“Luxurious Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

We stayed at the Kempinski for one night on Gozo during a 2 week holiday based in Malta. The greeting at reception was welcoming and made you feel special. The receptionist showed us around the hotel and spa and then escorted us to our room.
The superior room was spacious, very clean and had an elegant feel, complete with plenty of facilities. The turn down service in the evening was an unexpected bonus.
The grounds include a garden and three pools - all immaculate. The pool bar provides complimentary towels for guest use.
We dined at the hotel's L'Ortolan restaurant. Again the greeting was exceptional and the staff were attentive and keen to serve any requirement. The food was excellent - and the portions were plentiful. We dined outside on the terrace which was delightful as dusk fell. The wine list had a broad choice to meet different tastes and pockets!
In the morning, breakfast in the same restaurant was brilliant with a fantastic array of choice from the buffet.
Overall the experience was just what we hoped for - a one night touch of luxury on Gozo during our normal 2 weeks holiday on Malta.
NOTE: we hired a car from our hotel in Malta and took the ferry over to Gozo. We found having the car on Gozo very useful.

The service, the staff, the location, the food and even the cocktails were great. If you are planning a relaxing holiday then Kempinski Gozo is the place to go. The staff were so helpful they organised things you wanted. The bedroom was the biggest I had ever slept in. The overall experience was just what I had expected from a 5* hotel. We can not wait to return there next Summer

Room Tip: We had a superior room and that was very good. I understand they have 2 more higher types of accommo...

Stayed here for 3 nights with my husband at the beginning of May. This was the best part of our stay in Malta & Gozo. Arrived here from St Julians - by bus to the ferry and then taxi from the ferry port. Didn't have any problems with the bus transfers as they are reliable and cheap. Also got the bus on the way back from the ferry port straight to the airport in less than an hour for less than 5 euros!

The hotel itself is beautiful and we much enjoyed the spa, the pool facilities as well as our room! The staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfasts were a treat and we loved the fruit selection especially the water melon and fresh pineapple as well as the cafe lattes. The afternoon tea was also a nice treat and for 12 euro there is enough to share between two (depending on your appetite of course).

All in all we had a wonderful stay and just wished that we could have stayed a bit longer but definitely plan to come back again one day. Also it's worth doing a day trip to the Blue Lagoon in Comino from here. Just take a bus to Victoria and from there another one to the port from where speedboats go regularly.

If you are looking for a safe environment with excellent facilities, then this resort hotel may be for you. However, its location is rather uninspiring (no view to speak of, a bus ride to the coast) and there is very little nearby beyond a small supermarket and 2 village restaurants. This hotel definitely will not be for you if you are looking for any form of nightlife! That was reflected in the fact that the guests included a lot of families with very small children (there's a children's club) and older couples - although all ages were welcomed. I'd say it was less suitable for a romantic break due to the family-friendly ambience.
The rooms are large and the housekeeping service was excellent. It is worth getting a pool-facing view. Main services are on the 5th floor - I'd recommend asking for a room on that floor. One small niggle - no proper hairdryer, just the bathroom wall type. Impossible for anyone with longer hair or for styling. Also the bed was truly uncomfortably hard. I do expect more in a hotel of this rating.
There are three pools, including a children's pool, an attractive shaped pool suitable for all with water features and bridges and the main pool which is designated for adults only. Unfortunately a few guests were unaware of or chose to ignore the adults only rule at the main pool and this was not enforced by staff.
The spa is excellent and features a lovely indoor pool heated to 32c. I had an Ayurvedic facial treatment which was unusual and very relaxing.
While the breakfast buffet is truly outstanding, sadly our experience of the evening food was not so positive - we found it bland and over-priced. Luckily there are 2 small restaurants each about 7 or 8 minutes walk from the hotel which are good (Jeffery's on the main road in Gharb and Tatitas in the square in San Lawrenz). You will become acutely aware of the lack of choice if you stay more than a few nights.
The staff were all individually very helpful and charming (among the best anywhere) although on occasion there was a discernible lack of senior management and organisation. The hotel would benefit from the presence of a manager in a host role - greeting and building rapport with guests.
Gozo is small and easy to get around by public bus. The hotel also provides a useful shuttle bus service twice a day to all key points on the island. We particularly recommend Ramla beach which is beautiful and minimally developed.
Gozo itself is not possessed of many obvious attractions. It doesn't have particularly dramatic scenery or many buildings of historic interest or sophisticated nightlife. It does, however, have a quiet charm which starts to grow on you the longer you stay. It feels very safe and gentle and genuine - miles away from the bland corporate sameness that fills so many places. The locals are wonderful hosts and justly proud of their island. And the sea here is wonderful. Of course, you can twin with a stay on Malta if you are looking for something more developed (and Malta is very developed!).
It's easy to get to the hotel. They will organise a taxi for you on request (50 euros each way in 2012 not including ferry fare). It takes about 50 minutes from the airport in Malta to reach the ferry, 25 minute crossing time on the ferry and a further 30 minutes to get to the hotel once on Gozo. You can achieve the same with public buses if you prefer - there is a bus stop about 50 metres walk from the hotel.
Overall this hotel has all you need to sit back and relax but somehow lacks a certain something - a resort of this nature needs an injection of personality which this one didn't have.

