“Nice Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

I recently strayed for four nights and had a great time. The grounds are very well taken care of, the views are awesome, and even though it is a huge resort there are lots of places to find peace and quiet, especially after 8pm. The pool is very large and the Jacuzzi is nice and hot.

My wife loved the bed and the size of the bathroom.

One of the nicest sandy beaches on the Kona Coast is Hapuna Beach, and the shore break is fun to play in but you have to be very careful when the waves start to get big. The Northern swells in the winter rap around and they crash only about 20 yards from the shore. It was thunderous our first night, but wonderful and impressive at the same time.

The food selections are decent, the breakfast area is great, the pool bar is also great and the little café for sandwiches is a great way to save money. I was a little disappointed by the presentation of the food at Japanese restaurant (even though the service was awesome) and the signature fine dining restaurant failed to impress me. Fortunately, the Mauna Lani Resort is an easy drive and has a great variety of restaurants that seems to be much more available even in the busier seasons.

The valet people are super friendly and great with directions and housekeeping had impeccable timing and kept the room clean and tidy. The front desk was also very nice. I remember we tried to get a hot water kettle in the room because we don’t; like the taste of coffee in our tea and there was nothing available. I was quite surprised since it is usually and easy request for most other hotels I have stayed at, but we drank our coffee/tea with great joy as we watched the sunset from out lanai over the Hapuna Beach.

Mahalo to all the staff….and get a kettle!

Room Tip: Building #4 is at the end and out of the way. Super Quiet

This is a private and beautiful resort located next to one of the prettiest beaches on the island.
We loved the convenience of being able to walk right from your room to excellent snorkeling.
There is also good access to hiking there, and they have yoga classes outdoors along the beach.
They have a great, if challenging golf course---you lose a lot of balls in the lava.
The rooms are on the small side, but have everything you need and great views.
Excellent star gazing too.
There are several good but exp rest. there, and it's there are not a lot of other places nearby.
you'll want to rent a car.

Pros
Very stunning property on an amazing beach. The staff were excellent, we were greeted and served guava juice right away. Our room was perfect, our sliding doors opened up into one of the garden areas where we made friends with the cats. We may or may not have fed them weaners.
Really comfy beds, we slept great. It was really quiet at night.
We were given a bit of a late check out with no problem 1pm instead of 11am.

Cons
This is a large property with only 1 modest pool, they were jack hammering the pool deck both days we were there. There was no escape from the noise, not even on the beach. The surf was too rough to swim so we would of liked to of spent more time in the pool.
Resort fees suck and this place knows how to milk it. There literally is nowhere else to park so you pay $15.00 Want to check your flight? $11.50 for 24 hours of wifi.
Food was very very pricey and the resort is pretty isolated so take lots of snacks.

I would recommend this place in a heartbeat just be aware of all the extra costs.

Great location - located on one of the best beaches on the island. Facilities are pretty good, our room was expensive but very nice. The one flaw was the sofa sleeper that had a two inch foam mattress that no one would want to sleep on - we ordered a rollaway.

The food was way below par for a hotel of this caliber. The macademia nut fish had some anonymous breading with not a sliver of mac nuts. The breakfast buffet lacked much local fruit - even the papaya seemed old. One night there was no where to get an evening drink outdoors as the one bar was rented to a private party.

Overall it seems to be a wonderful location and good quality structure run by a poor and apathetic management team. For the price of staying here, I expected more.

Room Tip: Ask about the rooms. We were initially put in a dark ground level unit by the (noisy) pool and went...

One step into the lobby of HBPH and you know it is going to be a special experience. I don't think I have ever seen a more beautiful view from a lobby. Actually, no matter where you stand there seems to be a beautiful view. We had a wonderful time and even looked forward to getting up for the breakfast just to sip coffee while over looking the Pacific. When the beach got windy, we sat on top of the cliff overlooking the cove. By the way, the cove had some great snorkeling and you are almost guaranteed to see sea turtles. You have to drive a good distance just to get off the property, let alone to get anywhere on the Big Island but you might not want to leave any way.

Room Tip: Hard to get a bad room. Ocean front puts you much closer to the beach but the further back you are...

First time to Hawaii, decided to visit island of Kona with our two children under the ages of 3.
We stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and were not disappointed. Great location at one of the best beaches. Got upgraded from a ocean view to a ocean front room. Had direct view of the beach and loved the sound of the waves at night.
Overall experience at the hotel was great but the room service food is not the greatest. Reason why we only did breakfast at the hotel and ate out. Definately need a car, so you can drive around. Some restaurants to visit are Red Cafe Grill at Waimea and Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae and Merriman has two locations.

Will definately recommend to do a charter by Endless Summer Charters. We did the Dolpin encounter unfortuanly didnt see any but saw two hump back whales which was just amazing and got to snorkell. Captain Brian is a great guy very accomodating he provides drinks and food when you book a charter, his contact is 808-989-7876.

The hilton waikoala has a dolphin lagoon, we did a session with our little ones where you get to touch and feed a dolphin. Expensive but it was the high season and everything is expensive in Hawaii. Will definately go back soon.

My husband and I were married on the Big Island and recently returned to celebrate our anniversary. We stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince hotel. We consulted Trip Advisor before making our selection and generally have similar positive comments, as well as similar negative feedback regarding various add on charges, limited restaurant options on-site or near by...Our suggestion would be, like anything, do your research, no what you're in for and then move on with no regrets. We upgraded our room to an ocean front view which was wonderful. While much is written about the distance between the lobby and some rooms, this really isn't as bad as is made out to be (if you're ably mobile). We had a rental car so did eat "off campus" most nights and quite a bit of savings.

Overall, a wonderful Anniversary trip. Our main sadness of the trip was the commercialization of A-Bay (Anaeho'omalu Bay) beach. When we got married on the beach (just me, my husband, the photographer and officiant) it was so intimate - now there's a restaurant and pricy cabins - we were told by the restaurant what was "public beach" and what was their private property - literally a "line in the sand" was drawn....
