“Nice, quiet, a little piece of Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

There are some nice surprises you can only find in Brazil, like making the check-in one day later, get no charge for the no-show and in addition be served with breakfast as if you were a guest from the prior day. It really matters to be nice to you, so that your guest experience starts with forgiveness and a gift. After this, if anything goes wrong like missing information or uninformed staff, you just can't complain but start understanding why things are different here. Being too demanding to these courteous but relaxed people is something culturally dissonant. And do not forget this is a hostel, not a 4 start hotel. Just relax and let it go. Enjoy the location and the people. Ilha Grande is for people intending to let it go easy. The hostel itself is located in a privileged location uphill, craved in the tropical forest, with gorgeous gardens, clean rooms, excellent wi-fi, good breakfast and nice staff - all of them.

Room Tip: All locations seem to be good

It has a lot of pros and some contras:
Lets start with the contras:

The main thing is the shared rooms, could get very humid. Specially after rain.

The pros are a lot:

- The breakfast is one of the best: its a 2 hours all-you-can-eat breakfast, with fruit, juices bread, cake and cookies, tea and coffe.
- The stuff made this hostel unforgetable: Part of the stuff is also owner of the hostel, so they do the best as they can to make you fell comfortable.
- Te comon area: The kitchen and the fridge are OK. For chill, theres a lot of hamaks and tables where you can share a drink or meal with other people, its easy to get to know other people in the hostel. Also, its not too noisie at night.

Room Tip: Its better to have a 4 or 6 people shared room. Reserve with time, if you get there with out reserv...

I really liked the location of the hostel - surrounded by rainforest and greenery, it's a very relaxing place. A bit of a walk from the main town but still close enough.

Rooms had good and bad points: I had a proper bed rather than a bunk, which was a nice surprise. Everything was nice and clean too. However, the 6 bed dorm had 4 beds upstairs and 2 downstairs. This could be good or bad - I was downstairs with just one strange man which I felt uncomfortable with as a solo female traveller. Also no key for the room so had to go to bed with front door unlocked - given the location I didn't feel 100% safe.

The lady who I think owns the place really didn't seem with it. First she couldn't find my reservation, then I didn't have a bed...stresses I could have done without. None of the staff were helpful with where to go next or what to do either, which surprised me given this is meant to be a HI hostel. I don't mind at all when people don't speak English, it is Brazil after all, but a bit of enthusiasm or a helpful attitude would have been good!

Hostel Holandes is the perfect place to relax and recharge after having spent a long day on the beach and in the sun. It is a little up the hill from Abrao, in a gardenlike environment in which little houses have the rooms in them. The rooms are very clean and well-kept, but without airco (with Fan though). They serve great cheap daily meals, and the common area becomes a pleasant drinking spot for guests in the evenings.

A little away from the town, this is a great place to stay. Staff are very helpful, rooms are big and has a good breakfast. Not a party hostel but great to chill out and visit Ilha Grande. Room rates are on par with other hostels also.

4 of us booked to stay in an 8 bed dorm. When we got there, it was a little bit of a walk from the main town (about 10mins) but well worth it. We were shown into a 6 person dorm, two beds downstairs and 4 upstairs. There wasn't anyone staying downstairs so it was almost like we had a private room! Bathrooms were clean and breakfast was good. The kitchen we could use was quite small which meant you might have to wait a while to cook and there was no wifi, just a very slow computer. Good value for money and very peaceful though :)

If your on the island, then stay in this place. Its cheap, comfortable, extremely clean and has a great atmosphere (suitable for young, old and families. On weeknights they cook their own food and its 15 Real per head - its great value.
