“Great dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We were a bit confused what to choose for our menu, there are so many mouth watering choices to choose from. Since we are from Indonesia, we wanted to try other country's special dishes. The food prepared by Philip was amazing and Wim showed us around the house after our dinner. We totally loved the experience, and will come back to visit The Sawah again in the future !

This review is not negative at all, but... it does NOT refer to our place. We are SOUTH of Yogya and this review mentions a place in the NORTH of the city. That restaurant is called SAWA, we are theSawah. Confusing, indeed, but we cannot change it.
Guests who come to our place should ask their taxi driver explicitely to go to theSawah in KASONGAN. Everyone knows that romantic pottery village.

“true to its credo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

The trip to The Sawah is not as bad as we thought it would, it was even a pleasant one. Arrival at the rustic house was greeted by both Wim and Phillip. Wim accompanied us while Phillip prepared the lunch. The lunch ( Indonesian set lunch ) was ready before we knew it. Had the most amazing Ayam Bakar a la Klaten ever! The succulent and savory meat just fell off the bones, the Sayur Lodeh had a full and rich flavor, none of which override the other. The rest of the meal compliments the whole thing. Portions are generous without being excessive

A truly exceptional dining experience. As my children put it..." We are certainly coming back for more"

Thank you Wim and Phillip for being such great hosts. Can't wait to sample your other offerings...

PS : Reservation is needed, since the restaurant only accomodate limited number of people per eating

“Home sweet home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012 via mobile

If you want to try Indonesian home cooking, The Sawah is the right place for you to go.. As their motto, not a restaurant but a place to eat.. That's exactly right.
I recommend their rijstafel (Dutch name for full table course, it's a very full table for sure), a very delicate soto ayam for starter (best soto ayam ever) and 10 beautiful courses (sate ayam, rendang, sayur lodeh, opor tahu tempe, tempe orek, tumis buncis, pecel, bakwan jagung, kering kentang) and nasi kuning as main course.
Be very hungry when you come to try this rijstafel, the portion is too generous if I may say.
Wim will take you to walk and see their beautiful house, this will give sometime before your dessert. Mine was frozen mango with lemon grass syrup, very delicious...
I cannot stop thinking about it... Very recommended

“Exotic Feast, Idyllic Setting, Warm Hospitality - Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

This place is stunningly gorgeous! Imagine having your dream foodie- dinner prepared by locals. Add in inspired architecture and interior design, fabulous art, a lush water garden, and sprinkle in the warmest hospitality available in Yogyakarta and you've got the idea. I can't say enough about the quality of the sambal, the fine herbal teas, and the exquisite variety of flavors we encountered during this unforgettable meal. Escape the hustle and bustle and plunge into an evening of spice and discover the meal you dreamed about when you planned your food journey to Indonesia!
