“"Fly-ing" Visit”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014 via mobile

Myself and Mrs Doc decided to stay here on a whim as we travelled home to Malta from a very successful and pleasant stay on Gozo in the Kempinski and Maria Giovanna Guest house; both of which were vastly superior to what we experienced here. We chose the Maritim only because there was a penthouse suite with jacuzzi available and we thought this would be a nice end to our trip. For a spa room, we would usually choose the excellent Fortina Spa in Sliema, and could easily have done so for just a few € more. However the Maritim was on our route home and it was this that influenced our decision to stay.

We arrived early and checked in and were told that the room would not be ready until 1400. This was no issue and we took ourselves off for some lunch at a nearby restaurant. We returned some two hours later after 1500, collected our key and made our way up to our room. Rather frustratingly, our key card did not work necessitating a return to reception for a replacement. On entering the suite we were a little disappointed to find that both bedrooms where furnished with single beds; despite them being pushed together, they were all made up with single bedding. This was just a minor point but for a penthouse suite the finishing touches, charm and elegance are all lacking and not at all like the pictures on the hotel's own website showing fruit baskets, wine, bathrobes etc. The terrace area was not laid out, the parasol was laid out on the floor and was grubby and damaged. Potential guests should note that the jacuzzi and terrace are not secluded and are overlooked both from above and from neighbouring buildings.

The USP for this room is presumably the lauded 'jacuzzi/heated whirlpool' unfortunately we found this to be in a very poor state of repair and dubious maintenance. The filter was exposed, and judging by the copious dead flies in evidence not functioning. The water was cold, some of the jets were damaged and the temperature gauge unreadable/melted. There is a tatty, homemade notice attached to the tub informing guests that the pool is not to be used on anything more than the lowest setting. We requested a call from Maintenance who informed us that he had turned the pool on early that day to allow adequate time for heating but, 'Someone must have switched it off again'. He offered to inconvenience us further by draining the pool and refilling it with warm water only after attempting to persuade us that the stone cold, fly infested water was 'fine'. The solution to the fly issue was addressed by the arrival of one of the housekeeping staff carrying a can of insecticide spray!

As this was rapidly descending into the realms of farce we chose to check out and return to our home in nearby Mgarr. However, obtaining a simple refund required entering into a battle of wills with the receptionist who initially informed us that a refund would not be possible. On asking to speak to a representative from management we were told this was also impossible as they were all in a 'meeting'; judging from other negative reviews here, this appears to be the standard hotel reply to requests to speak with a manager. After much insistence a rather surly gentleman appeared, listened nonchalantly to our complaints, before waving his hand in the air and instructing the receptionist to 'Give them their money back'. At no time did we receive an apology nor was it possible to have our refund paid back onto our credit card; this was paid back in cash.

This whole sorry scenario was accompanied by much eye-rolling and under breath muttering in Maltese. Mrs Doc requested more than once that English be spoken when discussing our complaint with colleagues. We left disappointed, deflated and with a rather sour taste in our mouths. Having adopted Malta as our home we have learned that some establishments will always cater for tourists with low expectations of standards and customer service. This hotel displayed this 'bloody tourists' attitude to a tee. We are resident in Malta and really should not have to explain this in order to obtain a reasonable standard to service.

We chose this hotel because of its location (close to home) and competitive price. Room on the main building oozed tranquility. Room was impeccably clean, staff was corteous and always ready to help with a smile. The spa was also surprising: its facilities are easily compable to the higher rated 5-star hotels.

Thank you all for a lovely stay; will surely call again.

Needing some time away from home but being on a tight budget, I booked a short break for my family and me at this hotel with none-too-high expectations. Maritim turned out to be a pleasant surprise. My husband, daughter and myself were given Room 314 in the annexe past the (in)famous tunnel. True, the tunnel did smell a bit of mold but I wasn't going to sleep in it so ... The room was actually a suite with a bathroom and a shower room, a sitting area (which was converted into a second sleeping area to accommodate my daughter) and a good-sized bedroom. The terrace was lovely and offered a nice view of the sea and town.

The staff at reception and at the restaurant were extremely courteous and cannot be faulted. The complimentary bottle of wine and fresh fruit upon arrival were also very welcome. Buffet breakfast was abundant and varied. Buffet dinner was good but I enjoyed breakfast more, somehow.

The indoor swimming pool is small and could have done with a changing area seeing how bathrobes need to be hired from reception against a nominal fee. So, if you're planning a Winter break, make sure you take flip flops and a cover up with you.

Some inside info for non-locals. There are 2 pharmacies right opposite the hotel, grocery, at least 2 cafeterias, and many great restaurants very near the hotel. Mellieha is not near the capital city Valletta or the popular nightlife hub Paceville, but it is close to the nicer beaches and the ferry to Gozo. Consider this when planning your holiday in Mellieha.

In conclusion, I believe that Maritim Antonin Hotel and Spa is a very good hotel and well worth the price paid.

Fantastic hotel with great staff wonderful room and very good buffet. Swimming pool area marvellous. Very good location. A little walk to Mellieha bay for walking on the sand and take some coffee. There is also busses Near by to go to Valletta or also you can take one for cirkewwa to get a ship to Gozo.

Room Tip: 5th floor room 536. Great balcony with street view and church view.

This is an attractive, well-run hotel. It was my second stay and I was upgraded to a superb double room in the building opposite Reception which was accessed by the road or a tunnel. Unfortunately, the room was very cold and I caught a chill. Also I was rather shocked at the dust balls and the state of my new slippers at the end of the week. The maid appeared the day before we left, loitered, took a personal phone call, then said it was her day off the next day (strange how many times I hear this ...). The weather was partly to blame, I would not recommend visiting Malta end of November, but, if you do, take warm clothes and don't be fooled by the temperatures, ie for 21C read 14C! We were lucky the day we visited Gozo, a trip I thoroughly recommend. I enjoyed the breakfasts, the dinners were good if rather bland. Entertainment was of the one-man variety and excellent on the first night when the bar was full. However, the chilly bar (not helped by the automatic glass doors constantly swishing open) and rather mouthy bartender did not encourage patronage to this extent the rest of the week. After this holiday, I decided, once and for all, no more cheap holidays out of season!!

My partner and I wanted to chill out over the Christmas period and the Maritim is just about designed for it. Our room was spotless, with a hot tub on the balcony and a queen sized bed.
The staff were invariably friendly and helpful - perhaps one or two struggled with English but so what?
We went half board and the food was buffet style - of a standard that pleasantly surprised me. They really made an effort to provide something a bit special for the Christmas period.
A couple of very minor suggestions: The signs for the tunnel - make them brass, as the tunnel is not going away and printed signs just looked a bit amateurish. The lift system confused a lot of guests - a pictorial sign would be helpful.

Room Tip: There are a couple of rooms with a hot tub on the balcony - ask for one of them.
