“Amazing wildlife”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2006

The number and variety of wildlife we saw in two days at this place was amazing - 6 orangutans in just one day alone!!! It actually felt a little like a zoo as the animals were so numerous and accessible! Expect to see a huge number of different sorts of monkeys and birds all hanging out on the riverbank as you glide by in a small boat. We were lucky to see 10 orangutans in total, civet cat during the day, basking snake....fantastic experience. Guide was an excellent spotter, but not so knowledgable about the animals (he knew the name but not so much about their behaviour etc). Lodge is founded on very sound eco-pinciples, but personally I feel they use this to rest on their laurels a little ie as an excuse not to clean the bathrooms for example (a lot of visitors seem to think that this is part of the experience!) Compared to Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley, Sukau Rainforest Lodge is pretty basic with tiny rooms, dirty bathrooms and not very good food - but the animal experience is unique and makes up for it all! It seemed to be the most profesionally run outfit of the handful of similar lodges in the area.

Stayed at this lodge for two brilliant nights. Surrounded by amazing wildlife noises. We saw wild orang utans, proboscis monkeys, other various species of monkeys, otters and an abundance of wonderful and colourful birds of all sizes. We were also treated to a rare sighting of the malaysian sun bear! Did not see the pygmy elephants but found lots of their footsteps very close to the lodge. The walk around the broadwalk by the lodge given by Winston, about the use of plants in the jungle as medications, food and poisons were just facinating. Our guide, Mark was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I liked the eco-concept of this lodge. The rooms are comfortable but fairly basic. Food was good and liked the fact that we dressed up in complimentary sarongs for dinner. All the staff are friendly and helpful. The night cruise to see the wildlife, espcially birds were excellent. We saw so many species of kingfishes and broadbills.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Loved the eco-friendly concept and most incredible experience going to sleep surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest - even better to wake up to the sound of the wild gibbons! Enjoyed our morning walk around the hornbill boardwalk which circles around the hotel - wild elephants can sometimes be seen crossing its path but we were unlucky this time!
However, we were treated to the sight of two wild male orang-utans sighted down river and had the opportunity to get really close to them - incredible experience and one we will never forget!!

Do try this place, if you love wildlife you wont regret it.
