view is gorgeous. The guest room was spacious and it faces the ocean. It was a very laid back experience. The staff was pleasant and polite except for the concierge lady who seemed impatient. I wished she was more friendly and helpful. I think she treats you depending on how well to do you are since I see her treating some guests nicer than others. And when it came to us, the feeling was she wanted to get us out of her way as soon as possible. The resort has a sister hotel Mauna Kea in which you can visit as a guest. I feel that Hapuna Beach is more Hawaiian in personality and glad we picked Hapuna Beach over Mauna Kea.

Since the opening we stayd once or twice a year. The last time ,was the last time. There was a shuttle to the Mauna Kea hotel so you had a choice of restautants and beach. There was an exchange library at the bar. No more.On the beach the trash cans are running over, half the showers did not work,Beach lounges and tables are worn out hand-me-downs ftom the Mauna Kea Some broken ones are still under the trees ( should be in a dump ). So are the patio tables at the rooms. The pool bar is not bad. Do not order a Pizza from the lobby coffee shop. It will be soggy and even after I complained I got no answer from management and the next time it was just as bad. The personnel is trying very hard but thy need on-hand management.
Broken fixtures, paint peeling etc. It ain't what it used to be !!!!

Room Tip: upgrade. The ground floor has bugs, mice, cats and sometimes turkys have afight on your patio.
