“Excellent, quiet, country hotel complex”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

Excellent, quiet, country hotel complex. We were at a wedding in the Japanese garden, which is one of few in UK. Fantastic day and very good wedding breakfast. Great overnight stay too, with good choice of breakfast.

We booked Fanhams back in 2012 for an event taking place March 2014. Having booked so far in advance we were a little concerned that things might not be as they were when we booked but the food tasting in Jan 2014 was excellent. Their Exec Chef Paul could not have been more helpful and the food really was excellent at the tasting and on the night. We held our function in the Pavilion Room, in the new part of the hotel over looking the pond and board walk. The room looked stunning thanks to our table decorator and the food on the night was very good indeed. We had over 100 guests and the canapés and drinks at the reception were very good indeed. Our guests comments on the beautiful location and the staff could not have been more helpful the run up to the event was not completely smooth as the team that we initially dealt with were not as helpful or informed as they should have been. However in the run up to the event we were helped by Amy who was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for her.
I would definitely recommend Fanhams for an event like a barmitzvah or wedding as the grounds, buildings and food are all excellent. The rooms if you are staying over night are somewhat small and cramped and we had a few problems with plumbing in our bathroom.

Tucked away in the Hertfordshire countryside Fanhams Hall is an idilic gem of a venue for weddings and parties (or if you really want to be boring, conferences). We attended the 50th birthday of a good friend and found the location and facilities ideal for a carefree evening with a large group of friends.

The BBQ buffet was excellent and the full english breakfast the following morning was very welcome after a hard night on the dance floor. The gardens are spacious and an ideal place to contemplate topics like moderation or total abstinence in future.

The accommodation was clean, comfortable and within easy walking distance from the festivities.

I would definitely recommend.

Yes, the gardens at Fanham Hall Hotel are breathtakingly beautiful and yes, the building itself is impressive. However, none of that means a jot, if you haven't got the right people running the show. Fanhams Hall Hotel in my view is one of the best run hotels I've had the pleasure of staying at. I booked a surprise birthday party for my partners 50th. It took months of planning, in which time I worked closely with the events team at the hotel. They were fantastic, always on hand to help and always professional in their dealings with me. On the night itself we were blessed to have such a fantastically spirited team helping make the night the success it was.
I cannot fault the hotel on any point, from the point of view of service. If I were pushed to criticise anything it would be the cost of bar drinks.... But for such a beautiful hotel and an idyllic environment, surrounded by people who can't do enough for you, what's a few extra pounds for a well earned G&T?

Stayed for business. Arrived quite late but was not a problem to serve us food beside the gorgeous fire place in the bar area. Food was lovely. Bar staff seemed to disappear quite a bit and service was slow.

My room was in the courtyard area and was nice. Probably a bit premier inn like in decoration but very comfy and warm. The only downside of the room was that I was on the ground floor next to the main door. This door slammed every time someone came into the building and disturbed my sleep. Also the room had patio doors leading out into the courtyard which I'm sure would be lovely in summer but on a cold winters January night it left me feeling a bit vulnerable as a lone female traveller.

I'm looking forward to staying here again in Summer when I return on business and hopefully get to enjoy the beautiful grounds.

We were really looking forward to a romantic getaway at Fanhams Hall - gorgeous rooms to dine in, lovely gardens to walk in.

Bitterly disappointed. We travel often and often stay at these type of establishments and have never felt like such second class citizens before. The rooms are very expensive for the area - so we thought we'd surely have excellent service, and a lovely relaxing stay in this gorgeous old building? We couldn't have been more wrong, sadly.

Our glasses were dirty two days in a row, our breakfast milk jug had tomato sauce in it, the fried egg white was raw on top. Literally raw.

We stayed for three days and there were 3 functions while we were there. A 4th was being set up as we were checking out. As a hotel guest you're ignored and shunted around to wherever a function is not happening at that point in time. Functions get the lovely old rooms we had hoped to use.

Our first night, we were stuck on our own (the only ignorant hotel guests to not go out for dinner we soon realised!) with loud music in the bar (the lovely hall was being used for a wedding) for a romantic dinner the first night - that didn't go down well. Service was slow and an after thought - too busy running around for wedding guests! The bar is clinical and reminds us of Chelsea and Westminster hospital. Staff were distant.

On our second night the bar and hall were BOTH used for two functions, we were told we'd be dining in the drawing room - that's set up for afternoon tea, knee high tables! We can't eat dinner crouched down!? We were upset. We ended up dining in our room and then only after the receptionist asking the chef if he could even accommodate this!? You're a hotel are you not?

We will never recommend this place for a relaxing weekend away. This hall is a function venue only, not catering for hotel guests. At all. Bitterly disappointed, as not only were we needing a relaxing weekend getaway, but because the rooms are really expensive too! We were just relegated to the areas not used by a function at that particular point in time.

Staff need training in how to deal with hotel guests. Of all the staff we dealt with over three days only three actually came across as friendly and hospitable.. Two at reception and one in the breakfast area. The others were disinterested and weren't at all bothered that they had guests they actually couldn't accommodate properly. We were too polite, perhaps if we had kicked up a stink we would have been taken notice of or at least offered a discount? But that's not the way we are.

The hall needs to be called Fanhams Hall Functions, not Fanhams Hall Hotel. Because it doesn't cater for hotel guests. Only functions.

We stayed here for a treat and felt compelled to write a review. The hotel is simply stunning, the acres of grounds a real delight and beautifully maintained. The staff are all friendly, a particular mention to Jennifer who was an asset to the hotel and really made our stay knowing staff genuinely care about your experience. The rooms were clean and housekeeping staff pleasant upon passing. The service in the bar was slightly lacking but the food was amazing. Breakfast was also very good with a range of choice. I would definitely stay here again.