Room Tip: Go for a pool view room on the fifth floor.

The hotel was great and the services and the staff were without exceptional top class. They could not do enough for us and we were really impressed with them. The standard of the room (we had a Premier Room) was great and the bed was so big, there was room for 4! (there were just the 2 of us of course). The facilities - spa, gym and the pools were first class and the treatments I had were very relaxing. The breakfast buffet was like nothing else we had, the range and variety outstanding, and we really enjoyed it every morning, especially sitting out on the terrace.

The one downfall was the food served. It was a very poor quality. I had a Chicken Caesar salad from the pool cafe. The chicken was 4 tiny skewers of fatty dark brown looked like sauteed chicken. There were 4 halves of tomatoes and enough sauce to last 1 week. It was yukky. There was a total cock up in the Trattoria the night we ate there. Three main ingredients missing from my salad !, main course being brought out before we finished our starter, stale bread, swordfish for €25k the size of a fist. We were really surprised and felt that it really really let the hotel down. There is a great restaurant near the hotel so we went there and also drove to other restaurants.

We loved the hotel, the sun, the staff and the breakfast buffet, but we do not recommend eating any lunch or dinner there. Have a great time if you go. We will be back.

Room Tip: Rooms on the left as you come from reception get the sun on the balcony in the afternoon.

Stayed 9 nights and were blown away by the excellence of the hotel and the staff on all levels. Great views from our balcony, breakfast is world class and so are the 3 restaurants and wine bar. Would not stay anywhere else in Gozo and would highly recommend to anyone.

The Gozo Kempinski is truly stunning. It's a decadent 5 star extravaganza of grand architecture, beautifully manicured grounds (the rustle of wind through the palm trees round the pool was totally relaxing), amazing facilities (kids club, tennis courts, spa and 4 swimming pools couldn't be faulted), friendly staff and sumptuous rooms.
The food from the three restaurants was top notch and I'm very pleased we opted for half board. This covered breakfast and dinner in your choice of restaurant and a full choice from the a la carte menu rather than any dodgy buffet. Given that starters and deserts were 10-16 euro and mains were upto 26euro this was well worth it. they did get a bit busy but if you were in the restaurants at 7 it worked well.
As a family with young kids it worked perfectly - the free kids club was run by an excellent experienced nanny and our two were asking us to go in for morning and afternoon sessions every day. Pool, kids club, food, pool, kids club, food was the daily routine that gave mum and dad loads of time to relax and make use of the other facilities.
It was a very memorable holiday that I hope we can repeat again next year.
