“Great option for seeing lots of stuff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

We stayed here for a couple of nights as part of a longer trip in Borneo.
1) A great welcome - liked the touch of a "compulsory" sarong - liked it so much in fact that I bought it and brought it home!
2) Good food - buffet presentation but good quality and some lovely fish. In fact, all the food seemed appropriate to the region. It was a relief not to see chicken nuggest or chips just to please the Westerners. It was fairly quiet when we were there, so no great scrum for the food.
3) Rooms are basic but clean. You get a bed but not much else! Seem to be mosi-proof though.
4) Fabulous animal watching - We saw pigmy elephant, proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards, orangutan, sea eagle, hornbills, longtailed macaques and loads of other animals. All this from the comfort of a boat. We hadn't paid extra for a private guide but the lodge was so quiet, we were usually the only ones on the boat!
Highly recommend it and would also recommend considering combining this with a stay at their sister lodge in Abai.

We had 1 night here on our transfer from the river lodge we were lucky enough to see a 2 year old female elephant which as excellent. The lodge is lovely, clean welcoming and even had a bit of fun dressing the tourists up in the evening for dinner in sarongs. However we had a massive storm which meant we were unable to go on our afternoon boat ride. The drive back out was a shock as you are right in the palm plantations a reminder of the plight of the wildlife in this area.

Adequate accommodation and food (buffet) in a great location for wildlife viewing, especially from boats.

After three nights in the Danum Valley and one in Abai we were looking forward to another night in our Borneo excursion of wildlife spotting. The resort was so far below the quality of its peers not in terms of rooms or staff which were similar but in overall setting. Sukau is completely overdeveloped. The property can is in a city that happens to be on the river. It is not meaningfully in the jungle. When you go on the boat safaris from the property you will be in a line of dozens of boats from multiple properties going along the same narrow river to see the same set of macaque monkeys. Any other monkey or wildlife would be terrified by the string of loud motorboats and steer well clear of you. I guess if your comparison set is a zoo or a game reserve (i.e., stocked animals) this qualifies as nature but if you've been in a primary forest or enjoy seeing wildlife with at least the illusion that you are an interloper and intruder rather than one of a thousand people parading buy avoid this property and location at all costs.

Booked with S.I tours via Kuoni as part of a 3 day tour. Motor boat to the lodge along the river with sighting of wild Orangutans, check in to the lovely lodge, down the river before a great buffet dinner; sighting of loads of animals with fantastically enthusiastic guides (Georg in particular). Just the most fantastic part of our honeymoon, with some lovely people we met on the trip with us as well.

This lodge is about 40 units on elevated walkways in a nicely maintained riverside property. The central dining and lounge area is open and spacious, and the beers are nicely chilled. Rooms, like other rainforest lodges, are not air-conditioned and are cooled by ceiling fans and breezes. Rooms are in 2 to 4 unit chalets along meandering walkways. Entirely adequate and clean. Food at meals was nicely prepared and typical for the location. Sarongs are provided for those who wish to lounge in appropriate regional attire. There are expansive wood decks and observation tower along the river; proboscis monkeys were observed across the river. From the lodge deck long boats take you out on night cruises, and on excursions to inlets, \along the river, and into Oxbow Lake. It was from this lodge that our tour encountered a herd or 40 or so pygmy elephants foraging and crossing a stream.

Room Tip: Some chalets are closer to the river than others

Nice place for overnight at the river Kinabatangan which is the best place to observe wildlife of Sukau (especially proboscis monkeys but also birds, elephants, and others). Very clean rooms located in the wooden little houses, connected with foodbridges. Sometimes you may see a special "guest" like a little lizzard on the ceiling:-) Many viewpoints and benches to seat and admire the nature. Food, especially for breakfast, rather boring...
