I can simply not comprehend the reviews people give this hotel. If you are looking for a cosmopolitan 4* standard (or a somewhat luxurious or romantic place), this is not for you. This is an 3* hotel in need of maintenance of their bathrooms and ventilation system.
I'll continue with the NEGATIVES. Keep reading if you want the POSITIVES.
The place has a feel to it of having new additions (it is a labyrinth off corridors and staircases), but that they're not maintaining what is already there. If the room is run down, what matter does it make that they get a spa and the lobby looks good?
I found a decent deal on the web ("Promo Room" including breakfast), but little did I know "Promo room" was their (possibly) worst, smallest, claustrophobic room, without windows and a double bed. The first thing that hit me was the smell. Around the hotel, and especially in the room, they try to hide the trapped, humid smell. The hotel has poor ventilation. I spent approximately 1 minute in the room - I simply had to upgrade to something better. When I specifically asked about a double bed, the reply was that THIS HOTEL HAS NO DOUBLE BEDS! We did however get a far better room, but also this room was perfumed to hide the smell. The bathroom was clearly water damaged by the humidity of showering, etc. It had fungus, water damage, rust and a "charming" cockroach. The water from the shower went on the floor, and stayed there. Yes, they clean the room and bathroom (of course), but it is so worn that soap is not what's needed there.
• The doors are very thin.
• If you don't hang up the Don't Disturb sign, you'll be awakened by the house keeper around 8 or 9.
• They changed towels that were not on floor. Practice what you preach!
• They didn't refill the soap.
• The pool closes at 8 PM/20:00. It is small, shallow, has kids and youngsters playing in it. Food/drinks service until 3 PM/15:00 only.
• Great service, great staff, professional, courteous, friendly.
• Wi-fi (Two options: Slow is free, proper 10MB costs).
• Kitchenette (in the upgraded room).
• Balcony (in the upgraded room).
• 24 hour room service with a very good selection of food and drinks.
• The short vicinity of Maltas best restaurants.
• A nice 20 min walk to Maltas best beach (Mellieha Bay).
• Roof-top pool and view.
• Spa (although not cosmopolitan standard).
• Bar, ice cream and restaurant.
Make sure to get a a window in the room, or treat yourself to a balcony with a view of the church an...

We are very much concerned in hearing that the Solana Hotel & Spa has on this occasion fallen short of your expectations.
We in fact remain very much perplexed at learning that your accommodation experience was a negative one, especially when our records indicate that when our Guest Relations Team sought feedback on your well being, this was in the affirmative. This situation is unfortunately now in the past and cannot be taken back, however, please rest assured that we have still taken all the necessary measures to investigate the various maintenance related aspects mentioned in your review.
Where the room type is concerned, your booking has indeed reached us for a Promo Room which as clearly described on our website, refers to an Internal Non-Balcony Room, occasionally also referred to as an Economy Room. Nonetheless, such a unit features the exact amenities located in a typical standard room with the exception of having an internal facing window, rather than a balcony.
Considering that during your stay with us, there were also several positive aspects, we are very much hoping that should you consider visiting Malta again in the future, you will not hesitate in allowing the Solana Hotel & Spa a second opportunity where to fully win your trust. In this case, please do not hesitate to contact myself personally in advance of your stay so that together we choose the unit type that mostly appeals to you, while also ensuring your entire stay is as pleasant as possible.
