There are very few sun-filled regions that can offer as much variety in accommodations as the Caribbean. From small and modest inns to large, full service chain hotels, the region boasts something to fit every taste.
Round Hill is for the romantic, the type of traveller who understands that enduring quality, service and tradition are like precious jewels to be cherished in today's travel world. Originally started as a club by a well-to-do Jamaican of British descent, Round Hill has never lost site of why it appeals to so many people year after year after year.
Yes, the hotel is known as a quiet enclave of the well-healed and rightfully so. But it also caters to any traveller who understands and appreciates the timeless elegance of an era that is all but bygone. The service is impeccable, overseen by Josef Forstmayr and Omar Robinson, world class hoteliers (both graduates of the prestigious school of hotel administration at Cornell) who make each guest feel as though they are members of a small club - which Round Hill actually is.
The ambiance is graceful and elegant in a decidedly unstuffy and unpretentious way. Guest naturally meet and mingle over cocktails in the evening, at the beach barbecue, on the small but wonderful beach or at the extraordinary pool. The physical property is absolutely first rate, ranging from villas that would rival any in the region (or even the world) to the rooms in the hotel that are lovely, quite comfortable and an unbelievable value in the summertime particularly. The view from the infinity edge pool is intoxicating. For those who might need a liquid kickstart ,the pool bar is about three steps away, while the beach bar is perhaps fifty yards away (with the cocktail bar being perhaps twenty or thirty yards beyond that). And given the service all over the property, going thirsty is not even an option.
The cuisine is quite wonderful, from a beautiful breakfast to tasty lunches, to tea, biscuits and sandwiches all the way through dinner. Several nights a week, there is a theme for dinner including a beach barbecue one night as well as another night with limbo dancers and other local entertainment. There is also piano music in the open air cocktail bar that has been done in a style reminiscent of the early days of the hotel.
Being a property owner, Mr Ralph Lauren has overseen much of the decoration of the hotel and common areas and his vision completely captures the understated glamour of a seaside club and resort that has been forgotten by the neon-fountain palaces that are so common these days. The ambiance is one of good taste, relaxation and refinement without any airs of snobbery or gauche excess.
We have toured several of the villas and they are stunning indeed. Any family wanting the space or privacy, not to mention the luxury of the luxury villas, would be quite happy in any of the properties. But we have been quite happy in the hotel with their oversized rooms done in nautical white themes and proximity to the pool and beach.
In a world where bigger is better, newer is better and flashier is better, Round Hill wins hands down by refusing to compete on these false stages and instead reminds us what true glamour and grace and elegance are and how lovely it is to find such things today.
Perhaps the "Party till you drop" crowd should bypass Round Hill. But for those who want to experience a timeless ambiance that has all but disappeared today, there are few if any places like Round Hill.
