Attended a professional conference held at the adjacent property (Fairmont Orchid) and stayed at the Mauna Lani as the block of rooms at the Fairmont had booked up. The properties are affiliated but are different. The Mauna Lani is less crowded, more open and less 'resort like'. Both however are beautiful. They share two golf course. I'm not a golfer but I could still appreciate the spectacular vistas.
We arrived at night after about a 30 min rental care drive from the Kona airport so we could't appreciate the view from the window. The view the next morning was truly amazing, just what a tropical resort looking at onto the North Pacific should be. We ate sunset dinners at both resorts and would have to give the nod to the restaurant at the Orchid, but not by much. Make dinner reservations before you travel to assure a seat for a memorable sunset. Nothing is cheap at either resort, but you already knew that if you're reading these reviews.
