I booked this for my wife and I last minute but it didn't matter! Lovely Helen at the check-in counter got us into a beautiful room with a view of the ocean and the turtle pool. We also had several travel related issues with no flights out of Kona and having to return the Avis rental car at an airport different to the one we were flying out of - all of which Helen was able to help us with. Well done Helen! Couldn't have been happier.
The hotel is spectacular and the facilities wonderful. We only had the one night and morning really but managed to squeeze a wonderful dip in the ocean, along with some laps at the fitness centre and a workout on quality equipment all of which was so easy to get to with the complimentary Trek hybrid bikes. We finished our stay up with some great coffees and confirmed our onward details with the free wifi. I would definitely go back.

We stayed here two years ago and couldn't think of staying somewhere else for our trip this year. We splurged for an ocean view room and were not disappointed as we had a room on the top floor overlooking the pool area with also the gorgeous view of the beach/ocean area with our favorite snorkel spot further in the distance. The staff was genuinely friendly and did everything to make our stay wonderful. The concierge, Desiree, was extremely helpful and patient with our many questions and inability to make a decision on dinner (she was the one who recommened the pork ribs at the Canoe House that we ended up loving).

As this was our third hotel stay on our trip, we took advantage of the free self service laundry our first night there which was very convienient. Upon arrival we were given a coupon to for a free appitizer at the Canoe house (if dining in...turns out only had to purchase one full dinner) and couldn't recommend the pork ribs enough. We ended up going back another night for another round. We just lov the relaxed walk to the snorkel spot and had lunch twice at the restaurant near there (enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich there).

The room was very clean and bed extremely comfortable. Really I can't say enough good things about our stay here for the second time. Hopefully we can make it back sometime soon!

Although I was on business, I did find some relaxation time. The property is older but extremely well maintained - much of the staff has been working there for over 15+ years and are more than willing to share their Hawaiian heritage with you! The daily activities are nearly endless, the pool is clean & clear - the snorkeling is WONDERFUL & gear is clean & great! I've stayed at several properties along this coast & this is a nice quiet property -- not a zoo & there is a shuttle to take you to small shopping center. If you need a car, you can rent a Budget right on property. The rooms & bathrooms are very large, there is an empty refrigerator and they are well furnished - they are cleaned in a timely manner with lots of towels!

They will be doing some restaurant renovations but for now, the Grill is still open (10/2012) and the Bay Terrace is good - the Coffee Shop is great and the Canoe House is one of the best restaurants on the island (yum). There are also 3-4 nice places to eat at The Shops - so you won't go hungry. There are beautiful fish ponds that wind thru the hotel & around the property and a 2-3 mile walking path -- VERY safe. They also have comp bikes for hotel guests. The Spa, Fitness Center & Tennis courts are amazing -- especially the lava spa! Wow & warm, as the Spa is built into the lava field ... again amazing!

Room Tip: Pool & ocean view combo are well worth any extra you might pay. Above the 3rd floor is probably...

The property is extremely well kept. We read some reviews stating the property was suffering from deferred maintenance; everything was very well kept in our opinion. The staff are very attentive without being pushy. Based on our very limited observation of other nearby properties the Mauna Lani is clearly the more quiet and luxurious. Note that everything on the island is expensive and the Mauna Lani is even more so as it is a high end property. We ate off property more often than not. The food on the property was very good; just very expensive. Snorkeling within the Mauna Lani resort was exceptional; some of the best kept coral we've seen even compared to French Polynesia.

The one complaint we have is the charge for internet. I don't recall the last time I paid for internet access even at roadside motels and certainly not at a property of this price. IMO management has made a really bad choice and will be punished on boards like this until they wise up.

Having said this, if or when we return to the Big Island we would definitely stay at the Mauna Lani again.

Just got back from six night stay at mauna lani hotel. From first reservations phone call to last check out this hotel DELIVERED. amazing location on quiet still lagoon surrounded by Hawaiian fish ponds and black volanic rock. Really good food. Rooms very clean and tastefully appointed in relaxing chic style.
The treasure of this hotel are the people who work there. True service. Smiling faces. We were blown away by the feeling of ohana here. We had pool view room close to elevators. Bit loud in afternoon but who cared. View was to die for. Never turned on A/C. lovely breezes. Tons of birds. Beach club beach is lovely. Great snorkeling there. Do have a Mai tai. I had two and still haven't fully recovered. Lol. If you are a casual Hawaiian visitor who doesn't like all that glitz and glitter or high prices then this hotel is for you. Excellent value for money here. Fine attention to detail. Lovely grounds and fish ponds. Whole resort has other worldly relaxing peaceful vibe. True zen. Epic relaxation. Loved it

A really lovely hotel in a relaxing and quiet area of the island. It is near Kona airport being only a 30 minute drive and is near a small shopping center containing a really good Roys. The rooms are a good size with plenty of hanging space and the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are clean and well furnished and the bathrooms are a good size and have 2 sinks which is always useful. The shower heads are a little dated and so the flow is not always the best however they work perfectly fine.
In the bungalows there is a whirlpool bath as well as a big walk in shower and each one contains a king sized bedroom and a double room with 2 queen sized beds. The bungalow rooms also have 2 walk in cupboards each and contain good sized safes. They also have kitchens with stocked fridges (though these do not seem to be restocked during the stay there) and a large living/dining area. There is an outside area with plenty of seating, and a personal hammock, pool and hot tub and the views are fantastic. The bungalows are a little dated however they are being done up at the moment.
The buffet breakfast is extremely good with a large selection and the choice of having an omelette cooked fresh for you every morning there is also an a la carte menu as well and the breakfast staff are extremely friendly.
The hotel does also have beautiful grounds and a private beach. There are fish ponds and turtle ponds within both the hotel and in the grounds. It also a distinctly non-chain hotel feel about it which is nice and different and it feels very relaxing being there. There is also a gym, tennis courts and a great spa at the hotel. Overall it is a lovely hotel and it has not changed much over the years even most of the staff is the same which gives it a distinctly homely and friendly feel.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms or partial ocean rooms have amazing views.

I love this hotel. The fish ponds, the beach, the snorkeling, the service.... It's pricy, but worth it. I wish I never had to leave! If you stay towards the end of the month, you can observe the monthly checkup of the green sea turtles (honu) they're fostering (typically on Wednesdays). It's also well worth it to go on the fish feeding tour. Pi'i ("the fish guy") is amazing, as is Danny (the cultural director). They made the stay more special than we could've even imagined.

Room Tip: Stay oceanfront if you can! We booked the standard room ($225) then upgraded for ($75/ night) when w...
