Despite reading some negative comments on Tripadvisor, we decided to book a night at this hotel on the way back from our honeymoon, as it was close to Stansted.
We got a room in the modern extension, which is quite an ugly part of the hotel; not at all like the main building which is simply stunning. The room was comparable to a £20 a night Travelodge accommodation, except nowhere near as clean. The refurbished bathroom had a huge walk-in shower which was very good, however, the dark blue tiles were quite unattractive and depressing. The floor did not feel very clean and the area behind the sink was disgustingly dirty.
We arrived just before 10pm, to the sound of a Greek wedding in full swing. We did not mind it as we were warned this was a very popular wedding venue. After dropping our bags off, we decided to look for a bar in the main part of the hotel. Anything to get out of that depressing room. The receptionist seemed surprised to see us, so we told her we were just going to explore the hotel. To which she replied, 'What do you mean by that?' When we told her we wanted a drink, she escorted us to the bar, pointing out the rooms we were not allowed to use as they were booked for the wedding. We told her that the whole reason we booked the hotel was to see the historic part, so she reluctantly agreed for us to see the beautiful candle lit library. 'As long as you are quick,' she said, despite the fact that the room was completely empty. We have never stayed at a hotel where we were made to feel like complete intruders. It was almost funny. Also, she cold not tell us where the breakfast would be served, as the conservatory was being renovated. Luckily for us it was in the main hall, which is magnificent. The breakfast was quite good. The staff were professional and friendly.
In the morning, we had a lovely walk in the grounds which are stunning. We also managed to see the old part of this beautiful building. We would only go back if we were guaranteed a room in the main building, not on a wedding night.
